Ozb Redirected Me to Weird mmrtb.com Website

Hi everyone,

So I had both OzBargain and CamelCamelCamel opened and for some reason, I got automatically redirected to this mmrtb.com website which looked like it was from iiNet. My memory was a bit fuzzy but I think OzBargain was opened before it redirected me to that website. I don't have a screenshot but it is very similar to this

I have also turned off the ability for website to redirect on my browser was well.

Does anyone know what happened?

  • Update from Publift:

Apologies for the delay in actioning this request but we've gone ahead and blocked mmrtb.com.

    8/1:

Fortunately we've been able to identify the source of the redirecting ads so we've temporarily disabled the network for now. We'll continue to monitor the thread as well and work with the network to ensure this does not come through again.

    • Any info on what mmrtb is and whether it poses any threat to our devices or whether we need to do anything??

Or is mmrtb just a phishing site?

  • +3

You probably have a virus on your device.

Surely no site could be dodgier than iinets own site? Are they not a virus? Just remember ALL the customers data,ID financial etc is shared offshore via totally unknown ppl (strangers). You literally pay for it, as an iinet TPG victim customer.
I'd like to know how many iinet customers don't get bombarded with landline/mobile/email spam.
I mean there couldn't possibly be a connection between the offshore support and dubious outcomes, could there?

  • We've had another report with the same issue. This has been reported to Publift who manage our display ads.

    • Not too sure how dodgy it is with me visiting that website but i’m happy to share the link through TWAM if you need it.

  • This just happened to me - redirected from an ozbargain page (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/882692).
On to a MMTRB com website, which appeared to be mimicking a Telstra page indicating I've won some sort of prize.
The phishing web address contains ozbargain references, so there's definitely a link there.
Reported this through 'Contact us' page, and provided the link.

  • me too - auto redirect to below just an hour or so ago (aldi and google mimic promoting a fake competition) - I was just on the root page of ozb

    • Would like to know what steps to take so phone or pc not compromised?

  • From Publift:

Thank you for bringing the redirect to our attention. We acknowledge the issue and will be monitoring the site to ensure no further redirections to phishing sites occur.

We will also process the requested blocking measures and notify you as soon as the request has been completed.

    • 🤡🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡

  • Came to report the same thing, was on front page /deals at ~20:20 SYD time and was redirected to mortgage and it looked like a Google page with a competition.

Am on an iPad so doubtful it’s a virus/malware. Was not logged into OzBargain at the time.

    • Is apple immune to virus/ malware compared to non apple?

  • Same thing just happened to me while reading on a science journal website (Nature) - second time this week.

    • Wow its even happening with something as prestigious as Nature?

      • +1

I just sent an email to the Nature data protection email. Hope that works! Some person / group is having a field day with these ad redirects. (Total aside - that is an awesome chicken profile picture.)

  • Is anyone running uBlock origin? Thinking of adding it to see if it keeps these redirects from happening.

  • Come on guys, this isn't acceptable (even for a free service)

    • This was resolved 4 days ago. Were you just served the ad?

      • I’ve had it twice today

        • Can you confirm what the URL was?

  • Got this a few times and only in ozbargain via Chrome. Either ozbargain pages or links out via ozbargain

    • Can you confirm what the URL was?

  • Definitely just happened here too. Still via the mmrtb URL. Mac OS via Safari.

    • @neil

    • Have contacted Publift again. We have reports that these ads are showing on other sites as well so hopefully other sites are reporting them to the ad networks.

    • OK, latest update:

Fortunately we've been able to identify the source of the redirecting ads so we've temporarily disabled the network for now. We'll continue to monitor the thread as well and work with the network to ensure this does not come through again.

  • Just had this myself, was redirected to securevault[.]top

  • this just happened to me too!

    • Was it the mmrtb.com URL?

  • Just happened to me, but had also happened to me from another random research/education site earlier today.

The URL for mine was (minus the space after https): https:// mmrtb.com/bonus/com-au-8834/global-bb.php?c=52z7p8oqz6lz0&k=6223e8118f7ab7611ab6eb386ed12866&country_code=AU&carrier=Vodafone&country_name=Australia&region=New%20South%20Wales&city=Sydney&isp=Vodafone%20Australia%20Pty%20Ltd&lang=en&ref_domain=&os=Mac%20OS%20X&osv=10.15&browser=Safari&browserv=&brand=Desktop&model=Desktop&marketing_name=Desktop&tablet=4&rheight=768&rwidth=768&t1=e4954fd0ce91f009&t2=ozbargain.com.au&t3=usfo-kiapid-cpm-rtb-bn&t4=101.115.175.18&t5=safari&t6=macos&t7=&t8=AU&t9=1i7c3a6v3n1s7u6o5s1e7l2x1&t10=002737&t11=ozbargain.com.au_7a5cdf95479b1c8e42ca4160ffefff45&t12=fe667f3ef84aa76a886f0dff099672c2&t13=4%7C%7Cozbargain.com.au%7C%7Cozbargain.com.au%7C%7Cozbargain.com.au%7C%7Cozbargain.com.au&t14=pop&t15=&et1=&et2=0x0&et3=&et4=&et5=&e=5

  • From what we have gathered so far:

    • Our ad provider (Publift) is working on narrowing down the rogue ads. They have blocked some networks over the last couple of days but the issue persists.

    • Rogue ads that redirects page to mmrtb.com and securevault.top + popup might have been on multiple ad network, and it's affecting many websites, not just OzBargain.

Unfortunately there isn't much that we can do. What you can do to mitigate the problem — either turn off ads in your user settings, or run an ad blocker on your browser. Not the solution that we prefer, but they should work for now.
