Are OzBargainers Blatantly Ripping off Other OzBargainers with YouTube and Other Family Subs

So recently I noticed more and more OzBargain resellers are just blatantly ripping other OzBargainers with their bull(profanity) shit family sharing prices

For example: YouTube family subs asking $40-$45 a year shared between 6 people!

That equates to $240-$270 these sellers are pocketing ($140-$170 profit) for an account which costs them under $100 to make https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879559?page=3#comment

I'm all for a slight service fee for the reseller/acc holder but $140-$170+ profit on a single account is pure SCUMMY anti OzBrgain behaviour!

I've made many family groups in the past and I charge an extra $0-$3 max as a service fee

A lot of people that join these groups don't know how much these guys are ripping them off by (so they just join anyway)
I think @scotty and OzBargain admins should crack down on these rip-off subs.

  • I used to pay $10 a year to one member here to get youtube without ads.
Then I learnt my lesson, and now I paid none to get the same…

      Extensions?

      • +10

        Yeah, uBlock Origin is amazing.

    • what lesson did you learn? Can you really get adblocks working on ios and on tvs?

      • Yep I'm yet to see any way to block ads on apple tv devices without paying for YouTube Premium.

  • Aren’t some of the shares AU?

    • Yes, I'm specifically taking about the cheap os accounts being sold for 3x the cost price to the seller

  • +3

The one thing I don't understand is what's to stop these people from just removing you from their 'Family' Plan down the track (after receiving payment) and resell it to the next person using a different OZB username?

I personally wouldn't buy a YT Premium "Spot" from the forums or anywhere else for that matter!

    • +12

      Bikies

    • I've never had an issue over the decades here on ozbargain, normally check the users history first

Market sets the prices, nobody is forcing you to join the family account of another user.

It's not just a "service fee", it also needs to cover the risks which the account owner is taking onboard, e.g. members may choose not to pay, and the risk of being banned for sharing falls almost squarely on the owner.

    • +2

members may choose not to pay,

Didn’t neg you but members can easily be booted out of the plan?

    • +1

Not true, the risk is almost always shared because people normally pay a yr upfront, so everyone loses out if acc gets banned.
Very few sellers will take the hit and refund you

    • +4

GTFO of here dude, I was one of the founding members of this site 18+ yrs ago!

The site was purely community driven, the entire concept was based around helping the community find good deals and you got nothing from besides the gratitude from others!

I would like to think this still exists to this very day!

      • +1

The community has clearly changed, when you can now tell people to GTFO.

        • The reality of all Communites is that of streching, growing, sometimes reforming, sometimes changing.
But that is really up to the Moderators.
I also think that people do need to read the warnings that are clearly posted about OzBargain not being responsible for any purchase you make though the Classified section: Classifieds is strictly for personal use between members only, and members do so at their own risk. OzBargain does not offer buyer protection or facilitate payments, and will take no responsibility for any transactions or disputes that occur. Please see Classified Posting Guidelines for further information.

  • I can answer this. It depends on the region of the plan. I'm looking for AU region plans specifically, which would be ~60 AUD per year.

    • Obviously i don't have an issue with people charging $60 if it costs $360 au a yr for 6 spots

  • +2

lol… you must be new here… The classified section here is the Wild West. If I can’t feel it, see it, touch it, taste it, smell it, whatever it, I’m not giving you money over the internet for it.

If you think others are ripping people off, you are welcome to start your own “sub” group and undercut the other group offerers in this market.

18yr old acc, around top 100ish oldest active acc here according to scotty, looks like i will have to start my own, i already have several subs to manage which is why i was reluctant to start my own

  • +6

I think @scotty and OzBargain admins should crack down on these rip-off subs.

It's purely a transaction between a willing buyer and a willing seller. Why should OzBargain try to interfere?

  • +2

Why are you not just starting your own…?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/885250

Clearly you’re not willing to put in the effort or carry the risks, but expect someone else to do it for free?

YouTube constantly increase their prices. People are charging more to cover that, along with other reasons mentioned above.

I'm not talking about the subs that are fairly priced, I'm specifically talking about the os subs that are profiting 300% from each user

Full disclosure, I’m one of the scummy people you’re referring to. Sold seats in my Turkish YT family for $40ea.

By my calculations, they actually cost about $22ea. I guess I’m getting ripped off and India would have been better.

The key risk is that YouTube has had two price increases in almost a year. The people in the family pay me yearly, but I pay YouTube monthly. Say they have another 50% increase tomorrow. that means each seat now costs $33. Now imagine the Turkish Lira gets stronger, now all of a sudden I’m paying more again, as I’m buying gift cards on the fly to keep the account in a positive balance. I don’t want to load up the account, because if it gets cancelled… what am I going to do with a bunch of Turkish Lira in an Apple account?

So if you think $40 is unfair what’s your proposal? Charge rock bottom prices then ask people for more money half way through if things change? I don’t want to do that. Easier to agree on a price now, and I don’t talk to them for a year. Or you can charge them monthly at however much it actually costs plus x%. Now you’re reconciling and chasing up 5x monthly payments.

I hope you can see that $40 is not that ridiculous.

        • If any of my family members see this and are disgusted at how much I’m ripping them off, PM for refund please.

Also I’m not downvoting you. Don’t assume it’s me lol.

Classifieds. Someone names a price, someone accepts it. Or negotiates it. It's not like there isn't information on this exact website that instructs how to do it yourself. There's no scam nor a ripoff. What happens between consenting adults is fine by me.

  • +3

I understand the frustration at people using this site to profit off other users when its not what the community was intended to be about.

But at the end of the day, people are still getting a deal out of the transaction and its a free market.

People charging on top for these services are not really any different than a seller posting a discount on their own items imo.

  • +1

Maybe they giving some of their accounts free to family (like their pensioner parents) and need to charge more to people who aren't family to cover costs? You don't have to pay it. Go and pay full price if you're that butthurt about it.

For context: I don't sell my spare accounts but I do pay full price for a family plan so that my pensioner parents don't have to live with ads.

  • +1

I had a handful of family accounts, I split the costs with people here. I divided the costs evenly, rounded to the nearest dollar. Absorbing whatever currency/price rises there were. Cos I set the price at the time for 12mths access.

I would hope that's normal. But it's the classifieds. Caveat Emptor.

    • Absorbing the cost is very noble.

      YouTube Premium Turkey October 2022 - 59.99 TRY/m https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/731994
YouTube Premium Turkey November 2024 (now only possible via iOS) - 209.99 TRY/m https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/879207

4x price increase in 2 years… assuming 2x in 1 year, why should you absorb that after putting in all the effort to set it up and top up the gift card balance etc?

I have run a Spotify family for a couple of years, and both of the last 2 years I've lost a few bucks because I charged exactly what the price was at the time and Spotify bumped their prices. Spotify I don't really care though, as it's an AU account so the price increase is minimal. When you've got YouTube doing significant price hikes in overseas countries… it's a bit of a risk. You'll end up worse off than just running your own solo account?

  • -1

So you are complaining about getting ripped off for the dodgy practice of including you as a “family” member of a service? If so the site should be cracking down on this dodgy practice.

    • +1

Dodgy? Can't be or there'd be something in the T&Cs. Like this, maybe:

YouTube family plans allow you to share membership benefits with up to 5 family members who live within the same residential address.

      • +1

        Yeah, something like that.

  • For example: YouTube family subs asking $40-$45 a year shared between 6 people!

Some people are actually on the Australian YouTube Premium Family membership which is $22.99 per month.

    22.99 * 12 = $275.88

Each family can have maximum of 6 people.

    $275.88 / 6 = $45.98pp for a year = $3.83 per month.

Still a better price than $13.99/month for individual

  • Just an FYI, if using an au family account, that person is now paying:

$32.99/MTH = $395.88/yr, so that's $65.98/yr for each sub to break even. They'd be running it at a loss to cover everyone else in that instance. Still a good deal for all involved if people are willing to take the risk

    • I would imagine they'll start asking people to pay more to match the increase too

  • I did the India thing and got kicked off around 6 months ago. worked well for many years

I'm curious about where I can pay someone to add me as a member for YouTube Premium.

Happy to take risks and pay 1 year in advance.

I see people talk of classifieds but where do I find this?

Please can someone help me out.

Also, should I use my standard Aussie Google ID for this or make a freah one just for Youtube content?

    Thanks

    Andrew

I used my existing Google ID… it’s got all my subscriptions etc. Can’t be bothered changing. Another reason to create a new ID is if you’re already in a Google family and/or can’t join the new family.

  • @vorsprung many thanks for the link,

I have never seen this on OB before after being a member for many years.

    Cheers.
