Car Recomendations around $15- $20k for Daily Driving & Uber?

Hey OzBargain, I’m looking for a car in the $15–20k price range that I can use for my daily commute and for occasional Uber driving.

I need something reliable with good fuel efficiency and low running costs. A bit of a fun or sporty feel would be a bonus.

Any suggestions?

Camry never ever fits into fun category - direct opposite infact.

  • Used Camry

It depends on the age and kilometres that you want

Step 1: check the rules for uber vehicles. Can you get something suitable for 20k?
Step 2: identify suitable vehicles in your budget.
Step 3: buy the best example of something japanese or korean that you like the look and feel of. Make sure its got decent rear seat space.

Uber used to have strict conditions and the cars were always newer and clean.

Now they're all crap cars, they must have loosened it

You either pick a "fun" car, or something which is reliable, efficient, and cheap to run. They are antithetical.

FWIW, most common Uber car is a Camry.

Fun is relative. I found my $1500 90s corolla a lot of fun to drive. Not a lot of power, handled fairly well. Cheap, relaible and easg to servics. Meant i could drive it fairly hard without getting into to much trouble. If i had the money, some new tyres and suspension work would have made it even more fun.

  • Toyota Mark X. It's just like a Camry, however they installed the more powerful V6 and it drives the rear wheels.

    • Hope they release the Toyota Crowns here. Was in Japan and took one for a drive, it’s a really nice car

      • Won't happen because it'll clash with Lexus is the reason they've given. I've seen a few older crowns but they're imports

      • You can get all the Crown models as a grey import. Even the latest hatchback style one are available locally at import dealers.

        • any idea how to find good jap imports company? And how to determine it not rust bucket?

          • @ATTS: Not really besides relying on online reviews. I can say that J-Spec has been good so far with the importation of my crown hybrid but I am just some person on the internet. You could find a local one to your location so if anything goes wrong you can annoy the shit outta them.

A good import broker will not purchase a rust bucket unless you know it is and want to buy it anyway. Some won't even entertain the idea of buying a rust bucket.

There is a full video about importing that Redriven has made. That should answer most of your importing concerns.

          • @ATTS: If it's already in the country you have the advantage of being able to test drive and put it up on a hoist to inspect it properly. It's the same as buying any second-hand car, the condition tells a lot about how it has been looked after. Look for service records as well, use google translate to read them.

You can save money and get exactly what you want if you import one yourself. This is a long process (min 3+ months) and has a high element of risk. Find a good importer to handle the process. Iron chef seems to get a good rap, although there are plenty of others, DYI research.

            • @JIMB0: Thanks, was th3re minimum 12 month ownership for personal imports fromjapan to aus?

        • Damn, didn’t know they were importing these!

    • 3.5L 237kW rear wheel drive large sedan? As an Uber and commutermobile?

You'd have to take out another mortgage for the petrol.

      • It wouldn't use that much if you take it easy, no more than an Aurion. It certainly ticks the box for fun factor.

Top end of your budget: VW Caddy. Suited to UberX, Uber Delivery, Amazon Flex

  • When I was in Melbourne, one Uber driver was driving a manual Renault. She seemed to have fun changing gears in Melbourne peak hour traffic. Oh, hold on, you said reliable. Scratch that then.

  • Hyundai I30 , Suzuki Swift / Baleno ?

  • Kia Cerato GT?
