I Compared JB Hi-Fi Online Price Match Vs in Person Today

I saw this deal today on the Pixel 9 Pro for $1297 and decided to bite the bullet.

I was curious if the live chat would be willing to get me a better price and they were happy to reduce it down to $1284.

Now I was even more curious if the staff in store would also be willing to give it at that price with no context. And I wanted to see what it looked like in person as well before committing. I told a staff member that I'm interested in the phone and if they can do a better price. They immediately say "It's on sale so we can't" but then I insist "Could you at least check on the system if there's anything better you can do?" and he goes on his computer and pretends to check and says again that he can't give it for any less.

Then I told him that I was comparing the live chat response vs in person and that if online could give it for $1284 then surely he can too. He begrudgingly checked again and agreed to do it for that price.

So today I learnt that there's no harm in asking the live chat for a slightly better deal and live chat > in person.

So today I learnt that there's no harm in asking the live chat for a slightly better deal and live chat > in person.

Today I learnt it was better to ask live chat and not bother to go instore. All that work and only ended up saving 1% aka $13.

You have to go in store anyway to pick up

  • 1297 to 1284.. while jb made billion profit… i wont buy at that price.

Online chat probably don’t get commissions so they are willing to do a deal and most likely encouraged too. The sales guy wants to make more than the hourly rate for answering a bunch of questions from each customer all day

Surely he'd be inclined to shave $13 off to make a commission

When I was in retail sales, commission was on profit. If all the profit is gone, there’s no commission.

Done this a few times, you will always get a better deal with online chat.

I find that online chat have some range which they're allowed to cut a deal for, and will always just give you near the bottom of that range to give you a positive experience and send you on your way.

In-store, it's always much more variable. I've worked in FMCG sales a long time ago - given how quickly "cheap" consumer goods move, you're almost never going to "convert" a customer into making a sale. People are either window shopping, or ready to buy. The best salespeople working at JB and the like are all just identifying those that look like they are ready to buy something and swoop in to help them out.

When you work in a store all day, you realise that presentation and attitude often makes a huge difference to whether a salesperson will help you with the price or not. There are plenty of customers who are rude, act entitled, talk with condescension to staff, and do not respect other customers (e.g. being obnoxious and loud). These customers almost always never get a good price if they ask.

    Woah! $12.97!

So they gave you a 1% discount and you felt proud enough to post about it? Good for you, dude. Congrats.

  • No. Today you learned about commissions

  • I got 9% off an Ipad in store by showing them an amazon sale on a ugly blue one at that price.

They didn’t have any blue ones so refused, then i just thanked them and said ill try office works.

Not sure if that was a trigger word for them, but they told me to wait a minute and the manager came over and cleared it for sale 😂

(Plot twist, all the Office works near me were out of stock and i knew that already haha)
