Supercharge batteries aren't what they used to be.

    https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/supercharge-batter…

I got a new supercharge battery last year and it can't even run the dashcam for a day. Leave the car parked up for a week and the battery is under 12v. Yes I've checked the current draw, its only ~50mA and the car is charging it properly. Very disappointing.

    • Thats strange. Ive found the opposite. Maybe get it tested. Century are pretty average sadly but yhe supercharge are great, they have long warranties and always test at least 10% over their stated CCA (which is how all batteries should test). Their revplus bike batteries are the goto battery for me. Shame they don't do more sizes.

      • They used to be great. I was checking all sorts of things on the car as I didn't suspect the battery. I hooked up the negative terminal through a multimeter and watched it for a half hour incase the current spiked, it ranged between 25-70 mA, which is quite acceptable. Then I googled supercharge batteries and found that they changed production facilities and went downhill in 2018.

      • Reviews suggest they do everything they can to avoid making good on warranty claims. May or may not be typical but it was enough for me to look elsewhere.

    • I've had one for last 6 years and only looking now as its jsut starting to not hold charge as well. I have a 4WD with full aux 12 volt setup, and lots of accessories, front and rear dashcams….Lots of muppets who would be reviewing that know nothing about batteries and proper maintenance of them. Of course some would fail just due to mass production. Plus how long do stores keep these batteries in stock and keep selling them, years? not pointing finger at this retailer but these look like an older series of batteries before current generation. I was in autobarn last week and the the newest supercharge gold batteries are updated from the series in these pictures.

      • You must have gotten one of the last good ones 6 years ago.

      • Many/most are maintenance free, that's what the MF in the product stands for. Images on websites can quickly get out of date and some retailers have special labels for "their" version so I wouldn't be placing too much emphasis on that. Simple job to ring and ask what the manufacture date is.

  • Maintence also includes making sure they are sufficiently charged when not in use for extended periods. This comes under maintenence. People who dont drive far enough and often enough or who think batteries dont lose charge if not used are shortening their battery life. But you knew that.

Oh and regarding selling older versions, the batteries listed on this seller are old models, less warranty period and on some batteries I've checked lower CCA for the exact same model as sold in autobarn. So yes there is absolute variance in clearly older manufacturing line of exact model number. But you know knew that right?

    • Agree with all you said but in some ways it becomes a little random. I have 18 registered vehicles (Stupid I know but most are bikes). Not wasting money on batteries has become my thing. Last time I needed a battery for the landcruiser i tested a heap at my local friendly battery supplier. Even brands that I normally trust didnt necessarily test well. Usuall the SOC doesn't affect the CCA test results. The variance between identical batteries surprised me. I know what brands to avoid who always overstate their ratings. A battery cca is rated at negative 18 degrees C after 30 seconds of cranking.. so testing in a shop at ambient temperature should result in a 10 to 20% higher figure.. most do not. But you knew that……

      • I know what brands to avoid

For bike batteries basically anything you haven't heard of or anything stocked by amx or mx store (both companies sell crap brands that have sat on the shelf for years)
My goto brands for bikes are fullriver (usa) Deka and Revplus by supercharge. If you are desperate then motobat or varta. Avoid SSB.
For cars my goto was always supercharge. Long warranties and always test well. Century have been average for years but surprisingly the last car battery i bought was a century. Out of all the batteries in local Every battery store in the size I wanted it tested the best (beating varta panasonic and some other big battery brands) It surprised even the salesman. Ive heard since that they have lifted their game recently. Biggest surprise for me in the last 10 years was buying an Amaron (India) battery when nothing else was available for the landcruiser. That battery was a beast and still tests well 7 years on. My advice to mates is find a good battery shop who doesnt mind testing the batteries for you and go wild. The results can be surprising.

          • @feisty: Thanks, any experience with Exide AGM batteries?

            • @JIMB0: No. Although Im sure that they would be a better choice than many others. Ive just replaced two dead agms in my camper. An ssb and a century after 5 years of inactivity. Where they any good? Well they did the job. Full size agms are a little harder to test as usually you are testing capacity and Ive never wanted to run a battery down that low. I've found length of warranty to be a good indicator as to the quality of an agm as a useful indicator. I replaced them with a mid quality 200ah lithium battery (cheaper than 2 100ah agms) and on last week's trip enjoyed having 200ah usable capacity vs the 100ah I used to have. Looking forward to the lower discharge rate in storage too
