No, but their question is not as dumb as it may seem on the surface.

I think the point they are alluding to is that any physical Metcash-issued gift cards may work at all Metcash brands (e.g. IGA, Cellarbrations, Mitre 10), not just the brand on the gift card itself.

For example, this current AMEX cashback deal has unearthed the following information:

I am not 100% sure whether the physical Mitre 10 gift cards from this current deal are also prepaid eftpos gift cards that are restricted to specific businesses, but if it is the case, then there is a good chance the physical Mitre 10 gift cards work at other Metcash brands (e.g. IGA).

As for the digital Mitre 10 gift cards, I highly doubt those work outside Metcash's hardware brands, because I think only Metcash's hardware brands have digital gift cards.

The physical cards in-store only have a barcode on them (no magnetic strip) and the wording states they can be used at Mitre 10. I'd say there's a good chance you could buy one with a celebrations card if you've got the time and don't mind being locked into Mitre 10.

Does mitre 10 price match/beat bunnings? Cant find anything online for AU stores

    • No, they don't. They only price match their own online price.

  • Better off to save money by not buying the gift card and losing the entire lot.

I would not invest my money in mitre10. Remember what happened to Angus & Robertson gift card, Virgin gift card, dicksmith gift card …

I wont mind investing in Bunnings , Coles , Woolworths or JBHifi( because they will never going to go bust) but not mitre10.

    • Mitre 10 is owned by Metcash FYI. They also own IGA, Total Tools, Home Hardware, Campbells, Cellabrations etc. About 5400 stores/outlets Australia wide according to website.

    • If you buy a gift card on your credit card, I expect you could initial a charge-back should the issuer of the gift card decline to honour the gift card due to insolvency etc.

      • There's only a limited time for charge backs. 45 days comes to mind.

        • 120 days in most cases.

Mitre10 is not going bust. First off most Mitre 10 stores are privately owned and they are part of the Mitre 10 buying group, so you might see individual stores close but not the franchise going bust. In recent years though Mitre 10 (Metcash) have been taking over some stores and expanding.

As a whole you have a lot more buying options with Mitre 10 than you do Bunnings as if you're willing to travel then some Mitre 10 stores are Weber premium agents, Kings agents, they sell Yeti, Stihl, Ego and probably many more I cant think of. Now admittedly I wish these were the shop local gift cards that have all Metcash stores on there.

For anyone in Tasmania, Clennett's Mitre 10 is currently selling Mitre 10 gift cards at 20% off in their stores until 24 December.

    • Saw that the other day and considered posting… seems like a good deal.
