Best Things to Watch on Apple TV

I have an apple store credit of about $140 which is just doing nothing because Apple sells nothing I want or anything my friends that have Apple products want.

I had the idea of giving Apple TV a go. I only subscribe to Stan and that's all I'll want long-term but figured that there must be some good content on Apple TV I havent yet seen or know about.

Can you people recommend anything worth watching?

To give you a bit of an idea of my taste:

I love the TV shows:

Community
Arrested Development
Both Offices
IT crowd
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul
The Wire

Films:
historical epics
sci fi
Charlie Kaufman stuff
80's 90's cinema

Love a good doco, be it the true crime ones, history,
(dont watch sport)

Thanks in advance!

    TV Shows
    1. "Ted Lasso" – While it revolves around sports (soccer), it’s less about the sport and more about humor, character development, and heart. If you liked The Office's mix of humor and heart, this could surprise you.

    2. "Mythic Quest" – From the creators of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, it's a hilarious workplace comedy set in a video game development studio. It has a strong "IT Crowd" vibe with dysfunctional but lovable characters.

    3. "Severance" – If you enjoyed the surrealism of Charlie Kaufman's work, this sci-fi thriller may intrigue you. It explores corporate dystopia, identity, and the nature of work-life balance in a deeply unsettling way.

    4. "The Afterparty" – A murder mystery comedy where each episode is presented from a different character's perspective, using a different film genre (like noir, musical, and action). If you like genre-bending storytelling, this one's for you.

    5. "Black Bird" – A gripping crime drama inspired by true events. It's more on the "Breaking Bad" and "The Wire" side of things, with intense character studies and moral ambiguity.

    6. "For All Mankind" – An alternate history sci-fi epic about the space race, imagining what would happen if the Soviets landed on the moon first. It scratches the sci-fi and historical epic itch.

    7. "Foundation" – Based on Isaac Asimov's legendary sci-fi series, it's a massive, visually stunning space opera. If you love grand, cerebral sci-fi like Blade Runner or 2001: A Space Odyssey, this is worth a shot.

    8. "Slow Horses" – A spy thriller with plenty of British dry wit, featuring Gary Oldman as a cranky, washed-up intelligence officer. It has sharp writing, much like The Wire or Better Call Saul in terms of tone.

    9. "Shrinking" – From the creators of Ted Lasso, starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, it's about a therapist who starts telling clients exactly what he thinks. It’s got humor and heart in a way that fans of The Office might appreciate.

    10. "Servant" – If you enjoyed surreal, unsettling works like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this eerie psychological thriller might interest you. It’s produced by M. Night Shyamalan, so expect slow-burn mystery and weird twists.

    Movies
    1. "The Tragedy of Macbeth" – If you like historical epics, this visually stunning, black-and-white adaptation of Shakespeare's play stars Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. It’s a cinematic masterpiece.

    2. "Finch" – Tom Hanks stars in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi story with his dog and a robot. If you like intimate, thoughtful sci-fi (like Moon or Ex Machina), you may appreciate this.

    3. "Greyhound" – A WWII naval battle film starring Tom Hanks. If you enjoy historical war epics with intense, realistic combat scenes, this one delivers.

    4. "Swan Song" – A sci-fi drama about a man dealing with terminal illness and the possibility of being replaced by a clone. It has that Charlie Kaufman-esque, introspective feel about mortality and identity.

    5. "CODA" – Won the Best Picture Oscar. It’s a heartfelt coming-of-age story about a girl from a deaf family who discovers a love for music. It’s not sci-fi or epic, but its emotional depth might catch you by surprise.

    6. "The Banker" – A historical drama set in the 1950s about two Black entrepreneurs navigating racism in the business world. If you enjoy The Big Short or Hidden Figures, you’ll probably enjoy this.

    Documentaries
    1. "The Big Conn" – A true-crime series about one of the biggest social security fraud cases in U.S. history. If you enjoy Dirty Money or The Jinx, you'll probably find this one fascinating.

    2. "The Line" – A true-crime docuseries about a controversial Navy SEAL. It explores morality, war crimes, and how the public perception of soldiers is shaped.

    3. "Prehistoric Planet" – Narrated by David Attenborough, this is essentially Planet Earth but with dinosaurs, brought to life using modern CGI and real-world ecology. If you like history and natural history docs, this is a must-see.

    4. "Beastie Boys Story" – If you enjoy documentaries with 80s/90s nostalgia, this live storytelling event featuring the surviving members of the Beastie Boys is both hilarious and emotional.

    5. "Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds" – A Werner Herzog doc exploring the impact of meteorites on Earth and human culture. If you appreciate quirky but philosophical documentaries, Herzog is your guy.

Disclaimer: These aren't my picks — I'm just the messenger. Watch at your own risk, and don't blame me if you end up questioning your life choices.
I hope one day you will learn to fish as well as me.

  • Throwing the shows i've seen into a Tier List -

  • I had the idea of giving Apple TV a go

Use up the current free offer before using your credit…

  • Ted Lasso, even if you’re not a football/soccer fan it’s an excellent show because it is very character driven

  • -1

    Bad Monkey

  • Are you talking about Apple TV+?

In my opinion the top 10 things to watch, in order of quality and enjoyability are:

    1. Slow Horses

    2. For all mankind

    3. Severance

    4. The Morning Show (Morning Wars)

    5. Dark Matter (it's actually not that good, but I'm a SF/physics addict)

    6. Ted Lasso (not a fan of the last season though)

    7. Bad Sisters

    8. Presumed Innocent

    9. Disclaimer

    10. Blackbird

    • wanting to watch 9 and possibly 8, but, i think 2,4,5,7 should be cut from the list. And blackbird is def. better than some of the others ;)

Also, Slow Horses is great, but I would put Severance above it - only thing is we only have one season of it at the moment whereas slow horses is smashing it out.

  • Thank you to you all! I appreciate you taking the time.
    That looks like plenty.

I'll probably start with Ted Laso and Slow Horses.

    Have a Merry Christmas

  • I loved the first few seasons of Dickenson, but its not for everyone.

have you tried 30 Rock and Parks and Rec (both on stan) - with the shows you like, I think you will like both of these (obligatory - first season of parks n rec isnt great, you could almost skip it)

    • Yes I have watched both of those actually. They are great.
      Thanks, I'll look into Dickenson.
