  • Might and Magic series is awesome! But I wonder if they are the speech versions in 4 & 5 or the disk based non speech. I own the CD ROM version but can't play it without MSCDEX because the game is very old. I think I might repurchase it.

EDIT: Ick.. You can't separate the M&M from the Heroes series. It's $25 when all I want is two games I already own.

Master of MAgic is another awesome game that I've had difficulty getting running. But $2.99 is still a lot of money for one old game. And that is 50% off. I don't want to pay more than $1 for it.

Once you buy the games, can you redownload them any time from the site?

    • I am pretty sure you can download it from your account page.

      Yes.

The GOG business model is to sell you the packaged download ready to run for a low price.
Sure, I could trawl abandonware/torrent sites and fiddle around with DOSbox. Or pay $2.99 for somebody to do it for me.
If you'd rather spend time playing, $3 isn't much to spend.

      • I'm saying compared to the market value of games these days (99c on smart phone), $3 is a lot to ask for a 1994 game that takes up 7MB and was quite dated even by 1994 standards. A much higher budget goes into iOS and Android games these days which retail for 99c.

They normally want to charge $6 for it. Sorry but no. I've bought modern games on Steam sales for less than that, and these are AAA high budget games.

        • From my experience most cheap mobile games get their money from advertising, micro transactions or just selling your privacy. The comparison to more recent PC titles is more fair, and all titles seem to gravitate to the $5 point after a while.

        • Plenty of mobile games I own have no ads in them. In fact, it's the free version that has ads, the 99c version exists for those who want an ad free experience. They don't need to rely on ads when selling a game for 99c because millions are willing to pay for them since they are that cheap. I don't think millions would pay $3 for a mobile game though, unless it's really awesome.

Modern games on Steam go on sale for below $5 (even games released within 12 months some times), and these are games that cost millions to make, with full on video and voice acting, as well as story. $3 (or $6 when not on special) is a lot to ask. Sorry.

… So you can sell their details and/or use micro transactions. There may be exceptions but they are rare. Also note that usually 99c is the sale price, not the normal price.

Had a quick look for examples on OzBargain and found this:
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87722
Which is both not directly through steam and an indie title.

          And this:
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87933
Which is still $5 and and indie title.

Closest I could find to your description was this:
          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87714
Being again, not directly through steam and over $5.

          1. Not all of these specials I see are reported on OZB.
          2. Some require a US VPN for cheaper pricing.
          3. Comparing a 1994 7MB game as being comparable in value to say Dead Space or Prince of Persia is asinine (both of which I bought years ago for $3 on Steam).

If you doubt my claims then doubt them. I would still rather pay even $10 for a game released in the last few years than $3 (or $6 when not on sale) for a 1994 game on GOG. Forget it.

Hell, would rather buy Angry Birds for $3 than MOM, and I love MOM. It just doesn't reflect market value.

… So you can sell their details and/or use micro transactions. There may be exceptions but they are rare. Also note that usually 99c is the sale price, not the normal price.

Microtransactions add extra content to the game, such as new levels. You don't have to buy them if you don't want to. And they don't have my details. Any time I'm asked to enter anything, I never give real details.

As for 99c being a sale price, maybe for iOS users. Not for me. Even so, sales happen so often it doesn't matter.

If you don't want to compare sale prices, then we'll have to use MOM's non sale price of $6. Not a chance here.

MOM is on special at half price for $3, for only 24 hours, eh… After that it's $6 for an abandonware game. Maybe that's worth it for you, it's not for me.

Also, you throw around the word 'indy' as a perjorative. I can assure you, many of these indy games cost more to make than MOM did, which recycled assets from older games and was always a low budget game in itself.

  • caesar 3 woohoo!

  • What's the point of buying Heroes of MM 1-5 - All the games are very similar. If you buy #4 , 3 becomes obsolete.
Also good old games are priced the same as a lot of good 1/3yo games on sale in Steam. Being time more scarce than $5, it's hard to understand why people will buy 10yo games from GOG. Personally I do it, because I want to get rid of all CD/DVD without loosing the games (and I already know that I will never have time to play them all)

    • Not true at all. HOMM4 was the red headed step child of the series. If you ask most HOMM fans, 3 was the better game than 4. The games are all similar in style and objective, but there are huge changes between games for example in the way your heroes level up, their skills system, magic system, units and factions, story, game mechanics, etc.

4 was the one that was radically different to the rest of the series. For example, Heroes actually participate in battle and can die in combat. It was also the only game that allowed you to have an army without a hero leading it.

3 is most definitely not made obsolete by 4, except in graphics. But the animations in 4 are pretty awful. 4 was the game I liked the least, and many a HOMM fan will tell you the same thing.

  • I'm getting to the point where I've got most the ones I want. Bundles don't interest me. Nor does 50% off (most of these I just can't value paying $4.99 for).

Needs to be 75% off individual items. Sorry, GOG.

  • Is it just me or are Steam downloads even slower than they were 8 years ago?

  • Cheapest I've seen Faster Than Light. Excellent game.

  • Thief 1 & 2; FTL; Ultima (especially 7); Heromes M&M 3 and Witcher 2 are all good games. It's good to be able to install and run games without requiring internet verification each time.
