Price drop/war! We had the low-cost Cebu to Japan from $476 Return, and the lovely China Southern from $665 Return, but now the two heavy-weights in quality to Japan - ANA and JAL have both droppped some amazing fares next year!

While most people focus on flights to Tokyo, it's interesting to note that it's often similar or even cheaper to fly to one of the other cities from Australia, and I've included examples to Tokyo, Fukuoka, Osaka, Sapporo and Okinawa.

I also have an article on the top 5 most popular hotels in Tokyo for under $120.

Japan is the new Bali.. just be (profanity) respectful to the Japanese please

    • +1

pretty good place to be with the currency rate but it adds up real quick haha

      • +4

came back a couple of weeks ago, its the travelling by train that adds up, also buying all the drinks in the vending machines and getting the capsule toys

      • +11

Because people have gone from being respectful over there, to now having the drongos being able to afford to visit with their centrelink payments and they show the same amount of respect in Tokyo as they do to the shop owners in Popies I St in Kuta.

          • +6

@TightAl: That's the point. They take their awful attitude with them to Bali, but now that Japan is cheap, they are going there too.

              • @TightAl: Damn you really decided to go full MAGA didn't you?

                • -4

@Cyphar: Got nothing to do with MAGA but ok

              • +2

@TightAl: That's like saying Germans are Nazis and we don't need to be respectful to Germans.

                • -3

@Penalty boxer: Listening to foreigners scream about being respectful when travelling japan is so insufferable, let's go online and keep repeating this meanwhile the uncouthed aren't even on OzB

  • Your cebu to Japan link above takes you to a okx/btc deal?

    • I have no idea what that was, fixed it quickly but you got there first. It's def fixed now.

  • Is it safe to book through MyTrip?

  • +2

So many deals to Japan, no wonder Japan is now over crowded with tourists. Can't take any good pictures with so many tourists in the way.

    • Some of the newer phones have AI to help remove objects/ppl from yr photos. https://removeobjectphoto.com/blog/samsung-remove-person-fro…

      • +1

So it's not a photo. It's not based in reality. It's not a slice of time.
It's a counterfeit representation of what was captured.
Shouldn't photos be memories rather than fake designs?

        • -1

Keep in mind, even an analogue camera is an interpretation of what’s “real”

          • +1

@WhyAmICommenting: yeah and your visual perception is an interpretation of the photons which activate your cones and rods and thus not a true reflection of reality. what are you talking about

            • @Quantumcola: Also true. And then maybe we live in the matrix. What are you talking about like you know reality definitely?

    • +6

Yes in Tokyo/Kansai, but Japan is so much more than these two places. Take for example in was recently in Shizuoka and there was basically only a handful of Tourists that I saw.

One of my top tips is to go out and explore the regions as the general vibe is just sometimes much better.

      • Not even all of Kansai. I used to live there and go back frequently to visit family. Osaka & Kyoto are packed but Nagoya isn't. And when you go down south into the region, places like Ise, Toba & Iga-ueno (Where I lived) have hardly any tourists even though they are among the historically richest areas of Japan. Nara's still pretty decent too.

        • +4

Yeah my point was that Japan is such a large country that its easy to escape the hoards of Tourists by just travelling out of the major hotspots like Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.

Visiting places like you listed is also very nice as they are less turned off by Tourists and you can usually have a more enjoyable time.

Edit: I love visiting the Sika Deer in Nara

          • @Pcoder: heading up to sapporo/hokkaido in Spring/Summer would be a great example of this - beautiful time of year up there, easy to get around, not having to deal with major winter/ski tourists/ice festival folk, and amazing scenery that is actually more accessible without snow.

        • +1

Nara might be lovely, but to me felt like a giant tourist trap and was easily the most expensive place to stay and eat during my entire trip.
The deer are great, but for me it would only be a day trip in the future, and only to see them.

      • I found the only extremely touristy spots that I regretted going to were a couple of famous shrines that I guess people go to for their Instagram photos.

    • +1

Been that way for 20 years

      • +2

Yeah, Tokyo has been the highest populated city on Earth since 2000.

    • There are about 6 places that tourists go to in Tokyo, 4 in Kyoto, 2 in Osaka,

Simply avoid those. It's very easy,

      • Which places are these please?

    • what a strange take

  • HELP

I love the new Bali, I mean Japan deals. Seeking to know the best recommendations:
    1. When (time of year) to visit.
    2. City to visit which kids 3 - 13 yo and/ Wife who didn’t like visiting Hong Kong would potentially enjoy

    Thank you in advance.

    • +3

I always avoid Summer and monsoon season. Basically mid-June to early-October. Any time outside of that you're going to have a great time unless you can't stand the cold. In saying that, you can buy affordable and great quality winter wear from any Uniqlo in Japan during that time if you feel you're underprepared. It's actually my favourite time of the year to go!

      • Thank you noted.

    • And why didn't they like Hong Kong? Be more specific.

      • It’s complicated, I got an answer I never understood. I decide that I would avoid that. Kids learning Japanese at school so it’s very popular at my house. I have no clue about Japan besides their good cars. All I want is a good holiday next year. Hahaha

      • +1

HK is cramped and overpriced for what it is. I didn't really enjoy it either when i went over there.

    • +3

I would consider cherry blossom season, it's a treat to catch.
I have been 3 times in the past 5 years in different seasons. Summer/Autumn feels twice as hot as Australia because of how humid it is. If it's your first time I would avoid going during this time. This deal doesn't really cover Winter, which is my personal favourite time to visit.

For your wife, Sapporo is my recommendation, it has fewer tourists (not saying none, just fewer). The seafood is top-notch there if you're into that. They have underground shopping which is convenient and fun to explore.

Your kids would love Tokyo (you'll need to research), there's so many activities they'll never be bored.

      • +1

catching cherry blossom in sapporo/hokkaido may be a really good way of seeing the best

      • Sounds good. Thank you

    • what didn't they like about HK? Amount of people? Tourist attractions? Serious question as it will impact response.

I would say avoid late july through to early october, particularly in the south, unless you're a fan of intense tropical weather - and I suspect with kids, that's not going to be great.

Also - what are you/the family interested in?

      • Exactly, I got neg'd for the same question lol

If the answer is we don't like crowds… well i've got some bad news

        • yeah… some crowds are better than others but … if we're talking big-time tourist places in japan, there's a lot of crowds and it's not pretty.

      • It’s complicated, I got an answer I never understood. I decide that I would avoid that. Kids learning Japanese at school so it’s very popular at my house. I have no clue about Japan besides their good cars. All I want is a good holiday next year. Hahaha

        • They'll probably love Disneyland in tokyo and Nintendo world in osaka. Spend the rest of the time in nature. Kyoto is crowded in many places but for a good reason

        • +1

What defines a good holiday for you and your family?
Touristy stuff - themeparks? etc - If so, Tokyo/Osaka is your friend
Cultural - so much here, historical, but also just… experiencing Japan - but it can be done calmly or intensely….
Nature - again, so much - you've got tropical reefs down the bottom up to frozen sea drifts up the top.

          This might help - https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=family+friendly…

          • +1

            @TheRealCher: and Belongsinforums thank you.

Video is awesome and helpful. For me a good holiday includes a bit of nature, relaxation, lots of good food (love many types of foods including Japanese food) and exploring locations plus new experiences. I would love to Tokyo drift in Japan, according to google it’s a thing!

            • +1

@Ginger1: these are not necessarily all for the one trip as they are scattered but based on your comments you can look at: Kanazawa (highly recommended), Hiroshima/Miyajima/Mitaki-dera (touristy but not too bad), Mt Koya/Koyasan, Matsumoto, Shikoku as a whole (Naoshima Island maybe?), Nikko and/or Takayama (both touristy but with some nature etc, esp Nikko outside of the 3 main temples up near the lake), Nozawa or Yudanaka onsen/towns, Kamikochi (nature).

Its definitely worth going to Kyoto, but there are a lot of temples/shrines that are not busy at all and worthwhile eg Nazenji, even Kodaji which is right next door to the most popular toursist temple (Kiyomizudera). Of the 'big sites' in Kyoto, I would go to Fushimi Inari as its pretty impressive and walk up the hill for 30 min or so, but skip the Arashiyama bamboo forest, Kinkakuji (golden pavilion) and Kiyomizudera (unnless you turn up early). all interesting but so so crowded.

https://www.japan-guide.com should be your first port of call, absolutely invaluable.

            • @Ginger1: I think from what you've said Tokyo is a good place to start - and there's lots on that makes it family friendly, easy to get around, safe, and enjoyable for adults and kids of many ages. There'll be lots of other recommendations and there are other threads about what to do in tokyo, where to stay, how to travel etc.
The great thing about tokyo also is because of the public transport system, even by "slow" train, two hours and you're in a forest, or near mt fuji, or at a beach, or at a hundreds-of-years old village that is a huge museum that you and the kids can explore. I'm not sure how far away it is from tokyo but there's also a british world theme park you can visit, should the need arise… https://youtu.be/RbXJHO1as2g

as for food, you'll be spoilt by choice and price, and because of the sense of cultural pride Japanese have, the food even in cheap places is of a high standard compared to what we might get here. Many a single traveler has existed on 7/11 food alone because of how fresh and affordable it is.

I had to google to discover what this thing called tokyo drifting is, but indeed it is a thing lol. May you slide well :-)

    Waiting for September flights specials…

Never been so disapointed to be from brisbane

  • Need to book holidays for when my son finishes his HSC next year. Are most airline reservations open up for 11/12-2025 bookings yet?

    • often they open up about 10 months out… see if you can sign up on the airlines for notification
      november is easier/cheaper than december

  • +2

OP the filtering and calendar on that site are really broken.

    Eg:
    - Your links don't bring up the airlines you're referring to
    - When I click the airline (ANA) the price calendar at the top still shows prices for all airlines

  • +1

Come on, one of you start flying from BNE. Please

Qantas vs Jetstar is not real competition

  • +2

Can you group all the departing locations instead of the arriving destination? Doesn’t make sense to group the arriving destinations unless people live in multiple cities which most people don’t

  • where is a good value place to stay in Osaka for 2+2?

    • +1

I found the chain budget hotels on booking dot com to be excellent value. Like APA hotel

      • -3

        something something something nazi

    • We've stayed a couple of times around Shin Osaka, as particularly if you get one of JR West's excellent passes it can be quite easy to say have a day trip to Kurashiki (Nice canal town). Even if not using JR system, it's also connected to Osaka Metro and a few Private railways too.

Airbnb or an apartment rental might suite you better as you can usually get places with 4 beds/futons for not much more than a hotel.

    • I stayed Ibis Budget near Umeda, value was good - very basic hotel but Western Chain I guess. Great location, 10 min walk tops to Osaka station.

The Japanese business chains are all good value too - APA gets negative wrap online, but mainly because the owner is anti-semitic and very political. The hotel itself are decent standard, small rooms thin walls, but that's standard Japan.

Dontonbori is a super touristy district, but where many of the other hotels are. Personally if you're looking for day trips using the Shinkanzen or tbh anywhere, I'd say Umeda is a better area to stay in from my experience. You can get to Dontonbori easily, but more importantly save lots of time getting to Shin-Osaka

      • I’ve seen the thin walls comment a few times. Anecdotally, I stayed in several APA hotels across the country and didn’t have any issues with noise from neighbouring rooms.

    • Toyoko Inns are the basic business hotel- but their mattresses are hard!

  • Don’t be a novice like me and book for the hot periods, because they are hot!! Keep an eye out for good deals and good weather

    • Summer is hot and humid sure, but still fun to travel, lots of festivals on that one can only see in the summer months.

I've clicked on six Sydney to Tokyo/Osaka links and there are no JAL/ANA flights. I feel like I got baited and wasted my time.

    • The link gives you all the options for different flights with the specified departure and returning dates starting with the cheapest one first.

You have to click on the "Show More Flights" at the bottom of the page and you will see JAL or ANA flights eventually.

    • you use the filter to select the airline of your choice. You could click show more but it could take a while to get to the one you want.

    • Does JAL / ANA not come with in-flight food? and you have to pay extra?

      • +1

Yes, they do have inflight meals. They are full service airlines.

  • All these flights miss the Easter/ANZAC Day period, unfortunately. You're looking at at least $2000 ex Sydney. :(

  • Good for summer-exclusive activities like hiking Mt. Fuji or going to traditional cultural festivals or music festivals, but otherwise it's really hot and fair chance of typhoons ruining your trip. Still waiting for these kinds of deals in winter for snow sports and snowy rural Japan.

  • Will there be more sales for March - April? Or is that over? Or is return for $1200 with JAL during that period a good price?

  • If you are traveling to Europe and has layover more than 12 hours, do JAL provides complimentary hotel for this period? TIA
