China Southern is a 4-star airline and hubs through Guangzhou, China to a ton of Asian destinations, including Japan.

These are the best dates I've found, but if the dates you want aren't there, try them anyway as I can't search every single combination!

Summary:
Melbourne to Tokyo (6 Jan - 26 Jun) from $665 return
Sydney to Tokyo (6 Jan - 26 Jun) from $699 return
Brisbane to Tokyo (6 Jan - 26 Jun) from $690 return

Also compare with Singapore Airlines from all key Aus ports to Tokyo, Osaka or Fukuoka although these were a while back, so some prices may have changed on certain dates/routes.

The cherry blossom or sakura is never perfectly predictable, but some early predictions are below:

not bad price, but the layover is way too long.

Can you extend the layer over to a few days?

      • Book multicity on all Chinese carriers and extend the layover for up to 30 days free of charge.

For variety check Xiamen, Shenzhen, Air China (Beijing) and China Eastern (Shanghai) on Kiwi.com for the return flight if you want to go to a different hub city on return.

    • layover varies a bit depending on the flight. Eg I just picked one of the dates above and changed journey time to max 20 hours.

      https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/flights/SYD3105TYO19061?ticket=CZ17487279001748784000000995(SYD,CAN)(CAN,NRT)17503428001750407900001025(NRT,CAN)(CAN,SYD)_bfc308a9a15f8d1967730cd1d827e5b8_47466_Mytrip.com&marker=171356.map.Zz2ca7add8ad054ccb8c02fb1-171356.$1489&locale=en

Suddenly the layover is 2h.40 each way.

  • Not a single sale this year includes the dates I need, guh. (forever cursing the great deal an American friend got and wanting to meet up with them on such dumb dates.)

    • what dates?

      • They're going March 18th-April 9th. They caught some random Delta airlines sale several months ago and no sale here since has included those dates, lol. I can push it out by a few days each end of course, but weeks would push it and all the sales seem to be that. Far earlier and far later.

Just a nuisance. I haven't given up yet though. Just gotta squeeze every penny.

Thanks as ever for the deal posting though. I check every one.

Oh man, try https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/flights/MEL1803TYO100… - it's almost perfect, and it's with Philippine Airlines for ~$756. Really enjoyed flying with them, although Manila airport is pretty rough around the edges. If you play with the filters you can make the stopover only 3-6 hours each way as well.

        • Never got a notification for this reply, sorry! I appreciate it. And first time I've heard someone speak of that airline. I confess I've seen them a lot in my searches but never gave them or the Manila stopover a second thought.

Will look a lil closer to see if I can make it work. Cheers.

Twice i have booked and both flights cancelled. First one, I went to airport three times. Eventually got put on emirates on the third day (two days proir to my wedding). Wife is travelling now next weekend and got cancellation email for her too. This time, i called and asked them to put her on thai which they did. Not behd as 2x23kg baggage and cheaper fare gets you thai or emirates so can't complain.

I am afraid even transferring in China. Last time I couldn't take photos in a China airport. I will avoid it forever.
