Was looking at the AVR-S970H deal and started looking around for other models and found this, seems like a pretty good deal but my knowledge of AV receivers is pretty limited.

The X1800H is a 2024 model so should have newer features and is part of the Denon X range which is their more premium range.

Nah.. good speakers just hit differently… yeah the sound bars have come a long way and are the way to go over cheap speakers or when aesthetics are a priority (read-in wife says no to big speakers)

you can only have this opinion if you had poor speakers, or poor overall calibration

nothing can beat the physics of big tower set of speakers

    • Bad advice

    • Terrible advice, soundbar lol

bought this AVR a few months ago, it's perfect - eARC, settings, etc. it just works beautifully

it has 2x more power than I need for those concerned with "just 80W per channel", never used it above -10dB in my living / dinning / kitchen area

it is also smaller than most AVRs which is nice

    • I am still tossing up puchasing it, what speaker/setup are you using it with?

      • +2

PSB X2T fronts (bi amped), XC center, Alpha P5 rears

other than this AVR, my next choice would be the X3800H, but only if you have over 5k in speakers alone

got it yesterday from TGG commercial for $765. Noticed even after linking it to google home, I cannot control ON and OFF via google assist :(

Just a suggestion here, are you not using eARC/ARC from your source? This receiver should turn on/off with the source turning on/off when using that input method

      • Noob here, I connected chrome cast to denon and then connected denon to hisense tv via HDMI cable. what will be the source? chrome cast or hisense tv?

        • TV is your source, for aaronsd comment regarding eARC/ARC. i.e. Ask to turn off the TV (if supported by the TV) via Google Assist, then the receiver will turn off as well. Asking Google Assist to turn off the Chromecast won't turn off the receiver nor TV on my X-1800H.

  • Good price, it was also this price at JB/TGG/etc for Black Friday sales.

I needed a new amp for my parents, but ended up with the S670H for $595 instead, couldn't justify the extra ~$300 for their basic needs.

X1800H does have Audyssey MultEQ XT which is better than the S670H and other lower models.

    For the experts:
I have been looking for an AVR to replace my JBL 5.1 soundbar.
I also have a Panasonic 4K bluray DP-UB820 unlocked from David Gatti Audio.

My unit apartment is small and even if I manage to move to a bigger place, I won't be able to have ceiling speakers which from what I heard from the experts ( I have watched video after video about AVR), those ground based speakers facing the ceiling are a somewhat scam because each house will have different furniture, different wall and ceiling structure changing the way how the audio travels so.

With all of that being said, this AVR appears to be a good start for me, the only remaining topic is speakers: front, center and rear.
Any help or recommendation is welcome.

    Thank you very much

This is going to give you trouble with the neighbours if you share any walls! Above, below, sideways and every which way lol. Good speakers last for decades. You might be better off looking for second hand ones. Can end up getting amazing quality brands like Dali, Klipsch, etc. For so much cheaper than retail, with no loss in performance or clarity.

I've had the directional up facing speakers. They can sound great and really give you the atmos effect from above. Other times not so much, its really only the sound mix on the disc and your ceiling height, which is the issue. Most of the time the sound editors are lazy and barely do anything with the height channels for blurays. You need the upfacing speakers on top of your tallboy fronts with a short ceiling in your home. Adjust the individual speaker volume much higher for the atmos speakers. That way the sound carries to the ceiling and bounces off with enough volume to reflect back down. I remember watching a scene from Power Rangers and Ready Player One with the upfacing height speakers and looked up at the ceiling, thinking someone was actually on my roof smashing it lol.

I recommend getting a massive centre speaker. Even getting one thats different from your other speakers if need be, as ones that come in packages are usually not the quality you would want. Its the workhorse of the lot and will do 80% of the output. Most centre speakers are downsized dramatically to fit in TV stands. When they need to be as big as possible. This is the single biggest mistake most people make when building a surround system, settling for an average centre speaker. Even in theatres, behind the screen is 3 massive speakers all the same size, Left, Centre and Right.

All this might be a mute point, as after you watch the first movie with a good setup. The neighbours will complain and you won't be able to use the system anymore lol

Awesome, I am buying it hahaha
Yeah, the speakers are a whole pandora's box on their own.
Also, since I have a server rack with my QLED one connect box and the 4k bluray, I will build a 12v dedicated Noctua cooling system to keep things quiet and cooled.

Some sources say this so as long as I buy the speakers respecting that I should be fine:

        Power Output
        145W per Channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, THD 1%, 1 ch)
        120W per Channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.7%, 2 ch)
        80W per Channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz – 20 kHz, 0.08%, 2 ch)

Always best to listen to speakers…

But the 30i range of q acoustics is on sale now for a great price. I would encourage you to go tower speakers in the first instance for the fronts and just work down from there. I personally really wanted the 3030i for my fronts but did not have the room so went the 3010i

      • Allright I grabbed the 3020i and 3090ci with the AVR-X1800H. More money then I was expecting to spend when I looked into Home Theatre gear a few days ago but ah well. Merry Christmas me haha

Got mine for $675 from the GoodGuys at the beginning of this year, I'll hold and look for a similar if not better deal on the X1800H in early 2025.

    • That was a pricing error.

      • I know, and they did honour that price for a lot of customers, myself included. That's why I think it may be possible for that price again during a genuine sale in early 2025, when it is superseded by a new 2025 model.

  • I'm trying to decide between this and waiting a bit for the Pioneer VSXLX305 to go on sale. Will be used for a 5.1.2 setup but the pioneer has DIRAC and IMAX enhanced..
