Liverpool City Council are participating in a trial, run by the EPA. Council is currently accepting at the CRC items such as vapes, electric toothbrushes, and other small handheld electricals with built-in batteries. Also included are power-banks and electric bikes, scooters and hover boards with non-removable batteries. Never put items with built-in batteries into domestic waste bins, as these items are dangerous when being collected and can cause fires.

    • I thought those battery recycle boxes in Bunnings, Woolies etc. don't take powerbanks?

Anywhere that takes batteries, just drop it off.

    Officeworks or battery world.

*Apparently Officeworks stopped taking them this year

    • Yes. I was able to give powerbanks for disposal to Battery World in Melbourne.

      • They really should update their website because all it mentions is recycling car batteries. Might call my local store to see if they do the same in Sydney.

    • Just called my local Battery World and they don't recycle powerbanks, they only take in old car batteries.

Is there a fine for just dumping this in the bin? I saw some on the side of the road, not sure if they still work?

  • Parramatta Council just got me to book an electronics trash pickup (free) for a ballooned powerbank. I put it outside the night before because I would be gone the following day and someone grabbed it in the night, so I hope they enjoyed their liable to explode at any time powerbank….

So many devices with Lithium ion batteries getting sold and hardly any places to dispose of them safely. Retailers should be made responsible to do it otherwise they should not be allowed to sell them.

Properly recycling lithium batteries is vital, otherwise people will just throw them in the bin. When the garbage truck compacts a load there is a significant chance of the battery being crushed and catching fire.

I just use my recycle bin.

    • I like to put rental escooters in bins too

      • We just throw those in the Yarra.
