  • Erh, Get the Kobi at this price, colour is amazing.

    • I've only ever used Kindles, I wasn't aware of the Kobo Colour. Have you used it and can you compare to a Kindle?

      • Moved from and older Paperwhite, maybe 8th gen.

Have a quick look at the reviews, I was sold by using Overdrive with the Librarys.

    • Been ootl for readers for many years, last one was a Sony PRS-T1 - what’s the go to these days between kobo and kindle?

you really need to look at them yourself in person.

Kobo, Amazon, BigMe, Remarkable, and even TCL NXTPaper are all on the charm offensive lately,( well I reckon they're paying big $'s to reviewers) and there's so many media stories, blog posts, forum posts about how "Ive been using X product for so many days/weeks and it's hands down the best eink reader they're ever used" and also as many slagging off the competition. It's been a long time since I've seen such a massive disparity in views (& conflicting ones) of a tech product. Reminds me of cars in the 80's & 90's.

But if you're stepping up from a Sony, they'll all seem amazing.

        • Yeah it’s hard these days with such conflicting reviews. I used to read a lot in my teens and 20s, these days in my 30s I honestly could not tell you what was the last serious piece of literature I read - want to turn that around though.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: I'm guessing any of the big 3 will do (Kindle/kobo/bihme). don't fall for the cheap knock offs claiming to get eink, they're actually Android tablets with a lcd screen.

what are you going to get books from? As mentioned below, Kobo can use Overdrive to read eBooks from public libraries. I haven't tried it myself as we only have kindles. But my kindle magically makes books appear.

What it comes down to is they all use eink. Colour is something expensive and new at the cost of well price and speed.

The newest kindles give you best in class contrast, screen quality and user experience using the amazon store, at the cost of having external integrations like overdrice, goodread and others which are pretty good.

A kobo functions pretty much as an android device so you get more options for tweaking or doing external stuff with it.

As with every other product, the Chinese options are very competitive now and it's not just Kindle vs Kobo.

I own both a Kindle and Kobo, but the device I use most is a no-name ereader from AliExpress:
        https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/06/review-moaan-inkpalm-plus…

It's shaped like a phone so I just chuck it in my pocket and read during the little bits of spare time I can get. The traditional Kindle/Kobo shape is just too awkward to carry every day unless you always carry a bag.

The contrast on these is much better.

Can you still load your own books from other sources onto the latest kindles?

      use the software calibre

      • Yep or the send to kindle app

        • i think emailing also still works, but it needs to be epub I believe
