What Lawn Mower to Upgrade from Basic 18V Ryobi?

I got the basic 18v Ryobi lawn mower from the garden pack last year: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-one-18v-4-0ah-33cm-cordles…

It's been really frustrating to use. I mow maybe every 3 weeks and it continually struggles with my 2 strips of lawn. I have to continually start it and it takes hours to do my lawn strips.

I want to upgrade but I have no idea what to do.

I could upgrade to a brushless 18v Ryobi and re-use my batteries from the garden pack. But I really hope it's not gonna suck.

Or upgrade to a 36v Ryobi which I don't have any other 36v ryobi tools so the battery would be only for the mower.

Or just go EGO which I heard it's good, but once the battery is dead they are so expensive to buy. I could trade in my current Ryobi for $100 with their current promotion.

Or go classic petrol, but not sure if I'm comfortable servicing and getting fuel for it.

Is there any advice for what type of lawn mower to buy for my needs?

36v Ryobi is much more powerful than the 18v variety.

I also have some 18V tools and didn't want to have a mix of 18V and 36V batteries and chargers, so I went for the large Ryobi mower that takes 2x 18v batteries. It's worked out great for me because I have quite a bit of lawn to mow and the larger mower makes it pretty quick and easy.

    • Sounds like they only have a tiny lawn so they probably don't need the self propelled one. They could get https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-hp-40cm-lawn-mower… which is also brushless and holds 2 batteries but costs about $250 less or if they want another battery the same one in a kit for $100 less than the self propelled though the self propelled has a wider cut.

I have this one and do an old style "1/4 acre" block but then I never had an issue with the brushed model I had before it either. At this point the number of people that have trouble with these mowers I think a lot of it is user error.

Go Ego bro, you wont regret
Battery is not an issue, plenty generic brand to choose on ebay

    • So I shouldn’t spend $350 for a 10ah battery?

I have to continually start it

Do you mean it is jamming/stalling from lack of torque?
I have a 36V Ozito, a bit slower than my old petrol mower, as narrower cut, but so much lighter it makes mowing more pleasant. And I can get the kids to do it!

    • Yeah the blades jam with grass and the grass doesn’t go in the catcher even though it’s not full.

      • It could be the lawn, itself. Got any images pre-mowing it?

If you're already in the Ryobi ecosystem, then their 2 x 18V mowers will do a much better job than the 1 x 18V.

FWIW, if you only have a small lawn, you might be mowing too infrequently. Try raising the mower and doing a single pass first, then lower it, and do another pass. Then mow more frequently rather than letting the grass get super long, it actually saves you time in the long run because each mow is much faster.

This. If youre taking ages to do the lawn every 3 weeks or so, try doing it weekly - before it gets long. You might find that you spend less time overall by mowing it more often.

My Ryobi 36v seems pretty ordinary at filling the catcher too, I have to stop and clear the chute often. it's worse when the grass is longer.

    • This… 2x18v ryobi if they have one… I have the ozito 2x18v and it mows well… plus I can use the 18v batteries on tools… I didn’t want to get into the 1x36v platform as I don’t have any tools that take 36v batteries

I have an older version of this mower

  • Don't bother with 36v, it struggles with my lawn too and my first battery died after 3 years, perfectly outside the warranty period. Should've just got a petrol.

    • Ours runs great still after 8 years. We bought 2 new batteries, but old ones still work (just not as long).
Trick is to mow regularly, and not too short.

After comparing all the Ryobi 18v and 36v options, last year I bought:

    https://www.ryobi.com.au/products/push-mowers/18v-one-hptm-b…

I wanted to change my lawn mowing habit from dragging the mower from the back shed to the front lawn (approx 130m2) once every three weeks and filling the bin, to mowing every three-four days, leaving the clippings on the lawn.

I am using the theory 'if it looks long enough to cut, I've left it too long to cut'

    Best buy ever!

Nice and compact, so it lives in the garage, and the battery that comes with it allows me to use the whipper snipper, leaf blower, and the new mower, with plenty of charge left over. I have used a second battery at the same time – I don't know if it's suppose to give it more power, or just longer power?? But I have never needed it for longer power.

I use mulch setting 2, leave the mulch plug in, and go for a nice walk around the lawn. Quieter and lighter to push around, but heavy enough to trim the grass to a good level. Only bogged once when the grass was wet, but otherwise not a problem.

  • Ego. It's what people who own one recommend.

    • Ego not needed for 2 strips of lawn.

Ego, is not a dirty word

      • True, op could chose an inferior product if they want.

        • Right tool for the right job. You dont need an expensive high powered mower for a tiny lawn.

I havent used an ego mower, but fairly sure it would be better than my ryobi. Would i like an ego lower to make my lawn mowing easier? Might be nice, but cant justify the upgrade when the ryobi does the job.

  • Try lfting the deck sounds like you are scalping the lawn and it will die, mow it more regularly with the deck lifted a littleI have the same mower a bigger lawn area and i manage to mow it using the one battery and time to spare.
I have kikuye grass and yes if its spongy it will struggle which is annoying but it hardly happens now.
