Strange Refund from Bupa

Received an email from Bupa last week:
"We have recently reviewed your Bupa Health Insurance Policy and found that you have paid more premiums than our policy permits. To resolve this, we have issued you a refund."
Got the money yesterday.

Dont get me wrong, I am not complaining. But wonder why/how this happened?
I paid via auto-renewal (Direct Debit) and Bupa sets the amount.

I realise they have this "Covid GiveBack". But their email doesnt have these words…..

Please help me to sort out the mystery…
(No, I havent contacted Bupa yet, not sure if I would. It's more fun to talk to this great OzB group)

An internal audit has highlighted the fact that they have been overcharging you. To avoid trouble with future external auditors they are refunding you and playing down the fact that their systems are useless.

How much was it? I had a similar issue with an racv boat insurance policy. I was refunded $19. I was disappointed to be honest.

    • Wow, is that so?
My premium is under $1k, so it works out to be just under 30%.
      Quite substantial I'd say.

  • Legit refunds. Most corporations will go through internal audits and refund customers.

I got this with HCF, Optus mobile phone insurance and CBA. Makes you think if overcharging is the norm since I keep getting correctional refunds

    • Wow, CBA! How much was that?

      • I got a whole 1 cent refund for being overcharged on a home loan interest with CBA lmao

  • Did you use a 3D printed gun to get the refund? Asking for a friend.

    • This is the first reference of yours I haven't understood. I'm out of the loop. Link please?

Doesn't seem strange, they overcharged you, so refunded you.

From time to time, as strange as it may sound, Bupa returns some of premiums back to the members when the claim payouts are nowhere near as high as expected.
