Purchased an Apple Watch from Optus, but No Longer Need It. What Are My Options? (Resolved)

I got an Apple Watch Series 10 on a plan with Optus, but I have literally opened it and used it once and realised it's not something I need and actually want as I was more in love with the idea of the Apple Watch.

Optus apparently don't do grace periods to return items as it has been opened, so what are my options now? I could sell it and pay off the plan, but eBay's fees are ridiculous. Any help would be appreciated.

Marketplace at a reasonable price and it will sell in no time. Pardon the pun.

Your only real option here is to sell it mate, I would try FB marketplace but be prepared to wait a bit to get a good price for it. I’d say apple products are more sought after than others so won’t be too hard for you to sell but you will make a loss.

Only problem is they are worth $859 at the moment and I have $830 to pay off on the plan so I honestly wouldn’t sell it for anything less than $800.

Looks like you'll be keeping it then.

      • +7

It's not brand new you used it.

        At best you'll get <$700.

      • +6

You could buy it brand new on sale a few days ago for $789 or even slightly cheaper from Apple with 10% gift cards. There is no way someone is buying it used for $800 unless you find a fool.

        • The only way would be with an eBay 0% VFVF promo that coincided with a significant buyer promo.

      • +4

        That's not how it works.

        sigh

No one is paying $800 for a 2nd hand watch when for $59 more than can buy it new.

      • +5

Unfortunately the price you want to sell it for is irrelevant, what matters is the price others are willing to pay for it.

It's only going to go down in value over time, sell it for whatever you can get and be done with it. Last thing you want is to still be hanging onto it in a month because you won't accept under $800.

OP certainly doesn't like the replies here LOL

But the price 2nd hand is what the market will pay, not what you want. No one is paying $60 less than brand new on a $800+ item!

        • +4

Yeah lots of delusional seller thinking oh i paid xx so i must sell xx less 10% without checking now the price brand new is xx less 25%

      • It’s not brand new, it’s used.

You’ll be taking a loss no matter what. You can either sell at the currrent market price and minimize that loss, or you can stick your head in the sand and increase that loss. In all likelihood the watch is worth more today than it will be on any future day you own it.

It appears you have the 46mm + cellular variety. Over the last couple months these have sold on eBay for as high as $849 (though you would incur fees). Marketplace could net you a better price, but be patient, Apple products attract a lot of time wasters.

wait a bit to get a good price

      Or..
Wait too long and new model comes out and the offers will be less…

      Your choice.

    facebook marketplace - cash only.

What if someone offer double price (pay by paypal), as a birthday gift to his son in ocean oil rig ?

  • Put it in a drawer and forget about it

  • +4

throwing it out is an option.

This is your life now….. Options are

Sell it and pay off the plan.

Give it away as a xmas gift

Put it in the cupboard, forget about it till its 5 years old and worthless, toss it out. (ewaste of course).

    • Who gives out $800 Xmas gifts?

      • +1

Someone who make $800 an hour working as CEO.
Happened to me someone from gumtree bought $500 rare lego from me, for his son (10yo) Xmas gift. Go figure.

      • Michael Scott does, but he's just a super nice guy.

      • +1

        To parents/ partner/ kids?

      • Who gives out $800 Xmas gifts?

Then put it in the cupboard for 5 years if you don't want to gift it or sell it.

But some might gift it to a partner for example or even a parent.

Just use it and enjoy. No need to second guess all your decisions.

  • +3

    Wow

  • +3

Thats why never get a plan.
If you want something and cant afford pay full then probably you shouldn't get it. Think of rainy days. No job. Sick. Lots other important things than a $800 smart watch

    • +2

Can’t really complain about the cost of living when you’ve got $800 to waste on a toy watch.

    • IMO the only time to get it on a plan with a telco is if you can somehow get work to pay for it or subsidise

      • +3

Try eBay , costly to sell but it's a option . Also remember, whatever you get for it is better than it lying around collecting dust .

I am simply asking a question and thought I would get more than one or two helpful answers but I guess that’s my fault.

You got helpful answers, they are just not what you wanted to hear.

There is no magic way to return your purchase now you have opened it.

You can only really sell it if you don't want to keep it. So for me to buy it, I would only pay 80% of its value 2nd hand, so around $700. But again, things you don't want to hear, so I guess more unhelpful advice.

          Turns out there is.

What other "helpful answers" were you expecting to get other than selling it?

        • +2

Something like this at a guess….

Hi, I hope this reply finds you well. I suggest you post it on {insert website here}. They charge zero fees and have over 5000 enthusiastic apple watch buyers waiting for your listing. You can expect to sell it for $1100 which will allow you to pay off your current debt and also make a tidy profit. Have a great day. All my love {insert ozbargain username here}.

Optus apparently don't do grace periods to return items as it has been opened

    No retailer does.

    they are worth $859

Gees, what were you intending to use the watch for?

If I were to drop that much on a watch, I possible would consider a Fenix or Epix but I would use it for its sporting features.

    • Actually Apple does. They have a 14 day return policy no questions asked, including opened and worn.

If you buy it over Christmas they even do extended returns until mid January if you get a present you don’t like / need.

      • Wow, interesting marketing strategy - sell for premium price and take risk away from customers.

      • Actually Apple does. They have a 14 day return policy no questions asked, including opened and worn.

Apple does, but that is a Apple store policy, it doesn't apply to Apple products sold elsewhere.

        • I’m aware, I’m purely rebutting the ‘no retailer’ has grace periods.

OP is shit out of luck.

          • @Pelicannn:

Agreed, OP is out of luck for a return!

      Why keep it if…..

it's not something I need and actually want

      I'm confused.

first and last question I ask on ozbargain though.

No it's not. Technically it's your second question.

      • -4

        No it didn’t.

    • +5

Not sure what you were expecting. People gave you useful options and ideas, and you proceeded to ignore them or say they're unhelpful because you don't want to lose money.

You made a mistake but are trying to project that onto others as being unhelpful instead of accepting reality, sucking it up and moving on.

    • +4

People are trying to help you, the first two posts answered your question with marketplace. Everyone else chimed in with a lesson in economics and sunk costs.

If you prefer a watch you don’t want over ~$600, that’s fine. Don’t be surprised that other people are amused by that.
