Sora Was Disappointing

did anyone think the open AI youtube video showing release version Sora was extremely disappointing?? šŸ˜‚

I mean when it was announced and the preview was like, ok this might actually be ok when it's released.

but the release version is basically the same quality. tbh when I saw the preview I thought the quality was terrible. so obviously generated. the only thing cool was like flying through places and warping from a building to under the sea. which is just typical quirky AI stuff.

it's only going to be used to make more horrific gordon ramsay videos.

china's open source one is actually impressive. apparently takes 80Gigs to run it properly though. -it's Hailou AI I think.

wait a second it says Hailou is made by Minimax based in china. I thought Minimax was another also impressive (2nd to Hailou and much better than Sora) AI video generator but it was based in korea?

this timeline sucks. Optus released their own fragrance Fight Fight with the ad showing him talking to Joeā€™s wife Jill on the side. there is already a AI video of them scrapping based on that photo.

we better start building giant pyramids and fill them with important stuff to warn the future ā€œpeopleā€ of the impending inverted spirituality. wait a minute.. šŸ¤”

Sora is OK but i think 105 is worth the money.

    • +1

I used to say that, but current gen Sora is yesterdays 105. It hits the sweet spot. Unless you race, and are willing to spend lots for incremental gains.

      • +1

Today's 105 is Di2 for the people though!

is there a reason you always respond sounding so unenthusiastic on my posts?? šŸ˜‚

I dunno I thought you were like yikes on my comment about being in denial about life. but seems like you arenā€™t so convinced yourself.

I was watching a movie on Disney plus right now btw where this giant wart on a womanā€™s stomach grows into the head of a mutated baby and starts talking to her. I can watch almost anything but I had to turn it off. šŸ˜

look fyi brendanm I have no grudge against you if you think that.

usually I donā€™t recognise usernames if you commented once in awhile I wouldnā€™t associate your username with anything, but just noticed you do engage with a lot of my posts or comments. not saying thatā€™s bad but seems like I upset you somehow or you think I am annoying you intentionally?

I actually vaguely remember I think it was you who suggested to me not to visit r/Australia because it was filled with single minded progressive? well something political people. that they all try to convince you of something and that it was a terrible place filled with terrible people. but I visited it after you suggested and maybe Iā€™m naive and not enough into politics but what I saw was just normal Australians posting a photo of a bird or a bug in their room asking what it was or discussing rent, news articles. not sure why you thought it was such a bad place. but I didnā€™t join anyway.
maybe perhaps it is you who is thinking there are these situations between you and other users there, that you thought it was extremely political? I donā€™t know.

R/Australia is a shit hole of a sub tbf

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: well, so long as you like people having no idea about economics but claiming they do, being vehemently anti immigration but claiming its for economic reasons (despite having no understanding of economics), and whinging about housing prices and claiming its everyone else's fault, its a great place t be.

            • +1

@dtc: I know! Those uneducated fools who imagine some link between house prices and rapid population growth, when they don't even have a Ph.D. in macroeconomics.

Actually, I think you are confusing r/Australia with another similarly named sub. You'd fit right in on r/Australia, where such sanctimony is welcomed. You may even make the moderation team - then you can purge the sub of anyone who questions the group orthodoxy. (unless you were being sarcastic. i can't tell anymore.)

              • @bargaino: where in my comment did I link immigration to house prices or say that it wasnt linked?

the level of economic/financial knowledge on r/australia is embarrassing.

apparently reading comprehension is also limited on this forum.

                • @dtc: Well, it was more of a rant than a coherent argument, so I had to join the dots. If you say they are arguing over high immigration rates on economics, the #1 issue would be house prices on reddit, which you mention in the same sentence. Pardon me for making the link.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: ok fair enough. if you are able to see that the same way brendan is. maybe it's just another thing I go through life not seeing. there are quite a few of those I don't know why.

I think brendan did mention "it was lucky" that I couldn't see the badness in that subreddit. and honestly I couldn't.
maybe it was a good thing I didn't join then, because maybe it would be a dangerous place for someone like me.

      • is there a reason you always respond sounding so unenthusiastic on my posts?? šŸ˜‚

No offense but, not only did I not see who the OP was, I don't know who you are. Perhaps you just have bad takes if that's how I always respond.

I dunno I thought you were like yikes on my comment about being in denial about life. but seems like you arenā€™t so convinced yourself.

Again, no idea what you are talking about, I'm also unsure how my disdain for AI says anything about how sure I am about my life.

        • Perhaps you just have bad takes if that's how I always respond.

yes well might very well be just my vibe on your last few comments, but you seemed to be quite unenthusiastic and kind of down. so I thought you had started going through something. well good to know we are just both strangers to each other and nothing obsessive is going on I guess. šŸ’ā€ā™€ļø

Again, no idea what you are talking about, I'm also unsure how my disdain for AI says anything about how sure I am about my life.

compared to most of your previous responses, again you seemed down or bummed out about being here (thought maybe you thought I was ruining the ozb experience?).

          • @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: I find the talk of AI annoying. I don't wish to devote much time to it. The fact that people are actually relying on it is kind of depressing I suppose.

    • We are in the gold rush phase where everyone thinks theyā€™ve got the one killer idea. Same like the late 90s with the Internet boom, every business was a .com something. Most AI startups will go bust in a few years and then the actual good times will begin. Iā€™m waiting …

      • It's all absolute slop.

      • The gold rush metaphor worked better back then, when you could be first with an idea, and get rich selling to investors.

But now, where are the small prospectors? It is more like the industry decades later, where it belongs to the big mining companies, because big investments are needed for deep mines.

Yes, the potential is mind-boggling in AI, but not many people seem to be finding good ways to monetise it yet. One of the most obvious ways is self-driving cars/trucks/buses. But it remains elusive, despite all the billions spent.
We will get there, but it ain't like the dot-com days, when you could build a multi-million dollar business overnight.

        • The gold rush metaphor worked better back then, when you could be first with an idea, and get rich selling to investors.

What exactly are all the smaller AI companies doing now then? Bigger ones like OpenAI and Google will survive in the long run. However plenty of startups around the world with sky-high valuations for trivial apps are exactly the same thing. When the dust settles, most of the small companies will go bust. The big ones will survive.

We will get there, but it ain't like the dot-com days, when you could build a multi-million dollar business overnight.

multi-million dollars, sure but only in valuation, not revenue. Like webvan.com and pets.com. No different now.

          • @soan papdi:

plenty of startups around the world with sky-high valuations for trivial apps

Hmmm … I probably have not being paying attention then. Google is showing lists of startups with a few million in seed funding. But VC funding data is not impressive.
There was a mini-boom in 2021/2022, but it has dropped right down. Nothing remotely like the turn of the millenium.

            https://www.junipersquare.com/blog/vc-q3-2024

I heard about one local startup, but from people established in their business with deep pockets. AI needs lots of data, which costs money.

        • what you mean finding good way to monetise it yet? openai revenue is in the billions.
there are some chatgpt wrappers that makes millions.

          • @zoombie:

what you mean finding good way to monetise it yet? openai revenue is in the billions.

OpenAIā€™s operating expenses could amount to $8.5 billion in 2024, according to an estimate by The Information based on anonymous sources. Meanwhile, its annual revenue is shaping up to be around $3.5 billion to $4.5 billion, putting it on course to lose between $4 billion and $5 billion this year.

            source: https://www.deeplearning.ai/the-batch/openai-faces-financialā€¦

Might change in the future but we're not sure when or by how much.

            • @soan papdi: yes, their expense is crazy at the moment.

they are subsidising the initial roll out in order to gain market share, a bit like uber eats giving you $20 to sign up. As the market mature, players dropped off, their model becomes more dominant, you will see their pricing increase. In fact, their chatgpt pro model is costing $200, im guessing this is what the profit level might be. It might be high for individuals but for businesses, $200 is nothing if one employee can gain just 10% increase in productivity.

  • Not sure if you played around with MiniMax but the reason why minimax is better is because the creators uses its image to video generation. They generated the realistic images using Midjourney or some other tools, then feeds it to the engine. But when you use its text to video, minimax is horrible.

    minimax: https://artipixx.com/watch/QNB3byfk

    sora: https://artipixx.com/watch/y9zw5SqI

both are generated using the same prompt. the difference is huge.

      ok didn't know that.
