Tablet - what is the best one for kids aged 8 and 10

I have very little knowledge about tablets, what is the best one and cheap as well for kids to play games and take pictures, would like to connect to internet sometimes so it needs to do that, any advice would be great, thanks

  • Any ipad, they are alot more user friendly than Andriod tablets

Plus some schools are using them in the class room

It's not just the ease of use, the Android tablet ecosystem is severely lacking, and I say that as a Nexus 7 owner. So many quality apps simply aren't there (or aren't tablet optimised) and that goes doubly so for the huge amount of educational/kid stuff on the iOS platform.

    iPad Mini would be ideal.

  • thanks, but have just read the thread that says none left for Christmas, which is OK as it was not really a Christmas present, what should I expect to pay?

  • I would see what they use in class.

My boss' kids use iPad's in class, so his decision for the iPad mini was easy to take.

As good as all kids are with technology, it is worth keeping static technology in what they use at home and school.

  • Ipad for both fun and learning. We give our kid the choice of doing homework or play ipad. The choice is easy. So we load education games on ipad. At age 5, He is none the wiser

Please forgive me for being so blunt, but whilst that may sound all hip & cool in justification land, it just smacks of lazy parenting to me.

    • "at age 5, he is none the wiser"…doesn't sound like the iPad strategy is working! Just kidding. IMO there is a strong place for learning apps for young children on iPads like ABC reading eggs and Study Ladder.

  • sounds like ipad is the best option, but how much is a good price and do I need the latest one, or the ipad two might do if I can get a good price?? what do you think??

    • +1

I'd ignore the iPad 2 entirely. At full RRP, the iPad 2 is still $60 more expensive than the iPad Mini and it has no advantages — its bigger & heavier, it has the same screen resolution (which at 10" means worse quality than the Mini), and it has way inferior cameras. Other than that they're the same CPU/RAM wise etc. The form factor of the iPad mini is a lot more pleasing though.

Personally I'd just put an order down for the 16GB iPad mini and wait the 2 weeks, or see if there was a good deal on iPad 3s now that iPad 4s are out.

How about pen and paper? Kids these days …

ethereal88 always something smart to say! Y don't u keep ur unhelpful opinion yourself!!!!! Yeh go with the ipad, so many things they can use them for. But good luck getting a mini :)

  • +3

Please buy them some puzzles instead! They have whole life left to keep being busy with gadgets and techno stuff

  • +1

Ok do you know where to find good kids puzzles or 3D holgram books that will hold there interest? thanks

    • Any department store.

I would also consider anything with which you can interact with your child in joint attention tasks; like books, board games, etc. IMHO this will be far better for them, developmentally speaking, than just plonking them in front of the newest hip TV replacement for lazy parents…the iPad! ;)

      • I'm not a fan of the iPad, but you post is over the top and offensive.

IMHO this will be far better for them, developmentally speaking

Because I'm sure you've researched this topic in great detail. I'll wait for the nobel announcement.

Ok, so you're also obviously one of these lazy, self-indulgent parents looking to dump their kids off on whatever gadget makes your life easier…sucks when the shoe fits, eh?

Because I'm sure you've researched this topic in great detail.

Well, I have actually…I also work in the field.

I could go into the social, cognitive, linguistic & behavioural implications of appropriate carer/child social interaction during joint play; but I won't waste the time on you. I have no intention of giving you a primer in developmental psychology just because you find commonsense & a best practice based approach 'offensive'…suck it up pal, do your own research.

Frankly, I find your sheer ignorance offensive…

Thanks for quoting sources and papers to back up your claims rather than immaturely throwing insults and jumping to conclusions, it really helps to have confidence in your considered and well argued position.

    • There are some awesome kids books, board games and jigsaw puzzles that can be downloaded for free from the iTunes store.

PS I also leave my kids in the car while I play the pokies.

  • Brand new:
Ease of use - iPad mini / iPad 2
Full functionality - Nexus 7 (cheaper in the long run)

    Second hand:
Best cost - iPad 2 - A lot of people downtalk the iPad 2 but you can pick them up a lot cheaper second hand these days. They run at $429 new so second hand gives you a lot of haggling room. Despite having the same resolution on a larger screen they are a lot nicer to browse pages on than a 7" device. The mini version is more portable but if its staying at home most of the time its a good contender.

As an indication, I picked up an iPad 3 on Gumtree near new for $350 back when the iPad 4 was announced, an iPad 2 should easily run you under that.

  • thanks DrStinge, I will keep my eye out on ebay or gumtree, especially after Christmas.

  • For 8-10 year old I would not recommend spending more than $150, unless you really want to get them an expensive iPad or android. Just keep in mind it might get outdate fairly fast for them and being so young they may not take good care of it. There are a few places out there selling the cheapy 1s which will do almost everything the expensive 1s do.

    • For 8-10 I would not recommend an electronic device, I've seen so many spoiled kids at that age with an iPad, their social skills evolve around sitting at the dinner table asking Mum and Dad if they can play their iPad games…

They won't just get the educational games, they'll get anything free that is fun and play them for hours…

      • The solution to that is to take it away from them while they're at the dinner table or restrict them to using it when only at school or doing homework etc…Some parents aren't hard enough on their kids. On top of that technology is moving at such a rapid pace that in about 5-10years children around the age of 5 will probably have mobile phones on them, I could be wrong though. It can have it benefits and it's disadvantages.

        • 5-10years children around the age of 5 will probably have mobile phones on them

I hope not. I dont see how kids that age having a mobile phone is necessary. I understand if theyre early teens who need to catch the bus or walk home by themselves, for safety reasons. 5 year olds shouldn't be unsupervised without a trusted adult anyway. I can see kids sitting in circles quietly messaging each other instead of actually talking and playing active games during recess/lunch at school! Here comes generation fatty.

  • ipad mini. coz of apps, ease of use and size

  • ipad2 (used pref) +1 /mini ipad $369 or Nexus7, ive seen the 8gb for around $200 and the 16gb for $220-240

  • I suggest you to go with iPad mini.

  • IPad 4.&

  • don't see a real reason to get an ipad mini,if the TS is after a cheap tablet…
why not getting smth from China like cube30gt for half of the mini price?

  • Note to the OP: please don't let technology take over your parenting and family time. It's quite sad to see a whole family sitting at the dinner table, not talking to each other but fiddling with their iPads and iPhones.

I have a friend whose kids (8-14 years) are unhealthily addicted to their iTouches and start crying/sulking whenever the dad is forced to turn off the ADSL modem whenever it comes to dinner time.

  • wow, thanks for suggestions, am interested in what you think is a good buy for around $150 as you said, they will not take care of it like most kids, they are bound to be a bit rough. What is the TS? They are not kids that have acess to expensive iPhones or iTouches and such, was really thinking of a cheap but good tablet for educational games and such, possibly wifi at MacDonalds so as you have said it doesn't have to be top of the range, just easy to use, thanks

    • You could try the Crayons Kid's Tab
      http://www.crayons.com.au/products/educational-android-table…

Price is $199 and delivery is free. Aussie company I think. Down side is that the tablet is only 800 x 480 screen resolution but kids don't generally care about specifications.

      Other alternatives are:

AINOL Novo 7 series (Starting from $100 to $150)
Pretty much the de-rigeur brand for Ozbargainers.
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/Novo+7

      ICOO D70ProII tablet $90
      http://www.pandawill.com/icoo-icou-d70proii-tablet-pc-7-inch…

      • Wow Scrimshaw admits that androids are not technologically advanced.

        First Suggests

Note to the OP: please don't let technology take over your parenting and family time

        Then says

You could try the Crayons Kid's Tab and Ainol Novo 7 etc

Funny how many of the anti-techology for kids commentary comes from those with interests in Android posts.

Then again I suppose they could be educational, in that they may have to do a lot more to get the thing to work. :)

And with the kids sulking with their ipod touches etc, do you really think that they wouldn't be the same with an android device? Or they wouldn't sulk because they cant get it to work, so they develop other interests?

        Then

Pretty much the de-rigeur brand for Ozbargainers.

Um please give us the stats for this. Like all figures is this based on certain assumptions. Number of posts? Well given that there is always a price variation with Ainol tablets, this will generate more posts, just like Kogan deals where a dollar off next week generates another post (all types of products). Sounds great but without careful evaluation of the data its a hard call to clearly make.

Like all advice, it maybe well meaning, accurate or inaccurate, but may also hide an agenda which isn't disclosed.

Maybe some better advice, is to look into what your child may like. Given its past Christmas present time, drop into a few stores with the child, somehow just pass the technology section and hey see what happens, then maybe find out what their friends have.

Sharing technology ideas with their friends helps them with communication etc. Then maybe their friends De-rigeur will help you decide.

Who knows it may even be a etch a sketch…..

Funny how many of the anti-techology for kids commentary comes from those with interests in Android posts.

I'm not being anti-tech. I merely forewarned that parents shouldn't give a child a tablet and expect that piece of tech to overtake other forms of leisure (e.g physical activity, reading a book, picking up a hobby).
But used correctly, tablets can be educational tools. You [parents] just need to control how much they use it, and what they use it for.

TLDR I am not from the crowd that says "Tech is big no-no for kids".

And with the kids sulking with their ipod touches etc, do you really think that they wouldn't be the same with an android device? Or they wouldn't sulk because they cant get it to work, so they develop other interests?

No, of course not. The iPod touch thing was an example. I'm not suggesting that the choice of software has any correlation with what kids prefer to use as their tablet or smartphone. They're more likely to be influenced by what their peers use (peer pressure) or mass media. Nor am I insinuating that Android tablets were any more easier or more difficult to use by young kids. I'm not here to push my opinions on other people — just offering advice.

Pretty much the de-rigeur brand for Ozbargainers.

That's my fault for using the term wrongly. I mean to suggest that it's the preferred brand that Ozbargainers would recommend for tablets in the budget range.
