adidas Price Jacking

Hi there, I bought some shorts from Adidas in the recent Black Friday sales, they cost $90 after a 50% discount from $180.

When they arrived, they had the original price tag on them, except it was $120.

I like the shorts and am happy with price I paid for them (Plus cashback), but it does leave a sour taste in the mouth that Adidas seem to price jack in order to then provide a so called larger discount.

Just wondering if anyone has had the same experience?

$90 shorts are the real crime here.

    • Lol, yes well they're hiking shorts so a bit more technical than your standard cotton shorts.

        $90 worth of "technology"

For $90 you could have bought 3 or 4 pairs of shorts from the likes of UniQlo, Kmart etc.

  • For $90 I would have expected pants.

  • Pwned…

Nobody on earth believed that RRP …. please tell me no… $180 for a pair of shorts??? I have some swamp forsale.

    • oh I was fully aware they were worth nowhere near that much. However with the cost of $90 and $25 cashback I considered $65 for a pair of hiking shorts to be not unreasonable. I've found the Adidas Terrex gear to be pretty good and robust over the years.

How credulous would you have to be to think that outside of some niche fashion statement that a pair of Adidas shorts would cost $190? (And if you're buying niche fashion stuff, then the price simply is what it is.)

Fancy-pants (and much better made) stuff from Lululemon, which is already silly expensive, is 90-110.

    • I wondered why the resale value is so high. I personally didn't think Lululemon was much better than adidas.

For the run of the mill stuff, have you walked into a store and compared the stuff on the shelves?

A lot of the Adidas stuff feels like plastic- anything basketball or soccer oriented especially.

I know people who work at Lululemon overseas where they do design and logistics (ie not Oz which is probably just retail stores) - they're a seriously decent company to work for, and they are pretty careful about materials selection and design. Adidas just feels like a standard big corporate that does loads of sports ads.

I've also walked into one of their stores with a pair of shorts that started delaminating after a couple of years, but they'd been washed by Nepalese laundry people during a trek (ie literally pounded with rocks). No receipt. They handed me a new pair of shorts.

I don't like their shirts, but their shorts are great.

        • I've only bought them second hand. Maybe I've picked up higher end adidas without realising which would explain the quality being similar.

  • USD?

  • Do the short give extra performance?
