    Tizen? Unlucky

    • +4

I didn't realise it was still a thing. My Samsung uses Tizen, but I bought that when Dick Smith had stores.

    • Don't overly mind Tizen personally

  • +2

    No user reviews at all?

    • +10

Why not be the first? ;)

  • +50

Cheaper than fixing my broken wall 😁

    • +1

      LMAO!

    • +1

      You're a real genius.

  • +1

Yeah and if the remote stops working or you lose it Kogan will tell you to buy a new TV. No such thing as a good deal on a Kogan TV.

    • +18

who needs the kogan remote when you are using this with a shield or google tv to bypass Tizen?
Kogan also stock heaps of spare Kogan TV remotes, do they not specifically stock this one?

      • +1

whats the issue with Tizen ?

        • +2

Lacks the ease of sideloading and community support of Android TV. Samsung always puts cheap n nasty processors and no ram in their own TVs, so they get slow not long after purchase. Since this is a licenced Tizen install, no doubt the processor is even worse.

      • I use an Apple TV as my user interface over the VIDAA system on an Australian Hisense TV.

So yes, those are the solutions to a tizen operated TV too. A better solution is not buy either a Tizen or VIDAA system in the first place. Lesson learned.

        • +3

Honestly would just prefer dumb TV over a smart one any day.

    • +1

I used to own a Kogan TV. And I was able to use a One For All IR universal remote control with it. It was however a bit of a struggle to find the right code. But it still worked.

  • +3

    "Contrast Ratio 1200:1" Yikes!!!

    • what does that mean

      • +15

It has a very narrow contrast ratio.

We know peak brightness is 350 nits, so we can infer that the blacks are more like glowing greys.

It won't look as good in general, but particularly in dark scenes when viewing at night.

For reference, budget TV's these days often have a CR of around 5,000:1, FALD/ mini LED TV's 50,000:1, and OLED TV's infinite.

        • +6

Was momentarily interested in purchasing until you pointed this out, thanks, saved me from blowing ~$1200 and severe disappointment

      • +5

It means they're probably honest about it.

        • +4

Or hoping the general public wont know what it means lol

        • +9

The numbers above are from Rtings.com lab results, not manufacturer claims.

        • +1

Nah it means it's an IPS panel, VA is more common in TVs and naturally has much higher contrast.

    • Yeah I can't imagine that being great for a TV, odd seeing so many budget TVs using IPS panels nowadays. Worst case the glow would be absolutely atrocious on dark scenes, or black bars good god can you imagine

  • +1

Coming with built-in Samsung TV Plus and Samsung App Store, would this mean it's a rebranded Samsung?

    • +9

      No, very unlikely.
Earlier this year, Samsung began licensing its Tizen OS so that other manufacturers can use it on their TVs, so having Tizen OS and/or Samsung like remote controls is not an indication of them being rebranded products.

      https://www.kedglobal.com/tech,-media-telecom/newsView/ked20….

I looked into this when ALDI began advertising their own Tizen OS enabled TVs thinking the same as you, that they were simply rebranded Samsung models.
I also came across a forum post on Whirlpool from someone working for ALDI's TV manufacturer, who explained the ALDI TVs were essentially "Frankenstein" TVs, built with whatever parts that they could assemble at the cheapest cost, and not a rebranded Samsung. I imagine the same thing is happening here with Kogan.

      • Thanks, good to know

      • Reckon you could link the WP discussion?

  • best use case for this might be using it in the home gym for connecting up one of those exercise apps to display a picture of France, cause you want to cycle there. :D

If you ignore the specs and stop going full nerd on every detail, just looking at any 80+ inch TV, for 90% of the people, it will look amazing and the 86" size makes it feel very cinematic. Like projectors which can't match the contrast, brightness, colour reproduction of even basic TV's but that huuuge 100" - 130" screen size pretty much makes up for all those 'lesser' geek specs. Don't go full nerd on the specs, the TV will be amazing at 86". What I would worry more about is the power draw and warranty. I am used to my Sony, Panasonic Made in Japan TV's to last 20+ years and be fully functioning, I wouldn't expect that from brands like Samsung, LG let alone Kogan but if this lasts 7 years, 86 damn inches and $1200, it is a very good price.

"the guy is a walking red flag!"

      @Dollar Dreamer : "he 6'5 tho"

      • +1

My grandmother fell victim to this. When she asked me to install I immediately knew it was a scam. I told her to get a refund but they refused. She spent 90 USD for a 3 pack.

    • Problem with buying this - or any double bed sized TV for that matter - is what you do with it when it finally dies. Have to hope that happens some time near to kerbside collection.

      • +1

someone will take it within hours if you live in any area that isn't devoid of people and traffic.

        • Legit? Is there recoverable wire etc that makes it worth their while?

    • +1

No IPS panel is "cinematic". Not to mention how inaccurate the colours are going to be on this thing.

If you want a cheap and cheerful 85" TV grab the cheapest thing in the Sony eBay store. Or alternatively a TCL.

      • +3

You are a nerd and one of those spec dweebs. Nothing wrong with that. Most of us are nerds on Ozbargain. Change your setting from Vivid and also switch off motion compensation. It will get close. Advice from 1 spec dweeb to another, just don't over dweeb it. I can feel a nose bleed coming, you ok?

  • +9

These cheap big TVs are always bashed for not matching the specs of higher priced models, as most people are missing the point.

The people buying these just want to watch the footy/fights with their mates on a big screen etc. Half the time I've seen these mounted outside, somewhere you wouldn't put a nice TV. Or just folks who can't afford the latest tech, but are happy trading off features for inches.

edit: these would make for great advertising in retail shops, too.

    • +3

100%, my Kogan black friday TV just got delivered. Has the 'smart' functinoality so I can stream whole heap of stuff. Yeah it may not have the blackest blacks, or the vividest colours or the brightest screens… but honestly my eyesight is bad enough that it looks good and can watch the cricket on it.

      Cannot complain for the price.

  • Go for this or wait for Boxing Day deals on a LG or Samsung? Use case it just for watching sports video feeds in an office, don't care about OLED particularly

    • +1

I reckon spring for this one. Samsung 86 will not be this cheap I doubt it.

    • Also look at TCL

      • Yep ended up getting the LG 86 with the JB deal.

  • +1

How on earth does this 86-inch TV weigh only 27.9 kg, while my 2021 Samsung 85-inch TV weighs a hefty 46 kg? It's so heavy that accessing the HDMI eARC port is a real struggle, especially since it's mounted in a recessed wall!
Same size, half weight? 1/3 price?

    • Maybe the backlight techMOLOGY has improved in the meantime?

    • -2

      It's made of cheese.

  • +4

I'm all for bagging Kogan BUT give them credit, they state the CPU(kind of) and GPU in the TV, which is something 99% of makers do not do.

    • I think they're relying on not many people realising just how slow an A53 + G52 combo will be.

      • Atleast they're stating what is used though - very few do that and the ones that do often use their own company names for the units, so no real idea how they perform vs real world known options.

Again is a small positive - I'd still not buy Kogan myself but they have a place in the market.

  • +2

Say NOOOO to Kogan TVs people.

  • Probably an MT8168 processor which is quite a few years old now. Not sure how slow it'll feel…

    • Molasses on a cold morning sounds about right to me….

  • Wouldn't this Hisense be a better option instead for $1499?

Just received email a LG 86" UT8050, is on sale at JBhifi.
For 1495, but also has a perks member 10% discount in the email. So comes to about 1350.

Ive had nothing but good service from kogan.
But for something this big, i prefer to deal with b/m store.
