Outstanding "authentic" (made for export) Czech Pils back in stores after a 3 year hiatus. 500ml @ 4.7% ABV makes it about the best price / quality ratio beer around, more so given it's one of the very few international beers not brewed locally under licence.

Tasting notes:

Praga Pils beer is supple, dryish medium body and a long, refreshing finish. A Gold Medal winner at the World Beer Championships Awards & Bronze Medal Winner at the Australian International Beers Awards 2017. With more than 200 years of Czech brewing heritage this beer is as real as it gets.

First Choice have a bunch of other stuff eligible for 20% off too, but this really stood out.

TAKE20 code works for me in QLD seems TAKE10 might be elsewhere?

Actually not a bad beer. Bought one to try last week and wasnt offended

    • +12

Thought the Gen Zs reserved the right to be offended by anything. For us millennials (assuming by your username) as long as it's cold, she'll be 'right

    • +4

It's my go to now that Asahi shifted production onshore. Closest equivalent would be Hollandia but that's a bit cat piss-ish.

      • Wow have not had Hollandia since I was in my early 20's lol

        • DM sells it in 330ml bottles & 500ml cans. Does the trick when nice & cold but it is what it is.

    • +4

Nice post, needs more double negatives though

      • +3

I wouldn't dare not to agree you've got a point.

      • +3

        You're not incorrect

      • I'm not arguing either way, and I've been wrong before, but my view is not totally dissimilar.

  • +2

Good beer, a bit on the sweeter side for my palette but at this price is a deal!

    • How sweet would you say it is compared to CC (which is extremely sweet for me and I didn’t finish the first can that was offered to me).

      • +3

It's been a while since I've had this beer but I wouldn't say it's especially sweet like something sugary, the flavour profile leans sweet and soft.
Here's a few more opinions of it. https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/303/82287/

        • Read a few reviews quickly, and comes accross as a medium dryish crisp beer with hints of sweetness,

but as always with food and drinks and varying palletes,……..YMMV.

  • +3

Solid beer and noting it's a box of 500ml - this is a bloody steal, thanks OP!

    • +1

At this price, I stole one. Thanks OP lol.

  • +5

I don't mind it either, agree its a bit sweet for me after a while. Prefer Budvar. 500ml value FTW.

    • +3

Agree re: Budvar that stuff is the tits, but hard to find in big boi tinnies and alas never so cheap (except over there!).

  • +1

Code not working for me here in SA

    • TAKE10 is the code

      • +3

Definitely TAKE20 in QLD/Brisbane, on the front page & banner popup. OP updated to confirm this.

  • Invalid promo code - also in SA

    • +2

      Use TAKE10

      • In SA you get sent to liquorland. Take10 (ten bucks off min spend on anything above 20) it’s a promo from their Hydra rebranding.

  • +2

    TAKE10 works

  • Anybody else incorrectly being charged delivery?

Homepage says 'Free express delivery over $99', but in cart, says 'Free express delivery over $199'.

Cart with $100.80 wanting to charge me $10 for delivery…. rude.

    • +1

May need to be ordered during store trading hours according to this page.

  • +2

    Thanks, ordered CnC in QLD.

  • literally the best alcoholics' beer after XXXX Gold

    • +7

That's being a bit unfair to Hammer & Tongs or Henninger!

      • Rivet lol

        • +1

Hey don't knock the Re-vays they're not bad…clean, easy drinking rice based lager. I used to drive to Tweed Heads ALDI from Brisbane to load up 10 cases back in the day.

  • I get, invalid promo code.. WTF

  • Paulaner looks great too.. if only I could get the promo codes to work.

    • +1

Hmm might be limited to certain regions. Have updated the OP with evidence of TAKE20 but try TAKE10, if that doesn't work…might be SOL 🙁

  • +2

TAKE20 working in WA, thanks OP

  • +2

TAKE20 working in Sydney thanks OP!

  • +2

Thanks OP 20% off worked in Melbourne

Czech here. I have never ever seen this beer in Czech. Most likely the only Czech thing about it is the label…
If you want a really good, authentic Czech beer, I would recommend Kozel (lager on the sweeter side) or Pilsner Urquell (more Bitter). Sometimes you can get it in Dan Murphy's.

    • +16

At this price though surely it’s worth Czeching out

      • Use TAKE20 at the czechout

    • +2

Kozel is great. Dan used to sell it.

      • +1

It was great, but Dans wanted $4.50 per bottle back then, can only imagine what it would cost now…

    • +2

My two of the all time favourites, Kozel Dark & Urquell. They are great

    • Looks like its primarily made for export. Not that uncommon where market gaps exist. https://www.pragapils.eu/who-we-are

      • +2

Yeah, not present in Czech pubs at all as far as I am aware (or maybe some obscure or tourist locations). There are better Czech choices but if you like the taste and are happy with this budget beer(their claim) then why not…

    • +2

Fellow Czech here - totally agree with you.

      • Are there a lot of Czech Ozbargainers?

    • +2

This is made at Samson in Ceske Budjovice and given the name Praga to sell internationally . Its strange to me that it was hard to get Samson in Prague, but I could buy Praga last time I was in Alice Springs.

      • Wow, mind blown…I used to drink Samson occasionally when I lived in Europe 20 years ago, it was super cheap from the big box Costco style retailers, never knew the connection to Praga when that showed up here a few years ago.

    • +1

+1 to Kozel. It's my favourite beer and when I found it on tap in Serbia I had to sink a few

    • Also Budvar it is in between Kozel and PU taste wise. I buy cans from Aldi when they are on sale.

  • +1

    Thanks op!

This company makes a good hypercar too: https://pragaglobal.com/

  • +1

Nice deal. Still holding out hope Hoegaarden will one day return.

    • +1

Used to be able to get it on tap at any number of my locals when I lived in the Netherlands 20 years ago…the perfect beer for those long summer evenings.

      • +2

It was the only decent affordable wheat beer here.

    • Can't you still buy Hoegaarden online from several different stores?

      • Have seen it occassionally for crazy prices like $80+. But not seen it since COVID in BWS/LL/FCL/Dans :(

        • +2

I bought a 24 case around this july for 54.99 + delivery at the drink society before, but since then it was out of stock

  • +1

Thanks OP, bought 2. Great for Xmas drinkies, cheers

  • +1

Nice. Thanks OP. Limit of 1 at my store unfortunately.

    • +1

From what I understand they're only allocating 1 carton per store for some reason, as I've have trouble getting it consistently in Brisbane of late. I got 4 with free delivery from this deal so much be being dispatched from a warehouse.

      • +3

Possibly, but in the case of my store, I seem to have bought the last one - lucky!

  • +3

mate if it's doesn't include six different varieties of hops, half a fruit basket, and been through six rounds of dry hopping, is it really beer?

    • Where did you read that ?

      • +1

        It's a bad attempt at a joke.

        • +4

Should I send you my drafts in future to get your approval before posting?

  • +1

    OOS in Sydney

    • You can order for delivery, oos for C&C
My delivery expected on 12th Dec for 2198, which is pretty quick

      • thanks…. didn't want 4 cases of it… nobody seems to be drinking much these days.

  • +1

Wondering how it compares in flavour to my regular go to - Paulaner Münchner Hell (Aldi $16 for 4)
    Obv a lot cheaper!

    • Pretty sure I got the Paulaner Hell's for $14.95 per 4 pack last week at Aldi (Ballina and Lismore).

I like the Paulaner, but bit sweet to drink all the time in summer for me, pretty sure this Praga is

lighter and less sweet ( I hope lol).

      • +1

I agree with the sentiments here that Praga is a bit sweeter, but I find that's more noticeable when it warms up. When it's fresh out of the fridge it's super clean & crisp and not a lot of overt sweetness.

        • +1

Just tried picking up my case, but was denied as mistake in their stock system, Thursday now (am an hour away round trip, so there go the savings lol). Bought a four pack for $14 just to try, and do find it sweeter than most dry, crispy pilsners I tried. It's really leaning towards the Paulaner style a bit all round for my taste, but still nice and in my good range, just not excellent haha. Great for the price though, if you live close by.

          • +1

@ozhunter68: Looks like the stock is all gone in my area too. Thanks for the review.
Paulaner is hard to beat for a lager in my opinion, the first sip you get that wonderful Hallertauer hops aroma that is perfect for summer and to chug it all down relaxing outside in the shade.
Would have loved to try this Czech lager, at such a low price, I will give a 4 pack a go next time I am at bottle shop.
My other go to, which is somewhat more in your face, is Balter XPA, you can find a 4 pack for $16, it's only 375ml but it's a well regarded beer perfect for summer.

            • @Vomo: Haha, I live around Balter country and tried most of those beers, including some awesome (for me) experimental kegs limited release at the Brunswick Heads Hotel. Like the XPA, but the Hazy IPA or IPA even better, but more $ and rarely discounted.

          • +1

@ozhunter68: I supposedly got the last case at my store - their stock system was in error - but they replaced it with Henninger.

  • +2

Ordered one with 20% off c & C in Tweed Heads South, just thought I'd try and see if I could grab a second one

with the code (and if they had stock) and it worked. Will go there and taste one after lunch before ordering a

second though to make sure I like it enough (being Belgian a bit fussy with my beer, but also being Aussie

not always that fussy as long as Real Cold haha).

  • Appears none in Canberra.

  • +1

    Thanks op

  • +1

damn I'm jealous for those with a first choice near them, this is a great price for a lovely tasting beer.

  • The website says Free Express Delivery for orders over $99.
Dodgy… the site doesn't give me that option.

  • Ive only just received delivery of my order earlier today which was placed 2 weeks ago on Tuesday 26/11 - despite it advising estimated delivery would be Thursday 28/11 - in time for the BF weekend.

Ive just ordered a couple of slabs of these today, but I will be very surprised if they are delivered within a week - even though again it says estimated delivery Thursday 12/12 (2 days).
I live in the metro Melbourne catchment area but I still have yet to receive a delivery within a few days of their estimation despite saying to myself that I am never doing this ever again as their delivery process is so unreliable. Unfortunately, the offers are just too good to resist though…

So I am going to try and stay chillaxed… keeping everything crossed that they turn up before Christmas.

    • I rang FCL to ask about a delivery window & was told firstly that the delivery contractor is AusPost (at least for my order), but also that the warehouse is awaiting stock so the "expected by 11 December" note on the order is a total lie, so you are rightly concerned that there will be a delay…at least by Christmas hopefully.

  • Both codes not working

  • Damn my C&C order is now saying out of stock, they are offering to substitute Henninger 24 x 500ml instead.
Haven't had either but was looking forward to trying Praga, is Henninger pretty much as good?

    • +1

Definitely not. Henniger is malted cat piss by comparison.

      • +1

That's disappointing - I ordered early but guess the store didn't reserve it after all. Thanks for posting

  • Unavailable everywhere SE melb I've tried.

  • +1

Walked in and told the lady at the counter I have an order to collect. She barked back "Let me guess, Praga"!

    • Ozbargained!

      That's pure gold.

  • Did jack visit before the discount came out?

    Might of been $40 before
    https://www.grogprices.com.au/product/praga-premium-pils

    • It was never that cheap, even before it went AWOL for 3 years. Pre-covid it was $55-60/slab of the 500ml cans.
