Its unfortunately a tougher decision than you might realise - a lot depends on type of photography, level of interest etc

Kit lenses generally aren't anything special and if you do start taking it more seriously they'll be upgraded to better ones before you know it - which is why I feel if you know it's going to be a longer term interest/hobby then it may be better to get the body only and skip the kit lenses, so that money can be spent on better lenses.

Plus how good photos from phones can be nowadays - depending on the use case sometimes its better to just learn techniques to take better smartphone photos instead of getting a dedicated camera.

    • Was going to say something similar - if she's a beginner, kit lenses are okay. If she already is experienced, camera body only and she can get her own lenses.

    • No matter how much I say it - she wants a dedicated camera

      • Hobbies are for fun, they don't need to be rational or productive. Good luck with your purchase!

    • Indeed, skip the kit lenses and do some research on one or two better alternatives which is where you're headed anyway

    • depending on the use case

Does she have a lot of experience with cameras? Personally I'd go with a used camera and look at the lens ecosystem she wants to get into. Kit lenses are usually slow and subpar, running the risk it's no more interesting to use than an iPhone. It's generally better to have an older camera and good lenses.

IMO the R50 isn't a great choice right now because of the lack of lenses. Canon hasn't made many themselves and you're basically relying on Sigma for fast lenses, which cost more than the equivalent of other brands because they're brand new to market, or buying the full frame ones which are expensive, although good if you want to upgrade to a full frame canon camera later on, where Canon are amazing.

  • Kits lenses are only included as a value added proposition. They are almost always slow (as in aperture), slow to autofocus and the lens elements are just cheap plastic resulting in softer images.

A perfect decent starter lens is something like a 24-70 with a constant aperture like f4. Include a 50mm prime f1.7 and your wife will take much better photos.

If she wants huuuuuge zoom then maybe a legit bridge camera is the way to go. Good zoom lenses beyond 200mm are pretty dang expensive.

This kit comes with the Canon RF-S 18-45mm IS STM f4.5-6.3 and Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM Lens.

    45mm @f6.3 and 210mm @f7.1 is very average best

Kit lenses are usually trash yes, but for the average punter assuming no experience and just want something better than smart phone, it’s quite adequate.

      No they're not.
