GaN Desktop Chargers

Hi everyone,

Currently, every room in my house, has multiple cables on the floor and adapters in power points.

I have devices that use USB A, B and C with their own unique cables and adapters.
In an attempt to tidy up my house a bit, I decided to look for a decent GaN desktop charger with a minimum of 4 USB C and 2 USB A ports.
Every night I am charging a 14" laptop, a Galaxy watch 6, a Samsung Gear 3, a Motorola mobile, and a Galaxy S20.
My S24 only requires charging every 2-3 days.

I have had a few negative experiences with Aliexpress, so I'm steering clear of them.
Last I read, Ugreen, Anker, Belkin and Zyron were the better brands. Unfortunately, Zyron doesn't seem to have a desktop charger in their range.

What can you recommend for $50,- or less? Or do I have to for out more for a reasonable charger?

I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance 😊

Why GaN? Let the engineers worry about the design details. You just need to see the specs of the finished product.

    • Because my bedroom is insanely hot in summer. The last thing I want, is for a charger that heats up too much.
GaN chargers run cooler and therefore last longer. Plus they're smaller in size, so it fits better on my bedside table.

      • They can be. But are you familiar with mosfets? It sounds like you might be taking some marketing claims a bit too seriously.
How many watts difference are you expecting?

        • I guess you don't think it's much of a difference in wattage?
I just really don't want a charger that runs hot. It will be standing on a wooden table right next to my bed.
I'd rather not have a heater in my room, plus I'm worried about the wooden table ending up catching on fire one day :/

          • @Yeah OK: In your case, it makes more sense to look at energy.
Lets say all your devices add up to about 100Wh per day of charging, to be generous. Most being the laptop, and assuming you run it near flat every day.
A GaN transistor can save 8%, so 8Wh per night. Equivalent to 1 watt over 8 hours. Your bedroom probably has multiple devices that use 1W in standby mode.

Over a year, that is less than $1 on your power bill.

The engineers often fight over the details.

      Too much GaN violence.

  • A few dollars cheaper last week https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-Charger-Charging-Station-Ma…, Anker's is roughly the same price when discounted.

    For $50, you'll only get a dodgy https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/882615

    • Yeah, I guess 50 bucks is not going to buy me much.

I might just have to get a 2 USB A and 2 USB C charger for now.
I can get another one, when there's a good deal.
That way I can have 1 in my room for my electronics, and 1 for in my son's room for his electronics.

      • Power board with 2 x smaller chargers?

  • USB type B, what are you using for that?

    • You mean what am I using USB B for? I use it for my torch.

      • What kinda torch?

      • Must be a really chunky torch if it's got a USB B port.

  • No idea about the brand. It was given to me as a Christmas present a few years ago. I think it's just an unbranded cheap China one from eBay or aliexpress.
I'll have a look in the morning to see if there's a brand name on it.

I wonder if this is a good charger. It's an Anker.

  • There is this charger which was heavily promoted here a week ago. Despite it supposedly being a temporary deal, it's still at almost the same price now (so maybe fake RRP?)

I have my doubts about totally unknown 'brands' that cannot even be arsed to spend a handful of dollars to come up with a coherent brand name and have zero technical reviews, but hey, it's got lots of ports.

The most recent post on that thread from someone who received theirs indicates that it runs hot.

Pick one. You cant get both!…

There will be times when you are charging 3 mobile phones and 2 watches at the same time? Might be worth getting 2 x wireless charger that can do a phone and a watch together. That'll only need 2 ports to charge 4 devices (assuming that all devices can be charged that way, looking at you motorola).

What wattage do you need for the 14" laptop?

This is out of stock, but shouldn't be hard to find something similar. Example of what I am using to charge laptop and multiple devices.

I use it with 3 devices plugged in

    Laptop
Wireless charger for Samsung phone/watch/buds I got it for $10USD on a sale
I have an old google home mini that I keep by my bedside

    • I am not sure what wattage the laptop needs. My son has it at school right now.

The Gear3 is for my son, the galaxy watch 6 is mine. I have a private phone S24 and a work phone S20 and then there's my son's Motorola.

I saw that Aliexpress one. But it sounds a little too good to be true lol.
I'll just get 2 separate chargers with less ports. One for my son's room and one for myself. I'll buy 1 now and 1 in January. I only get paid once a month.

I am not sure what wattage the laptop needs.

usually 65W will be good enough

  • Just curious is the battery on s24 alot bigger than s21? I only get 1 day. I wqs thinking replace with s24 ultra or s25 ultra when release

"S24 only requires charging every 2-3 days."

  • It's a lot bigger than my S20, but sure about S21. Maybe someone else can answer that for you.
I guess it depends on battery size, but also how much you use it every day.
I don't use it all day every day. I use it for private calls, texts, maybe a game or 2, check my emails, navigation, etc.
I easily get 2 days out of it. My S20 I'm lucky if I can squeeze 1 day out of it. It needs to be recharged every night, but the battery is probably wearing out too.
