Hi guys, any recommendations for a first pedal bike for a 3.5 year old boy. He’s 105cm tall, and pretty cautious. Wondering to go with 12, 14, or 16”. This will be his first bike.
Any suggestions?

Any recommendations for bike store in Sydney?
Not to be too pedantic but Sydney is pretty big with multiple bike shops and your needs don't seem especially complex. What looks good around where you are?
105cm should be 16 inch according to the 99bikes guide
We went all out with a neo 16 - was it necessary? Probably not. Is it worth the money… again, IMO prob not. My two share the one bike so we are definitely getting our moneys worth out of it - but otherwise if you spend some time in marketplace/scumtree you’ll most likely find some perfect or close to ones for much cheaper than retail.
get on facebook marketplace and have a look there.
kids outgrow their bikes relatively quickly and as Jimothy says "much cheaper than retail".
First Bike for 3.5 Year Old
I no longer have my first bike but it would have been a fair trade for sure.
no need to fork out for kids bikes, take your pick at the next verge collection
If he's cautious, start him on a balance bike - no pedals so he can put his feet on the ground any time he wants.
When he's got his balance and scooting along go to a pedal bike - with training wheels if he needs the confidence.
Above worked for my daughter.
Balance bike came from nature strip and pedal bike was neighbour's hand-me-down :)
We have friends with kids and that is what they did. Get the kid used to the balance before they have to deal with pedals as well.
Yeah I recommend a balance bike and then 2 wheeler.
I just removed the pedals, taped crank arm to stays and lowered the seat. Instant balance bike!
Avoid trainer wheels - they can be useful for small children who lack the strength to ride a bike normally. But are not helpful for learning.
I think this is why the balance bikes became popular. Your method sounds pretty good.
Ozb hack :) Love it :)
Just go and get his favourite themed one from Kmart or Big W for like $99 or so with training wheels. Maybe this Bluey one for $89.
My daughter has a Frozen one that she got when she was 3 I think and she is now 5, doesn't ride it often. Buy a bigger, better and longer lasting bike when they are older and using it more often.
It's their first bike; it'll be trashed like everything they used as a toddler.
Nah, 105cm tall, he is ready for a 16".
Okay, my point still is the same; don't spend a lot. Maybe these bikes will help the OP.
Agreed. I got serious when my kids were old enough for a 20" bike with gears.
At 3 they lack the strength to do much. Might as well get a Kmart bike.
Though we did have a tag-along, for fun family rides:

@bargaino: Couldn't agree more.
Dont get anything with training wheels, they are a bad way to learn how to balance. Start on a balance bike.
Go to the bike store, sit him on a bunch of bikes with training wheels, see which one he feels comfortable with.
