Advice on Getting Yoga 7 2-in-1 (14", Gen 9) AMD for $1319

Hi all,

Looking to buy a laptop for my wife between the $1000-$1500 price range. She will mainly use it for spreadsheets, email office-y type stuff, but I don't want to cheap out and get something slow. Touch screen and drawing capabilities is a must as she does like to take handwritten notes and sometimes likes to draw. 14" screen is what shes looking for with portability and she can connect it up to a 32" screen at home.

Currently she is using her work laptop (shes on maternity leave) but its locked down so she can't install things on it. She sometimes uses my macbook but hates it.

Besides this Lenovo Yoga is there anything else that is recommended? Preferably something new as she wants to keep it for a while. Thank you!

  • Ms surface?

    • I did have a look at the Surface Laptop Go 3 as its about $100 more than the Lenovo, but specs wise I don't know how it compares? It seems like the Lenovo is a better spec item?

  • Officeworks had this for $1197 yesterday
It just jumped up in price but I expect it will drop again.

    • Is there much different between the idea pads and the yogas?

        In general,

        • Yoga has better built quality than IdeaPad
        • The IdeaPad in Officeworks has Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM CPU. It has arguably better battery life, but might have compatibility with some Windows software. However if the usage is mainly web & office applications, then I don't think there's any issue.
        • Cheers Scotty. Do you think I should go with the Yoga as its cheaper at the moment and a better build quality? I'm assuming the battery life on the Yoga should be pretty good too.

@PropertyPig: Sorry I have no idea.

However I did just purchase a Yoga 7i 2-in-1 (Intel version) for my daughter to replace her old ThinkPad, as she wants 32GB RAM for her course work (not available in AMD version of Yoga 7). I will know in 2 weeks when it gets delivered…

  • I've been looking at that deal as well, it's a pretty good deal.

Might be worth seeing what it's like to hold and touch if you can make it down to a store today.

Specs are good, battery will likely be good, don't see any downsides at that price really.

  • Forget that or even all Lenovo.

I bought that a while back, for more with full Lenovo 'on-site' Warranty.

Worst piece of junk ever, multiple issues; heat, memory, keyboard, lag, screen, power cable, slots, Bluetooth, & the list just goes on depending the day, week or month.

Bright side, hinges are still ok…… just until warranty runs out soon then they will break too. Does not make a difference thou…..

Their so called 'on-site' warranty is non existent…. warranty is rubbish.

Lenovo if you are reading…. YOU SUCK!!

    • Oh that doesn't sound great. Did you end up getting a different laptop?

      • The fight goes on.

Battling on with a Arrrghhh $200 HP Chromebook thing.

    • Demand a refund.
You have the right to a product that works correctly for intended use.
I wonder if you got a faulty item or if they are all this bad.

      • The fight goes on.

  • I saw this one for $1688 at harvey norman and it comes with a bonus xbox. I tried price matching it to the same one at Centrecom for $1499 but the live chat wouldn't do it. Anyone had luck doing it in store?

    • Glad I didn’t take the plunge. It’s now $1298 with a $100 HN gift card.

I have the Yoga 7 AMD from 2 generations ago and I'm still enjoying it very much. You can even use it for a spot of gaming as the in-built Radeon iGPU is surprisingly capable. It even runs some AAA titles at 30FPS+ if you keep expectations in check re settings. For example, I regularly play Diablo 4 on this thing which actually blows my mind.

I got this deal recently with Black Friday for a Lenovo Yoga 7 2-in-1 R7-8840HS, 16GB DDR5, 512GB ssd after agonising over what to get. At first was going for surface pro 11 but on researching snapdragon cpu I decided against it. Wanted to be able to do a bit of everything, light gaming, good graphics, good build quality etc and the 2 in 1 style was essential for this purchase.

I must say for $1222 it packs a big punch, seems to be really high spec for the price imo although I’m not fully up to date with the market. The hdmi, usb c 4.0, usb c 3.0 and allowing multiple displays, able to self upgrade ssd, fingerprint, screen quality of the oled is great. I wish it came in 32gb ram but the amd doesn’t in australia. For a laptop that’ll last a good 5 years and not become a dinosaur (hopefully) I reckon it’s up there as being one of the best choices if you really need to draw / touch screen etc.

    • Thank you, thats a great review. I wish i had taken the plunge during black Friday. I might wait til boxing day.
