You can't use it if you have a flyscreen and who doesn't.

    • Why not, my flyscreen didnt have any effect on installation?

  • Re the turntable. Can I connect it to an external amp? With speakers?

    • +2

As per VWestlife video would probably be best to avoid these units, as they aren’t very good at all and may (afaik) damage records. I would personally go on FB to look for a turntable which would need new belts but they may also need a new cartridge, and also require a phono preamp. Perhaps the Audio Technica AT-LP60X which is currently on sale might be a better option as it has a built in phono preamp, although it is much pricier. Perhaps someone with more experience than me could chime in?

      • Awww shucks, this is getting complicated, thanks mate. I will stay away from this one though. It's a gift for my dad, his old one stopped working.

I purchased a 1.9 kW portable air con from Aldi a few years ago and ended up throwing it out. Unless it's for a broom closet, it will do FA to cool your room down.

    • +2

Yeah, even modding it to a two hose system (circulate the hot air) still isnt great as the conversion area is quite small, and the unit itself is sitting in your room getting hot.

Maybe a water cooled jacket…but effort : return ..poor

Sticking the unit entirely outside, and using a hose to blow cold air back in is about your best chance I recon.

      If not, it's $200 ewaste.

    • Perfect for the current rental market

I have a 2kw portable air conditioner. It's VERY noisy. You cannot sleep with this running, and while it drops the temperature a few degrees it's vastly interior to a wall mounted unit.

These things are cheap for a reason.

    • Offcoarse it's interior, otherwise it would be a split system

  • just like the Juice Loosener from the Simpsons , it's whisper quiet.

  • +8

Not sure why I am reading this post but I have to say I am sick of seeing people criticising it without providing solutions.
Of course everyone knows split system and window unit are way better than this but the thing is the renters do not have those options.

      It’s the OzBargain way… unfortunately

  • Got one in different brand of portable a/c before, was not very effective. I don't recomend , unless you have no option.

  • +1

Single hose portable units don't work, they create a negative pressure airflow in the room and causes all the hot air from outside to come in

  • +1

I am with everyone, please DO NOT buy, you need a much more powerful unit to cool any room. These are only good if you can sit a metre or two away in direct air flow

  • +1

I bought a 4.1kw portable inverter AC from Kogan. It can get a 29 degree medium sized bedroom to 18 in about 20 minutes. It absolutely cranks. Sure it's far more expensive at 649 but I'm happy I spent more and bought powerful unit. These portable air-conditioners are not as efficient as they quote on paper.

If you desperately need cooling for your room, I recommend you get something like this 4.7kw Olimpia unit instead. https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/olimpia-splendid-47kw-portabl… I bought one of these 10 years ago for $400 on gumtree secondhand to cool a college room, the compressor was in the room with the pipe going out through the window. My room was icy cold but it was noisy so you need ear plugs to sleep. A 1.5kw unit is probably not powerful enough to cool down a 3mx3m room

    • is the 1199 a good price to pay???

      • do you need extra thing for these to work? like a pipe to outside window?

    • 4.7kW, it will be loud.

  • Wouldn't the Kogan 2kw models be a better buy at $279?

I have two of the Arlec 2.60KW 9000BTU Portable Air Conditioner for two specific rooms of my house. Yes, they are noisy, but they do a bloody good job. Don't use them whilst we are sleeping, but it keeps the room cool throughout the day. I just put headphones on when I have it going in the office. I would rather noise than be bloody hot!

They don't have any issues with moisture or anything. Has a remote and various modes.

Sure, a split system would be lovely, but at around $7k, it requires some savings to achieve.

    • I might be out of the loop but I don't see how 2x split systems can cost $7000.

When I installed mine ~6 months ago costed me $1189 for a Hisense C5.0kW H6.4kW Reverse Cycle Split System itself, and $1342 for installation including wiring, new RCD circuit breaker, extending the outside unit around the corner and onto the ground, and an outdoor weatherproof double power point. All with invoicing. $2531 all up for one.

If I got the 2nd one installed, installation costs wouldn't be that much extra.

My neighbour got two big units installed (unsure of size but for a 4 bedroom 2 living home), and it was $7k supplied and installed.

I got quoted $6.8k for decor of the heater and installation of a split system for my house, and that was after the rebate.

        • Hmmm, seems expensive. I guess construction type and location can affect costings.

I'm in the Bankstown (NSW) area. The house is a single story, brick veneer. No rebate/government discount either.

The installation should have costed even more than usual with ~5 meters of extra copper tubing to extend the AC outside units around the corner and onto the floor.

The aircon I bought had good efficiency too, not just the cheapest one like if it were supplied from the installer.

Would not recommend, if you can't afford a split system get a reverse cycle one of these and run it on heat outside and it will blow cool hair in. Way more quiet and efficient.

  • ive had a stirling, amazing ac, hardly any condensation unlike a kogan ive used which was producing 2L a day

  • good just for a bedroom?

  • Had a different brand. Would not recommend. They generally don't have the cooling capacity to cool a room, and they create negative pressure which draws warm air in.
Better off with a window unit or a dual hose model if you can find one.

  • How convenient is it to move around the house, say between the lounge and the kitchen, since it has an air pipe?

  • Perfect, I've been thinking of getting a portable aircon, as I have no air conditioning despite regular 40+ days in summer here. And sometimes I work night shifts and have to sleep in the heat. My room is probably 4*5 so it won't be great but surely it could reduce the room by 10 degrees or so?

There is repeated advice all through this thread that this unit is not powerful enough to be effective.
1.5kW portable = nothing. Get something more powerful. 3Kw+ is preferable for a portable.

    • +1

Don't buy one of these expecting it to cool the room. The air blowing directly at you will be cool, but overall these are likely to increase the room temp rather than reduce it.

  • There is a solution, but not available in Australia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igAFM55wp8U
