99c is too expensive when it includes my soul.
what's wrong with godaddy?
I was about to sign up and then i read this :SApart from being the largest domain registrar? Nothing really, you just need to use your brain and not click on any of the deals they shove in your face on checkout. Once it's registered, seriously, how often do you need to visit their control panel to manage it apart from transferring to another registrar when it's due for renewal?
The problem is transferring to another provider. They've blocked automatic transfers to other providers (to stop customers fleeing), and they needed sixty day's notice (as I recall) the last time I tried transferring a domain from them to someone better.
That thing they do, where they shove random products in to your shopping cart in the hopes you won't notice & will pay for them at checkout? Their service doesn't get any better.
just a note: min 60 days is part of the icann rules for .com
I'm not big on GoDaddy's silly advertising either, but I don't think you're telling the full story here .. firstly, it is true they have the domain locked by default, but I don't think that's a bad thing. There are some sneaky domain companies out there that try to trick people into transferring over. At least by having this "barrier" it means there's an additional step required to allow the transfer to go through. And this additional step is easy to do .. simply log into your control panel and unlock it prior to performing the transfer.
Also, I have never had any time issues in transferring over, no such 60 days notice.
I will say this though .. the Godaddy control panel is ugly as sin.
Probably nothing wrong.
Can you find anything wrong with GoDaddy in the following?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w91Ktbi5BsIt's hard to erase a bad history. They're infamous for overly-sexual advertising, killing an elephant, stealing searched domains, once supporting SOPA and most recently, a severe outage due to "corrupted router data tables" (and not Anonymous hackers as originally suggested). And like most evil corporations, they provide budget (supposedly unreliable) hosting services :)
Saying all that, most long-standing domain registrants that I know have had down time at some time or another (e.g. can't login to update DNS records at worst possible time…). I have recently transferred my domains from the Devil (GoDaddy) to the Devil's son (Crazydomains…guess you can call him Go ;)) because I couldn't resist buying 10 years for only $30! But with crazydomains you only get what you've paid for - a domain - so you'll need to pay for (or use a free) DNS services provider if you're not planning to use a proper hosting provider.
I receive probably an e-mail every 2 days or more from GoDaddy about their latest "specials", and only recently realised I snubbed an important account summary e-mail because it mentioned GoDaddy. You can imagine how frustrating that could be when they're informing you of an upcoming expiry. And expiries is what GoDaddy is infamous for. By default they activate auto-renewal, a good thing for an important website. But see that free .INFO they give you? That's where people get caught out paying $11.99 to renew something they most likely never even used.
The most frustrating thing is that if you forget to transfer your $1 domain to a cheaper registrant next year you'll pay GoDaddy's overpriced re-newal fee (maybe currently $14.99?). That adds up when you own 10 or more domains that aren't even making a profit. And it kinda sucks you can't keep your cool e-mail [email protected] for life without paying for it the rest of said life…
$1.17 for 1 year if you include the 18c ICANN fee
"The ICANN fee for .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .asia, .jobs, .xxx and .mobi is A$0.18 per domain name registration year."Moved all my domains off them a year ago.
Couldn't be happier.
you can't complain now, but you will complain in the future.
