Too much for a 6 year old phone

    • +8

Some people just can't see past the branding

      • Nah. I think it's more that the deal sort of sucks (depending on their condition). I have one of these (128GB), it's still going great. I bought it in 2021 for about $750. The other day I did a quote for trade-in, it came up with $75, no damage. Maybe these refurb units have had a lot of repair go into them but if not it sounds Cash Converters-ish.

      • You mean apple colour glasses

Too much for a 6 year old phone

It's released in 2020. But yeah, too much. I would've considered iPhone XS at this price, but SE is meh.

      • These are basically an iPhone 8 with an updated processor and better camera released in 2020.
Had a look on boost. Excellent condition 256Gb is $339.
son had one, pretty ordinary compared with same age 12 mini 256GB @ Boost is $500

Used to have a 12 mini but had to give it back when changed jobs, got the 13 mini (2021) which as a 256GB refurb is still $650. Still the best small phone available.

      It's 4.5 years old.
Some people like a smaller phone (me).
Some people like having a dedicated home button (me).
Some people like not having a notch carved out of their screen (me).
Some people are quite happy with the performance (me).

On a side note my macbook pro is 12 years old, hasn't missed a beat, still does everything i ask of it.
Some people upgrade their stuff way too readily and for often no particularly good reason (not me).

      • +3

Some people just like to be negative.

My 2013 MacBook Pro has been amazing, it’s just starting to show its age. I heard a good Windows, Dell or Lenovo can last a whopping 3 years before slowing

Google “OCLP”. Can run the latest macOS on older Mac’s with OCLP

          • @zemphism: Do you rate it? I was just using this until it died, just for reading news and OzB

          • @zemphism: OCLP doesn’t really help much as the biggest problem for old macs running latest macos is the outdated spec of the computer itself. If the spec is in line with newer models (e.g. 16G+ of RAM) then it should be fine. Other than that then no need to try at all.
For old Intel Macs, just keep them on Catalina as long as possible. Even Windows 10 could be a decent option if you don’t really need macos but just need the latest apps.

Agree 100% it’s about what the device can do, not about age. It’s old but not obsolete like Arnie in the Terminaror lol. Ozbargain tech know it alls just go by Ram specs, and assume performance is directly proportional to ram, which goes up every year for marketing reasons mostly. Just like in cars, where the no. Of cylinders is proportional to performance lol. Many a Japanese 4 will slay Detroit iron or 12 cyl jags. As someone who fixes everyone’s stuff, non tech savvy users are well served by this reliable, snappy, and often still supported tech with plentiful cheap cases parts and accessories. It’s not a stellar price but its a perfectly adequate device with a resale value of $100 plus once you’ve used it, which has to be factored in to owning apple devices.

With the cheap Motorolas offering 5 major OS updates now, I can’t see much point in these older iPhones anymore. 6 year old iPhones must be near the end of the road in terms of software support, you are compromising on battery life and screen too. The only area an old iPhone could probably still compete would be the main camera?

Really if you must be in the Apple ecosystem, you would want something with a bit more life in it than this phone will offer. You can’t really cheap out with Apple.;)

  • -2

Agreed, wasn’t this only like 450 brand new?

  • Pass. I've got the SE 3rd gen and its showing its age! Still avail new somehow…

  • +5

This is a woeful deal - this phone has pretty bad battery, no 5G support, lcd screen and it's 4 years old.

    • Yup. 4 year old used phones shouldn’t cost anywhere near this much.

Boxing day sales at the beginning of December?? This is a new thing right?

    • +1

black friday deals for some went all november

halloween - christmas - easter at the supermarkets seem to overlap so much sometimes im not even sure what year it is anymore.
though, i WOULD welcome year round fruit hot cross buns.

    • Along with Boxing Day sales that expire before Boxing Day.

  • +2

    Maybe for $59

    • +1

      i'd settle for 69

      • i know you like 69 but pls keep it yourself

      • +1

We need a GoFundMe for this

        • +1

          lol @ $400,000 for that plate… FFS.

          • +1

            @pegaxs: Wash your mouth out

          • @pegaxs: Just gone to $600k.

I want to meet the dude who bid $420k

        • What car to put it on though? I woulda said Goggomobil Dart - but looks like it was in 1959 not 1969 - so not as n i c e

      • +1

I'll throw in the 4.20 for ya too !

  • priced to clear

lmao, the missus' screen on one of these got hit by a car (long story) and when they said it'd be 180 for that and the battery (which also means losing the official thumb print button), and I Googled, there was plenty on sale (preowned) for around 170.

The story continues but for once I won't ramble needlessly, point being, there's plenty around for plenty less. No deal.

    • -2

Yeah sure there were, go ahead and find me plenty of these for around 170, I’ll wait.

      • -1

Out at the moment, here's a quick bing, 5 in a row for around 180. Can't imagine you'd have to look hard to find cheaper

        • 64gb is not 256gb…

          • @lordezekiel: Oof, didn't see the size.

Still too much to pay, but definitely not a comparable item. I'll take my L to go.

  • Thanks everyone, I won't buy it now. I needed an iOS phone for my Japan trip (apple wallet needed for suica card) I'll search Gumtree

    • Double check, some older phone only Japanese version can do suica/IC

      • Huh? I thought nearly all Australian iPhone models from iP8 to ip16 series worked with suica?

Someone care to explain. What phones android or iphone work in Japan suica wallet?

        • +1

You're correct, every iPhone from the iPhone 8 onwards works with digital Suica… it's Android where you'll run into issues and you need a Japanese model for FeliCa support.

      • +1

The se works. Only Android needs to be Japan purchased to use their ic cards.

    • +1

You can top up your suica card at a machine at any station. You don’t need a phone.

  • +8

$259 for such an old used phone with no 5G isn't a bargain.

Seems more like using OzB for free advertising than a bargain.

    • questionable value yeah

    • +1

After seeing the recent Motorola deals, my expectations for a phone at that price has definitely increased. I expect a modern design 5g new phone, oled screen, and 5 major OS updates. Ridiculous how even some models have 12gb of ram on these cheaper Motorolas models now. Obviously trying to future proof lol

  • +1

    no deal

  • +3

Cant wait for a deal on the 3GS…

    • I traded with a buddy to get his 3G, me missus at the time had a 3GS and she could play GTA3 on it, blew my mind hole. Said she'd swap with me, didn't care for the differences between the 3G and the 3GS, should have taken her up on it, split up like a fortnight later RIP me

  • Considering this phone has about 3 more years of support, it’s probably the lowest entry, price-wise to an iPhone. You probably can find it cheaper on marketplace, but for 256GB, it’s fair enough from a business reseller.

    • +4

This website isn't called OzFairEnough though.

      • +1

        Fair enough shrug

  • -1

maybe try and sell at this price 20 years later… when people looking to relive retro life…
