Brother MFC-L2750DW - Low Toner Indication When Using Generic Toners

Hi, I purchased 3 generic toners last year and tested them back then and they all worked fine.

The issue is when recently replaced one of them with a new toner, it continues to say low/empty toner even though I have reset the toner on the printer as per below.

With power on, open the front cover
Press BACK and STOP buttons at the same time once/quickly
Press BACK button one more time by itself
Press TNR-HC to select the toner type:
Press Yes to confirm reset.

However even after resetting it a few times, it continues to say toner empty and won't print.

Maybe a recent firmware update is stopping generic cartridges from working. In the past, I've used the reset toner function to successfully use generic toners.

I now have 2 new non-working cartridges.

A game of cat and mouse between Brother and generic toner cartridges.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you
John

Maybe a recent firmware update is stopping generic

    99% this is the issue

    • I'm cautious about it and don't update but my kids probably just click yes and yes…

Any way to roll back the firmware?

It's typically not a prompt for firmware. You would need to go to a bigger effort than that for a firmware update.

Lucky I said 99% because it's now likely the 1% at fault.

        • Maybe just need to buy new updated toner cartridges.

A shame to throw 2 new ones out that I know work if the machine will allow.

          • @JimB: Check Aliexpress. Sometimes you can buy the implant PCB with an upgraded chip without having to buy a whole new toner.

  • Usually a Firmware Update needs to be on a computer with the admin password (from the back of the Printer). I skip mine, because its just a pain all the time.

    • oh ok.

I'll check when I get home.

The latest firmware is ZD/1.12 14/11/2024

  • i have MFC-L2740DW
not the same issue but many2 times when i print, there will be some part of the print out that blur or like without ink. sometimes i need to reprint 2-3 times to get decent result.
not sure why. maybe low ink? but i dont print that much

    • maybe poor toner quality.

      generic is hit and miss.

That's why when I buy multiple, I test them all to make sure they are all working fine before the return window is closed.

      • hmm i dont remember if i had the same issue from the beginiing but yeah probably will just buy another toner its just $12 anyway

        • I’m the same, it’s not the $12 or whatever, it’s just a waste of plastic to dispose of it.

  • Come to think of it.. I wonder if by testing the new toner and then putting them back in the box for future use is part of the problem?

Having said that, I haven't had issues with resetting the toner life status in the past.

    Never update the firmware.
