Recommendation for 40cm Boys Bike

Any recommendation for decent quality 40cm bike? I purchased this bike from Kmart and its of very poor quality as the brake broke just riding inside the house for 3 days.

https://www.kmart.com.au/product/40cm-burst-bike-43034611/
Material: Steel, rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
Maximum weight capacity: 40kg
Assembly: Required
Adult assembly required
Product weight: 12.2kg

This bike is $20 more but seems to be of similar quality except the colour. weights 2.4 kg less and has alloy and Steel

Material: Steel, alloy, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber and polypropylene (PP)
Maximum weight capacity: 40kg
Assembly: Adult assembly required
Product weight: 9.8kg

I guess 40cm bikes don't have rear brakes (except the coaster brake)

Does it have to be new? Facebook marketplace usually has plenty of cheap bikes

      Garage sales are often cheaper…

    • No it doesn't have to be new as he is growing very fast. Great idea, thank you

as above, second hand for a 40cm bike is the go as they grow out of it so fast

I got a kid a vuly bike a a year or so ago and it was pretty good quality for the price and they still use it.

Never buy bikes from kmart. If you want one, get it second hand.

Buy second hand. You should be able to pick one up for $100 thats a good brand and hardly used. Kids grow out of them quickly and often they are hardly used. I've got some really good quality bikes at great prices over the years.

You might also find a local bike co-op that services kids bikes and sells them cheap.

Oh, and get rid of the training wheels. Start on a balance bike (no pedals).

  • Malvern Star?

  • First of all, there is no such thing as a 40cm bike. But you already knew K-mart was clueless about bikes .
Kmart have mis-translated "16 inch" wheel size. It is a bit like translating "foot cream" to "30cm cream" :)
Technically it is also ISO-406mm, but nobody uses that.

How tall is the kid? They are likely to outgrow the 16" wheels very quickly. From around 1.1m they are ready for a 20"-wheel bike, that will last for a few years, and probably be much better to ride.

I think youll find the ISO number 406 refers to 20". ISO measures the rim bead set diameter, rather than the tyre outer diameter that 16" or 20" refer to. 40cm references the outer tyre diameter (roughly)

We should be migrating to metric measurements but unfortunately it is easier to refer to the tyee diameter in inches. That is even though a wide 20" tyre will have a different diamter to a narrow 20" tyre.

Ah d'oh! yes, of course. If it was 406mm, it would make too much sense for K-mart to call it 40 cm, and my criticism would make no sense :-) Yes, I meant to say 16" is ISO 305mm.

        • Theyve just converted the 16" to nearest round cm for total diameter, not rim diameter. Rightly or wrongly, aussies are used to that measurement.
