Vornado 633DC Energy Smart Medium Air Circulator $182 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ The Good Guys Commercial

1020

Spotted this in the comments of the 533DC deal, TGG Commercial seem to have brought back this good price on the 633DC model. The DC models seem to be quite popular on here so I have finally bought one.

Delivery was $9 for me.

Many ways to get a TGG commercial membership, e.g. via some super funds, energy suppliers etc.

  • Thanks. Bought one

How do you get a commerical account?

      • Had union shopper many moons ago. Seems they don't check whether you're still a member

      • if you have an abn I think they will accept you for a commercial account

  • +2

    Are these quiet?

    • +6

DC fans are quite a bit quieter than AC ones in my experience.

    • +8

Kinda. Obvs the higher the setting, the louder it will be. I find the lower setting is suitable for my needs.

One thing to consider is there's no timers on these, which is pretty annoying given the price point. I had to buy a smart plug so I can set it to turn off after a few hours for when I'm sleeping.

      • is it a mechanical switch on the fan itself? thinking if i can use a smart plug as a remote if i just leave the fan permanently 'on'

        • Yes.

It's one mechanical dial that goes from off up to "99". So. it will just come back on at whatever that dial is at when power is restored to it.

I have one and really appreciate that level of simplicity and silence - no beeps. But on the other hand, it means no remotes to control speed or angle.

        • +1

Yeah, you can see it in the images but there's one dial on the front of the fan. You can switch it from 0 (off) and then however powerful you want it.

Mine's always "on" but I use a smart plug to turn it off or on or to have it on a timer.

    • +1

pretty quiet up until about halfway up, then the same as the standard version (loud)

    • +4

I've got this and the bigger size AC version.

This is the quietest model, but only at the low fan speed settings. It's nice, creates a gentle breeze around the entire room.

The AC version is already really quiet. If you are used to cheap pedestal fans it's like going from an ICE car to an EV. It's the excellent bearings in the motor, it's amazing.

The DC motor is quieter than the AC only at low fan speeds. It's almost undetectable. If ultra quiet at night in a bedroom is required this is the model for you.

At medium-high fan speeds you are hearing the noise of the fan blades cutting the air. This can spin at 1800 rpm and that's noticeable, but still quieter than a cheap box or pedestal fan. At this speed there is no difference in noise between the AC and DC. This is a big airflow at high speeds, they aren't joking when they say you can feel it 20-30 metres away. Your won't great the difference between the motors if you are cooling a room or blasting air con down a hallway or pointing it at an indoor trainer.

I'd recommend the cheaper and larger 660 on low speed for most uses. It was $159 at GG over the weekend. Only get this DC version if you are a sensitive bedroom sleeper.

  • Is this the same one? https://amzn.asia/d/8h8BcXV

    • +1

No this is the AC version

    • +4

you can get the 660ac from costco for $135, i got one yesterday, its really good

    • +2

      This is the 533?

      • +3

You are right I’m an idiot

  • +4

    Not a fan of this.

    • +5

Seems like it didn't blow you away?

      • +4

I just caught wind of this deal, what are the cons?

        • +1

The huffing and puffing dis-gust of blowhards who really just want to shoot the breeze.

  • Can recommend

  • +1

Will this fan drown out youth crime noise?

  • vornado 660 or this one ?
    any thoughts?

    • this one

    • DC is the better option

    • or dyson am07?

    • +3

I ended up getting the 660 instead of this. Based on my reading, it's much more powerful and these 2 are completely different beasts.

      • did you get it from costco for $135?

        • I bought an Amazon Warehouse one for $118 (plus gift cards) but would have gotten the Costco deal if it was available earlier.

      • The Dyson designs are crap compared to these.

For a similar airflow at anything approaching distance the tiny, tiny little fan in the Dyson base needs to run at a very fast and unpleasant sounding speed.

  • How do you get membership?

  • +5

Why do people like these so much? Seem expensive to me. What am I missing

    • +10

In a suitably sized room, this aimed at one of the corner roof can make the whole room breezy.

      • better than a ceiling fan? my ceiling fan is 15 years old. i couldnt understand $180 for a desk fan but that makes sense if it can do a whole room.

Edit: i see it circulates air. so in my case my bedroom is 20-30 degrees and wont cool it down.

        • All fans heat the room that it's in. Simple thermodynamics dude. :)

    • +4

Asked and answered (usually multiple times) on literally every Vornado thread on Ozbargain. The answers won't change.

    • Cant believe that you hasnt caught the wind of it yet

This is $183.20 (Free Delivery) for Amazon Prime members

    • +4

That's the 533DC. This is the bigger 633DC model.

      • +1

Oops my bad, I copied the model number from the body of your deal not realizing that it was different to the model number in the subject line. Sorry.

  • +3

I know it’s not DC and likely not as good, but does anyone know if the Kmart one at $59 is okay thanks https://www.kmart.com.au/product/vortex-circulator-fan-43387… know it’s not DC likely as good, but does anyone know if the Kmart one is okay thanks

    • +2

I'm interested in this as well, I'd like to experiment at a lower price point before going all in.

    • +1

I had Kmart one. It was good in the beginning but after 2 weeks I felt it was noisier and speed change difference became negligible. Smooth return at kmart. Just went with vornado DC one and much happier

    • +1

It's 3/4 the product the cheapest Vornado in performance, but unlikely to last a full season. The bearings and rotor case in the Kmart unit are shit tier. After 3-6 months it will sound grinding loud and eventually refuse to turn.

Couple of times a year you can pull the motor apart to remove the rotor and the bearings, clean them and apply lube to get in back to new. It's not difficult, takes maybe an hour.

A Vornado costs about 3X with 5 year manufacturer warranty.

  • Shows as 259 for me on the commercial sire

    • Still showing $182 for me. Maybe your commercial membership is not working properly? It's $259 on the non-commercial version.

    • Same :(

  • +3

    A deal for fanboys

"Air Circulator" - you mean a Fan, right?

    • Nope, a fan blows air, this circulates.

      • +1

So if the ambiance temp is 38c, then it will circulate 38c air around?

        • +6

Yes, much like a fan will blow 38c air.

        • <picardsmacksforehead.jpg>

  • These are the bomb! Best fan I've ever owned.

  • So how exactly does this work? Is this a air circulator or a fan, or are they the same thing? I live in a 3 bedroom appartment on the top floor, so it gets quite hot. I was thinking of putting this in the living room instead of using the aircon. Will this help with the heat?

    • +2

It helps circulate air around the room. so if the room is hot, then it will just circulate hot air.

You will still need to have the aircon on, so instead of the aircon blowing down into the room, it will help spread the cool air through the room more efficiently.

    • +2

It's pretty much a genious marketing plot by Vornado. How do you differate yourself from the other 100 fan models? You call yourself an "air circulator" instead of a "fan".

It's the same thing, just different shape and size of fan. They claim this somehow different and that you can point it at different direction to make air move around the room, but you can literally do it with any other fan in the world. They didn't invent air pressure…

      • +2

While I agree that the term "air circulator" is comically stupid, these fans are fundamentally different from the old school floor standing fans you're used to.

The steep blade shape projects a cone of air much further than longer but shallower blades. I've tested the two designs side by side, with the front grilles removed as a variable.

In a similar way, computer fans can be optimised for higher airflow or higher static pressure- they're not all the same at the same RPM.

There's nothing special about Vornado, they are just the best known brand in Australia for this kind of design. Here there's also the Kmart option (I've not tried it) and in Asia there are dozens of alternatives.

You will still need to have the aircon on, so instead of the aircon blowing down into the room, it will help spread the cool air through the room more efficiently.

I think this is mistaken. I don't understand why anyone who has owned these would say this.

Cool AC air will spread within a room fine by itself. The Vornado style fans are good at moving AC across into other rooms, or cool you down within the same room without the need for AC.

        • No argument here. Different blade sizes, arrangement, shape - all will impact how much air it can push and noise levels.

  • sorry but can’t understand the difference between a DC and an AC fan?

    • +1

I can't give a proper explanation between AC and DC, but the best way to think of it is this:

AC settings = Low, Medium, High
DC settings = 1 - 100, so you can fine tune the speed

DC is also more energy efficient.

    • +1

The DC fans are more efficient, have more speed options (you can select any speed from 0-100%) so they can pump more air at a quieter volume (I think), and can be controlled by a smart switch (they will come back on at the speed selected before it was switched off at the wall). I'm not sure what other benefits they have.

  • Recently got one. Man these things move some serious air.

Great by the back door, pushing in cool evening air!

  • Showing $167 for me??

    • +1

In the last deal about this, it depends on your "level" of TGGC membership. Some people will have a better discount but most will get the $182 if using it via their super or similar.

      More info here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14840161/redir

I chose not to put the $167 price as it seems most people get the higher one and it felt a bit clickbaity

  • any good DC pedestal fans? found them hard to find

  • The larger 660 is even cheaper. 660 or this one?

  • Is anyone able to comment how it would compare vs the Aldi $69 fan https://www.aldi.com.au/special-buys/special-buys-wed-20-nov…

    • Haven't tried either but I have something similar to the Aldi one. Depends on what the lowest speed is which they don't list, but if it's fast then it will be very noisy- the max speed is almost 3K RPM which is kind of insane for a fan designed for the home.

Looks like it's got an auto swivel function. Might have a tilt function, can't tell from the photo. I don't think the Vornado has any oscillation ability.

      • Cheers for the reply and insight!

  • Hopefully Amazon.au will match this???

    • Probably not as it's the commercial store, but maybe as they have done good prices in the past.

  • They dont call them fans anymore?

What's the difference between this and a fan? $150

  • -2

Just get the Kmart Vortex fan for $59 - same thing, I got one and its great, also has a remote control
    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/vortex-circulator-fan-43387…

    • Bought one today and have been using it. It seems worse than a pedestal fan. How do you place it to maximise circulation?

  • What’s the best and most affordable DC tower fan on the market right now?

  • I bought 2 units back in 2020 for $136 each. Still going strong. I use one to move cool air from the living room down a corridor into my home office that has no aircon. Works a treat. The column of air is narrow and good over long distance.

  • Dang - wish I could get a TGG membership :(
