I decided to purchase a short holiday via the vendor's website. I put in all of my details & attempted to pay a deposit via credit card. The web site indicated that the credit card payment had "failed" - no further explanation provided. I just assumed that my bank had a temporary problem so I contacted the vendor & obtained BPay credentials & paid via another financial institution. Holiday booked. The next day, I checked my credit card account & found that the "failed" transaction had been charged to my account. After much discussion, my bank has agreed to refund the "failed" transaction. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Both the vendor & my bank are Australian based.

We had something similar with buying rail tickets overseas. In our case the transaction disappeared in a couple of days. There was a glitch with the software that meant the bank saw the transaction but the vendor timed out before it saw the response from the bank. The bank held the transaction funds in case completion occurred later on but when the “handshake” protocols didn’t complete in a timely fashion they were released. I wasn’t happy either because I was worried if I tried to book again I would be charged for two sets of tickets. I contacted the ticket seller for clarification and they said they had seen this issue before. The first transaction wasn’t completed.
Yes it sometimes happens, a Paid By Other Means Chargeback should sort it out, I am not sure why you needed to have too much discussion with the bank.
