If there was a book written on it you'd know how good it is. Failing that you could get the subscription and it could summarise the book for you and tell you how good it is.

A service that summarises highly regarded books which enables people to memorise the author's conclusions and insights and appear intelligent, without spending the time to understand how those conclusions were reached. I don't see the value in learning factoids but clearly many people do

      • Yes, I agree, but: there are a huge amount of 'best sellers' where the author poses personal experience, or anecdotal evidence, as justification or motivation for doing [insert topic] a certain way. The vast majority of these can, and arguably should, be summarized and assimilated in an hour, rather than a day, as there is no 'real' evidence to support their claims. Sometimes they are just bad advice written in a way that motivates you to keep reading. And, for a lot of people, that sunken cost of having read a book, makes them recommend that book, rather than acknowledge it was actually rubbish. Why not summarize it, and reduce the sunken cost, and therefore likely-hood of recommending something that's actually not very good.

Isn't the real problem that we can't find genuine reviews (of any product). Everything is either trash of 5 stars.

The ideal way to use this service would be to read the summary and then read the book if it seems valuable, but that involves a lot of effort. Basically conceding that reviews are useless and you need to assess everything personally.

Advertisers are already aware, Google is training Gemini on the reddit API, so when people ask reddit for a recommendation they will soon be reading an ad.

    • Been using it for 2 years in the past, probably listened to more than 100 books. The problem is, this is just a summary, more like extended table of contents. Now looking back, I can’t remember even one book that I have listened to.

Imagine your math teacher tells you the answer, but not all the steps to reach to conclusion. You will learn about the key points, but it won’t be yours if you didn’t try to work it out. And sometimes the summary isn’t as accurate, not sure if it was generated by AI.

They used to have a button on their website to email the summary to your kindle. Now it’s hidden somewhere need a few more clicks.

Maybe if you want to check if a book is worth reading, you can use this service along with all the reviews.

  • I thought 80% off earlier today was good, this is a bargain.
