Linus Tech Tips review

Not cheap, but discounted from purported early access cost and full price. TrueNAS running underneath, which isn't always easy to configure. This product aims to fill that niche - to handle the configuration for you and present you with a user-friendly interface.

Funding from the likes of LTT and TrueNAS themselves which gives the product a big platform to start with and some assurance of longevity. Already a pretty reasonable-sized community pre-purchasing licenses

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2024

    Still very early in development.

    Linus Tech Tips review

Wouldn't call it a review by any means, a showcase by an investor perhaps.
Software does look interesting though, if it can deliver on its promises.

  • Does hexos allow expansions of vdevs with new drives

    • +2

It's basically just TrueNAS with an extra skin on it that simplifies the UI.

TrueNAS now allows you to expand raidZ vdevs but it will only expand the vdev by the size of the currently smallest drive in that vdev. When disks are upgraded to larger drives this rule still holds true. So if you have a raidZ2 vdev consisting of 6 x 10TB drives and you add a 20TB drive to it you will now have 50TB of usable space.

In the Techno Tim video above he talks about expanding the pool but I think he meant to say vdev since it's been possible to upgrade the pool for a while now.

      https://youtu.be/Vyyq0_aOkIo?t=739

I can't imagine software targeted towards beginners that allows someone to add vdevs to an existing pool. If one vdev goes in a pool then the whole pool is lost. Not everyone who uses ZFS seems to know this.

  • So linked to a server?

    • +3

Do you know any other NAS OSs that wouldn't be run on a server?

      • I meant it’s licensed to the server ie can you move to new server later, or have this one license on two servers concurrently.

Edit: from the FAQ “ Licenses are easily transferable between servers by "disconnecting" the server via the command deck, and then claiming the new server.”

    • It's software to run on your own Network Attached Storage server. You could buy a used machine off eBay and stick a couple of hard drives in it, for example.

Really wanted to think this had potential but I think this kills it. Shitful practice to push a BF sale of a pre alpha state piece of software. There is zero incentive to try this over unraid.

There is zero incentive to try this over unraid.

Just because you know how to use unraid and all its quirks doesn't mean there's zero value. Maybe for you, but there is a market for NAS software that doesn't require hours of work to learn/maintain. Personally running plain Debian with a ZFS pool and many docker containers, can definitely see the value in less work.

Didn't understand a single word of that lmao

      • +1

Xpenology is free and is dead simple.

      • Sure, you go ahead and fund Linus's family and friends and at the same time perpetuate the nonsense of funding pre alpha state software. Good for you bud.

    • +1

You're essentially buying for the future state not the current state. No different to backing a kickstarter.

  • can you use shortlinus coupon to get $69 off?

    • Can't see a way to use the coupon

    • Not if HexOS is sponsored by dbrand…

  • Ive been using unraid for a decade. I am tempted to go down this path, but it's just not ready for me. But it's a crazy good price……

  • +5

Not at all in a state where it’s worth US$99. Just my 2 cents.

  • +2

I think of this as more of a Kickstarter move. Yes it's pre-alpha, yes it's not finished but it's built on TrueNAS and it's backed by Linus and TrueNAS amongst others. Don't look at this as buying the product to use now (while you can do just that), look at it more as backing the idea and helping fund something you will use down the track. That's my view anyway.

    • -1

It is very much beta phase, not pre-alpha. Fully agree with everything else you're saying.

      • +1

        Don't know why I said pre-alpha. I think I meant pre-release.

      • -1

        It's not.

  • What is the competing product??

    • +2

Sweat and tears (apparently) using TrueNAS without a pretty UI. Or a commercial setup on synology or QNAP. Bit of a niche between the two options above as to who would value paying this as an ongoing service yet wants to roll their own hardware solution also.

      • +1

There is also Unraid, which is where one lead developer of Hexos used to be employed by.

  • I bought a license the other day still haven't gotten invited to the beta, I have a old windows home server that Isnt updated because I have no time to maintain it so I'm hoping this will be a lot easier to to keep up to date.

Linus video feels rushed and doesn't have much info, had to search for some better videos.

I don't like that it currently can only be administered by their webui, you can't make changes if it isn't connected to the internet.

  • +1

Why are you spending $150 on an interface?

    • The deal has expired now, a license is $305.
