Note this one does not have ethernet

    • +1

It is probably more the home hub benefit than Ethernet for most people as a reason for the higher spec model. And even then, only if they have HomeKit and matter smart devices.

  • Is there any specials around for the Ethernet 128Gb model?

    • +3

The cheapest I can see right now is
      $217.53 with code BF2422 (down from $278.88)

Apple direct with the $40 gift card

      • Thanks for the heads up. I got a variable GC from Woolworths and got almost $25 of Woolworths points. Then used that to buy this and got the $40 voucher.

  • Still waiting for the missed 128gb Ethernet one!
Even though I may not use the Ethernet.

    • That was a good deal!

    • +2

Most likely it won't be delivered if you missed it.

  • This or Amazon Cube??

    • +4

      This

      • Would be able to get me further details. Saw the review and seems like Cube prevails a bit but I don't know.

        • I find that hard to believe. The processor performance and app quality and choice alone. So had a Squize and this is what WhatHifi had to say:
Amazon Fire TV Cube vs Apple TV 4K: verdict
This contest is a bit one-sided. The Apple TV 4K has better picture and sound quality, and is smaller and sleeker device. The Amazon Fire TV Cube's HDMI input and Alexa controls can be useful, but they're not enough to make up for what is a rather uninspiring AV performance.
Having said that, the Amazon Fire TV Cube is bound to be discounted regularly, especially around big sale events such as Amazon Prime Day and Black Friday. If you see a great deal it could be worth snapping up. Otherwise, we would pick the Apple device every time.
          Overall winner: Apple TV 4K

          • @entropysbane: Really not as simple as that, with many reviews coming to different conclusions. Reviewer probably wasn't aware HDR can be abled all content (whoch makes the colours pop like the Apple), however many people prefer the TRUE colours. There really isn't any discernable difference in Picture\Audio when both devices are configured like for like.

Secondly, comes down to what you want to do and your ecosystem, really very different devices.

I think ATV is the only mainstream media device with a 4K interface, other than PS5.

It makes a big difference on a large 4K TV.

Also, it seems neither Shield Pro nor FTV has Audible for the Ozzies.

I am hoping ATV does. Just bought one. Thanks, OP.

          • @Jstrrrr: I don’t think it has an audible app. It does have Amazon music.
While there are book reading apps on the store, I think for audible you would need to cast to the ATV

            • @entropysbane: Quite apart from being Android devices and there is an Android Audible app, I am quite sure between the Shield and FTV, at least one of them has an Audible app in its own store. It's just not available to Australia for some reason.

    • I share Netflix with friends and only Apple TV can ignore same household check.

      This or Amazon Cube??

The Cube FTW all the time. Heck, the 4K Fire TV Stick is even the better performer for value and features wise.

      • I have an atv at home and bought a firestick 4K for my father in law to watch the soccer on paramount on his old Sony TV.
The only thing the firestick (or chromecast devices) have over the ATV is price. Which is not to be sneezed at, and they are designed as streaming devices only. Which of course is fine for most people such as my FiL. Absolutely anything beyond that and it is the ATV, Cube and Shield.
Some people still advocate the shield, but it really is getting far too long in the tooth.
The ATV is by far the most powerful and has a very wide range of apps for a variety of purposes, and its user interface is probably the best for this type of device. No ads for starters. And definitely worth it at this price.

      • I have 5 Firesticks and one Firestick Cube. There are some issues with the Cube:
        1. Alexa audio responses can "disappear" if it thinks the TV is still on when it's not
        2. FHD interface looks bad on a large 4K set
        3. Some mainstream apps are not available for Australia, for no obvious reason, and NOT workable despite sideloading as far as my experiments have gone.

    • Different, the Cube lets you sideload anything and when enabled the upscaling is pretty good. Dedicated buttons for the common apps make it super friendly.
The single remote controls everything, home theatre\soundbar ect.. all just works.
It's also a device that controls everything, that's why people love taking them to Hotels.
Whereas the Apple TV is optimized for picture quality out of the box, but you are locked into apples Ecosystem. While the Apple remote is good, it's pretty terrible at controlling other devices.

I do note though at some point NEW Fire Devices will start to be shipped with Amazons Propriety OS which would erode the biggest plus.

  • What is the point of the one with Ethernet? I assume if I don’t know I don’t need?

    • Ethernet and Apple home hub.

I have both 128 and 64 model. No normal user don't need 128GB SSD, Ethernet and Apple home hub

      • The 64 model can’t do home hub?

        • I read from somewhere. I don't have other apple home device so never try

    • If your TV is in a spot with crap WiFi, or if you regularly stream hi bitrate 4k.

      • Point to note, many devices (not this one though), but for TV's in general WiFi is often faster as the ethernet port is often on a slow usb hub and crippled for speed.

    • From a thread on reddit because I was wondering the same thing:

The current Apple TV is sold in two forms, one with WiFi only and one with WiFi and Ethernet. Only the latter model includes support for Thread.

  • Thanks op

What is wrong with you hahaha

      • Sorry I’m new but did I do something wrong?

    • Not sure why you got negged for saying that. OzB is sometimes full of weird sentiments.

  • Any point in getting this over Amazon cube / 4K Max?

    Anyone’s shipped yet?

      Not me

      Nope :(

    • Shipping information received. That was on the 4th
