New 7 Seater (Non-EV) Recommendations or Should I Get 2-3yo Old Car?

Hi all, looking to buy a new 7 seater car.

Secondary car that will be driven 5k/yr if that. Budget is around $70k.

1st preference is Kluger $66.5k
2nd is Kodiaq (new facelift model 25) $60k
3rd is CX80. $60k

I want a small SUV not huge so 5+2. Not a people mover.
Back seats are for little kids.

Would you recommend any other car?
Wait for any new other cars if they are worth waiting?

Must be reliable and economical.

Or do you think it’d be smart to get a 2-3 year old car to save 20-30k as it’s going to be our secondary car? For example I don’t think Kruger’s have had any major changes or facelifts recently? So they’re all kind of same?

  • Love my Kodiaq. It's even better than a certain other car I've often driven, although to be fair it could do with an extra capacitor.

  • If you plan to keep the car more than a few years then I hope you are remembering little kids become bigger over time

    • Unless it is a hatch back, any SUV will be fine up to teenagers. Unless they are basketball player height but then even a Kluger will be consider small.

  • +1

How often will you be using the 6th and 7th seats?

Little kids grow into not so little kids.

If often, then go Kia Carnival with the Diesel.

  • BMW X7 Second hand

  • The Mahindra if you don't mind not having any resale value (Very reliable though).

    The Toyota, otherwise.

    • if you don't mind not having any resale value

This is ozbargain mate. We love our Chinese cars lmao, what's resale value

  • OP needs to rethink this through.

    A 7 seater "small" SUV, and proposes a Kluger…

    What does she actually want?

    Consider a diesel Kia Carnival.

I have a '23 and get 1100kms per tank city driving in smart mode.

Can be as low as 980kms per tank if I am catching Pokemon.

  • Suggested Lexus RX450hL

They're the occasional 7 seat SUV, hybrid power, heaps of features and can be picked up used for roughly your budget

    e.g. https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2019-lexus-rx-rx450…

practical, underrated, luxury and won't depreciate like a rock (1st owner has done that for you)

    Toyota reliability with Lexus comfort

  • Suggested Mitsubishi Outlander

This is a compact 7-seater SUV with a good balance of features, reliability, and economy. It offers plug-in hybrid options, which can be more economical in the long run

  • Suggested Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

    Criteria Match
7-Seater: It offers a 5+2 seating configuration, suitable for small children in the back seats.
Small SUV: It's a mid-sized SUV, not a large people mover.
Budget: New models are within your $70k budget.
Reliability: Known for its durability and comes with a long warranty.
Economical: While not the most fuel-efficient in its class, it offers decent economy for a 7-seater SUV.

    Additional Considerations
Secondary Car: Given your low annual mileage (5k/year), a slightly used Pajero Sport could save you money while still meeting your needs.

  • Tongan Taxi
    9/10 passengers agree.

  • Suggested Ford Everest

I got a 3 year old Ford Everest Trend (2019) a few years back, I was never a Ford fan but it's amazing.
Had to drive from SYD to CBR to pick it up and xfer rego but it's been great

You will save a lot on a second hand car

  • I've had a few rental Klugers over the years and they are thirsty as! (Was before the hybrid option, which may have helped.)

Was going to suggest driving some of the late model Santa Fe's or Sorrento's - they are great to drive in a turbo diesel.

BUT as you're doing such low kms per year, probably opt for a petrol or hybrid. The new Santa Fe's look beautiful in passing, and interior.

Here's a few comments about some in the list:

There's even mention of a "Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max", which if you're an Apple fan could match your 'Pro Max' phone! :-Þ

  • Suggested Just buy an EV.

Yeah the options are pretty boring aren't they?

    • If the Kodiaq was boring I wouldn't have bought it.

      • I test drove one. Wasn't excited. I also own a Skoda and love them

        • Yes, but I had to allow for the 'excitement' of being able to fit my rapidly growing family in the car. My next car will be a sedan.

  • Tank 500
