I just wanted to share this great deal with my fellow honey-loving OzBargainers.

I picked up some jars of the MGO 514+ and MGO 829+ for the family—really happy with the quality and the price. It’s hard to find a single-grade monofloral Manuka honey brand like this, so this is perfect for anyone who appreciates premium honey.

Even when on discount, it’s more expensive than a very simple search.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Manuka-Doctor-Monofloral-Honey-500…
This one supposedly even has a higher MGO (I’m sure this isn’t validated to be clinically relevant).

    • yeah, mate. this is cheaper, but i thin Manuka Doctor is NZ based and this is AU manuka, i guess the main difference is the quality of the bee environment and plant. The website is more expensive - https://www.manukadoctor.com.au/products/mgo-550-manuka-hone… compared to Amazon promo. found one study - https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7693943/ that does mention the higher mgo with higher antimicrobial activity —- Arguably, the Comvita Manuka UMF25+ should have been the most effective against the isolates tested because of it having the highest UMF grade. Therefore, it should have the highest amount of MGO and consequently the most antimicrobial activity.

  • Why those MGOs in particular?

    • i bought one as a gift and one for weekly tea use :)

      • The benefits of Manuka honey are really when it is raw. Heating it will reduce (or perhaps entirely eliminate) the benefits of the MGO. If it's for taste you like it then putting it in tea is fine, but if you're after the MGO benefits, could be wasting your money.

What's the medicinal difference between this and Mercury Hard Apple Cider?

    • Both can be medicinal—just depends on what kind of "healing" you're after! 😄

  • I love honey and eat it daily. What is this particular honey good for?

    • Applying on wounds to cure infections.

      • Really?
How big or small of a wound are we talking here?

        • No idea, I’m not comfortable doing it myself…

@ozbking: Yeh I don't see the point? Big enough wound, you need medication. Small wound, your body will fight it anyway 🤷‍♂️

            • @Timeismonet: Normal Honey (Store-Bought) is often multiflora (from multiple plant sources) and may be processed, with no specific plant dominating its composition. Uses can be a natural sweetener with mild antibacterial properties (due to hydrogen peroxide). It contains antioxidants, enzymes, and trace nutrients and is good for general health but less potent than MGO honey.

—> Many store-bought honeys are heated and filtered, which can destroy beneficial enzymes and nutrients. Raw honey retains more benefits but is less common in standard grocery stores. This is why the Capilano honey-type brands, although they say they are Pure Honey, are NOT Raw and Unfiltered or minimally heated. They are more of a marketing gimmick as obviously Australian Honey will be 100% Pure Australian Honey but no major health benefits as it serves as natural sweetener, which is why it is cheaper to brands like Manuka Doctor, King Island, Biosata, etc.

MGO Honey (Manuka Honey) - Comes from the Manuka tree in Australia and New Zealand. Contains MGO (Methylglyoxal), a natural compound with strong antibacterial and healing properties. Used for things like boosting immunity.

—> More potent and usually tested for MGO levels, making it more expensive.

There is a really good blog by Biosata on the difference between Monofloral and Multifloral and uses- https://biosota.com.au/blogs/resources/manuka-honey-monoflor…

In simple terms, regular honey is great for sweetening your tea, while MGO honey is like a natural medicine with extra healing power.

              • @ash47k: Thanks for the link, it's all very interesting to me. I got my last jar of honey from Coles but before that I got a tub of raw from a farm gate. I'm almost out so I need to make a short trip to find some raw honey.
I'm happy with multi flora, provided it unheated/treated and it's pure. I don't bother putting it on small cuts or abrasions but I definitely eat a decent amount as a substitute for sugar

  • How good are these in comparison to $10 MGO 30 ones at supermarkets? 5 6 times more expensive

    • MGO was discovered in 2008 to be the active ingredient for the antimicrobial effects. However it isn’t active once it gets dissolved by the stomach acid.

  • Yes, it's partially true, but more context is required - While stomach acid can neutralise some antimicrobial compounds, research suggests that Manuka honey retains its antibacterial effects to some extent even after exposure to stomach conditions. MGO is relatively stable under acidic conditions compared to hydrogen peroxide.
