How to Optimize Overlapping Time of Two ISP Internet Connections

Yesterday, I signed up for an iiNet connection, while my current provider is TPG. TPG requires a 30-day notice period to cancel their service, and I informed them yesterday to begin the cancellation process.

Since my TPG connection will remain active for another 30 days, I’d prefer to have the iiNet connection activated closer to the end of that period to avoid overlapping services.

iiNet mentioned that once their modem is delivered, a technician will visit to set it up and activate the connection. They also mentioned that the technician appointment can be delayed, giving me some flexibility to postpone the activation of the new connection.

I’m wondering if any of my fellow OzBargainers have suggestions on how to avoid or minimize this overlap period. Thanks in advance!

  • Why is a technician turning up and not DIY?

It is a vdsl2 connection, the sales person said a technician must come to the place to fix that. I’m not sure how that’s going to work as im in an apartment.

      • haha easy profit

      • That makes cents for the technician. Cheers

Don't NBN boxes have multiple ports on them, so you can have multiple services and you just swap the port? Don't quote me on that, just always assumed that's how it worked.

    • iiNet new connection is actually a vdsl2 connection and the tpg connection is an NBN connection. I’m living in an apartment and got no idea what they are going to do…

      • They need to connect your apartment to the VDSL2 infrastructure. You might need to ask your landlord or body corp for the key and find out where the iiNet node is.

What is your nbn connection type?

        • Thank you very much. The connection I currently have with TPG is NBN FTTB.
I believe the technician might have some idea where to find the node, the landlord and the cooperate is hopeless.
Does that mean when VDSL is activated if I want to switch to NBN back I need the support of a technician again?

          • @Techefy: There should be separate cabling.

      • Be careful here, FTTB is fiber to base. Compared to VDSL, FTTB is normally way faster and very stable. I would suggest to hop onto another provider but on FTTB.

Vdsl2 connection i bought is 500mbps which is 40$ per month for 6 months, my nbn was 25mbps, so I believe it cannot go wrong

@Techefy: Yes it is actually G.Fast up to 1 Gbps.
I have iiNet FTTB (same as TPG FTTB), advertised as 500Mbps but I can actually get close to 900Mbps….

          • @Techefy: iiNet VDSL Max 500/25 jumps back up to $89.99/m after 6 months.

            • @Twix: Yeah, probably I would switch to another provider at that time

    • nbn FTTP box can have multiple services. Not everyone on the nbn has an nbn box. Techefy is using iiNet VDSL2.

  • If u try to schedule the technician more than 30 days out, then u can always contact tpg to amend the cancellation date. Usually the notification period required is the minimum, so uve already given 30 days but if u call them now and ask them to amend the date to, say, 40 days because that's when the technician is coming out then that would better align.

Beware though that things can go wrong. Could be worth having a day overlap in case the tech comes out and encounters problems that can't be resolved that day. (in which case ud need to call tpg and ask for another extension… But ud need to give them a reasonable notice)

    • Thanks, that’s a great advice.

  • Can you lower your plan mid month?

Drop to the lowest/cheapest option the moment the new service goes live, if there is still a few weeks left this could save a bit more.

Meanwhile, my recent experience changing NBN providers said I needed to call my previous provider to cancel… except less than five minutes after signing up and the transfer process commencing I get an email saying "We are sorry to see you go"… nice.

As both technologies (NBN FTTN and iiNet FTTB) uses your one telephone (copper) line into your home, there is more work involved for the technician and both cannot be active at the same time.

Also, iiNet needs to send their modem/router to you. The modem/router was sent the next day and took 2-3 days.
I ordered on the 30th October and technician came in the 4th November.
For me, I have NBN FTTP; so both can be active at the same time, overlap was a few days.

    Text from iiNet:
Appointment requirements: You or someone over the age of 18 must be present.

The visiting technician will need access to your premises to complete the required work. During your appointment, please plug in your iiNet modem as shown in this setup guide. Note: If you don't receive your modem before the appointment date, testing will be completed on the technician's modem.

Important: If you live in an apartment complex or another multi-dwelling building, the visiting technician may need access to the Main Distribution Frame (MDF). Please make arrangements with your building or strata management to ensure the MDF is unlocked during your appointment.

The installer will contact you directly to make arrangements. If you won't be able to attend (or collect your iiNet modem from the post office before your appointment) please advise the installer to reschedule.

Following your appointment, we'll send another email to confirm when your FTTB service is active and ready to use

    • Thanks, I forgot to mention I’m going from an NBN connection to a VDSL2 connection. This is a surprising deal where every package is 40$ per month.

Oh looks like i need to arrange with the strata manager for the access to the communication equipmets.

      • I think your current NBN connection is FTTN.
So, still using telephone line into your home.

With VDSL/G.Fast the technician will bring a new G.Fast modem/NTU like this:
        https://help.iinet.net.au/set-ultra-broadband-fttb
        That NTU needs power

Yes saw the recent special after I got connected.
Mine was $20 off for 12 months.
Now, $50 off for 6 months.
