  • Seems legit! Just got the 598 a few weeks ago .. going to contemplate these too. Not the cheapest it's been on the .fr site but on amazon.com it's never been lower than $326US (before shipping). So a great price and find.

Camelcamelcamel shows the lowest price on amazon.fr to be EUR 236. These are EUR 229 (incl shipping). Unless there was also some kind of wierd discount when it was EUR 236, I think we can safely say these are the cheapest they have been on Amazon.fr!

      • +2

dont forget you would need to take the VAT from the 236 that they were at their lowest

  • will these run ok on a Onkyo TX-SR608 Receiver? Or will i still need an amp of some type to power these properly?

    • +2

Generally you will need an actual headphone amplifier to get the most out of the 650s.

I'm not sure if a receiver will do the job but a few forum postings suggest the negative:

      http://www.avsforum.com/t/1062347/sennheiser-hd650-headphone…

Try investing in the O2 (and the ODAC, if you need a DAC) - it will drive these cans reasonably well though not to their full potential.

      • In all likelihood, the receiver will be fine; the input impedance on the 650 is 300ohms, so the receiver output impedance can be up to 40ohms before you run into dampening "issues". Keeping in mind those "issues" are actually a desirable attribute by some (the tube amp crowd). The Onkyo will likely be well below that.

If you decide to amp (probably not necessary) The Objective2 will be plenty for those headphones, definitely amping to their full potential unless you enjoy permanently damaging your ears. More important to make sure you're using a halfway decent DAC (which will be part of the receiver).

So use the headphones, if you like the sound, great! No amp required! If they don't get loud enough; check out the Objective2. If you don't like the sound, check out some other headphone models (bringing your 650s along to compare).

Good thing about the 650s is that they hold their value extremely well. People are re-selling their old pairs and getting over 75% of their money back.

    • Most certainly possible. Sennheiser cans are usually quite sensitive and if you find the volume doesnt go up quite high enough, you can wire it to the stereo speaker out. I have ran the, out of the asus xonar essence stx at normal gain and I only set it at 70%. Needless to say, that is not much wattage at all.

    • +1

Jeff Atwood says a $30 soundcard (Asus Xonar DG) has an excellent audiophile level headphone amp:

      http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/05/who-needs-a-sound-c…

  • Why do these headphones have a cable to both sides when the lower-end Sennheisers have them on one side?

    • +2

It's easier for you to change the wires.

    • +1

So you can upgrade or replace them with ease. Some audiophiles purchase special 'better' cables to go with these headphones.

Ended up being $229.18 euro which translated to $296.58 AUD using the amazon currency converter. (for others considering this purchase, maybe don't select the amazon converter lol)

    • Pay in Euros and use the 28 degrees mastercard and you should get a better rate =)

  • Great price. I would buy if I didn't already have the HD600.

  • Good Price, but already bought ATH-M50 and HD25 this year thanks to OzBargain :)

And another issue is the open-air part.

    • +2

Congrats on the M50s and HD25s - both excellent headphones.

However, the 650s are in a completely different league to them - headphone users (I hesitate to keep using the term 'audiophiles') around the world rave about these for a reason - they sound more transparent, detailed and clear than most other headphones out there - and I think I can safely say these will be one of your best purchases at this price.

Open cans do have the disadvantage of poor isolation and sound leakage. However, open headphones will usually offer better soundstage and produce a more natural sound than closed cans.

All up to your circumstances I suppose

Its a huge step up from the HD-25..

HD-25 I find to be not all that good value for $150'ish. Its okay, but nothing special.

HD-650 is into serious quality territory. In some ways I prefer the HD-650s over the $1500 HD-800s.

        • +2

I agree. The HD 650 have a much warmer tone. A better all rounder. I had the 800s for a while cause I listen to a lot of classical but settled on the LCD-2.

For this price, it's a steal. I nearly bought one at $400 and I thought that was a steal. There are lots of fakes and rebadged 600s out there so be careful.

        • Good price but I found the sound on these a little dark and veiled. :) Consider the AKG701 as well. Those are similarly priced and have a more transparent sound IMHO.

I've owned these two and also the HD800. Which is a keeper.

Having said that, I bought these again to give it a spin for fun.

        • I have the Q701s right now - and have loved them for many months - when these 650s arrive I'm looking forward to giving them a thorough test and comparison

  • Got them in EUR. $285 in AUD with 28 Degrees.
Now what am I going to do with my Sennheiser HD-25 lol.

  • um… how do i change it to english?

  • i ordered the 598 from amazon uk, havent received them. how do they compair to each other? certainly, 650 is supposed to be bettern than 598. but by how much? i read the review of 598, it seems 598 is what i want. dont have time to do more research about 650 now. anyone can give me a short comparison?

  • bought one. this is bad, the whole buying process was conducted in french and i managed to get through them without second guessing…. amazon keeps stealing my money…

Are these the best headphones in the world?

Does anyone know if we still get the warranty here? Would we able to post to locally if any problems or back to Europe?

    • Amazon.com says the following about them:

'The HD 650 is covered by a 2-year international warranty'

  • could you recommend a matching amp for this baby?

    • perferable spl auditor

    • I'm using the Burson HA-160D amp with these. This amp does really well with Sennheisers and LCD-2s.

      • FYI the Auditor and Burson cost at least triple the price of these cans. Lol. Add a DAC and your $289 deal will cost way more. Sorry for your wallet.

        • headroom desktop dac/amp on sale 699 would be more reasonalbe invest,woo..drive,drive

        • These cans were higher value when I bought them so why buy a cheap amp to go with expensive cans? It's an investment so I can enjoy my music. :)

    • I use Corda Move and 3Move.. no longer made but you can pick them up 2nd hand about $150 usually.

    • +1

I'm planning to use them with the Schiit Asgard ($250 new) - I've read that they run them quite well. Of course, you'll also need to put aside another $250 for the DAC if you're going to use them out of a laptop

    • Objective2 Amp + Objective DAC
      http://www.jdslabs.com/item.php?fetchitem=48

Price/Performance ratio is out of this world.

    • M-stage matrix v1 or v2. Basically the same thing as a Lehmann black cube sans the $1000 dollar price tag as it is a 1:1 duplicate. Can be had for $250 built with minimal searching on eBay. I had both the lehmann and the m-stage v1 (in identical housing to the lehmann) and in the dark, I honestly cannot tell one apart from the other. I ran the HD650, HD800, K701, LCD-2, a few toy range (~$200) Denons and ATs and was satisfied with it.

The sonic signature is not my cup of tea, hence "had" it but that is a preference thing. Objectively, it powered the HD650s well and effortlessly, without distortion. However, it is an amp you will find quite limited if you have higher power demands (it will not power Hifiman HE6 too well).

Either way, all amps can be upgraded. I have my eyes set on some RS darkstar. Waiting for an ozbargain on that.

  • You find a manual in French below (see Product Details). Note that the original configuration settings may be different from those commonly used in France (eg, language settings, time, and currency). Manufacturer's warranty of this product may be different from that usually provided with products sold in France.

I bought a pair about 1.5 years ago, they're excellent. Bear in mind that these are open headphones meaning you will hear outside noise and people can hear what you are listening to.

At that price it's a steal!

Very much recommended as these were the top headphones of Sennheiser prior to the HD800 coming out.

Best experience if you do use a dedicated headphone amp with these.

  • +2

You will hear a lot of details with these headphones, so a bad recording will sound absolutely crap. Get at least 320kbps mp3s if you are listening with high-end headphones.

  • -2

Can someone clarify for me is it an open or close headphone? Thanks.

    • Read comment two above yours….

      • I built one last week as my first DIY project ever, wasn't very hard and only took about 6 hours to finish taking it nice and slow checking everything. You should give it a try, there is heaps of info about it.

        • whilst i can follow instructions okay i'm not very good with a soldering iron :(
