  • Ubiquiti Dream Machine Special Edition + U6+

    How about a UCG Ultra for around $179 and 2 x U6+ ?

    • depends how many access point you need, and I think if UCG Ultra + U6+, you will need poe injector

      • This is my setup… and I think it’s better and more flexible as I can get good coverage

  • Thanks OP. Bought Dream Machine SE as well, decent price.

  • Good deal on the UDM SE and a good choice if you want to integrate cameras etc.

  • +4

    U6+ = Good
    U6LR = Meh…

(genuine advice from a victim of U6LR)

    • Have got u6 lites currently. Think I'm going to keep waiting, but is tempting.

      • I’d say just go U7 when you really need to upgrade. If need extension, just add another U6Lite to cover dark spot.

    • They aren’t that bad. I’m running 2 currently… they go ok. Why aren’t you a fan?

      • Also running U6 Lites… what the primary reason to switch?

      • I never get 160MHz working properly on my U6LR. Others say it’s the MediaTek chipset to blame. Also I personally experience a “dark spot under the light” issue with my U6LR - it’s signal, especially 5GHz, sucks when I’m in the same room with unblocked line of sight, but 5GHz attenuates fast over walls anyway, ended up with an AP excels at 2.4GHz. Eventually my devices start to either connect to 5GHz on other nearby APs, or sometimes jump to 2.4GHz altogether. But if I’m looking for a coverage-centric AP for 2.4GHz, I can use UAP-LR instead.

The situation did get better after quite a few firmware updates, though. It’s relatively stable now. Performance is still an issue. Based on my use case, I should have waited for a month or two more for the U6Pro instead, which is actually a bit cheaper as well. (Yeah… U6Pro wasn’t generally available in Australia when I setup my network)

U6+ is cheap enough to endure the quirkiness of its MediaTek chipset, while U6Pro is fast with Qualcomm chip and good compatibility and performance. U6LR is the mascot squeezed in between that shouldn’t be considered unless with a very specific need.

  • If I buy one of these for upstairs wifi and one for downstairs wifi, what do I also need to buy to plug into the nbn box to make it all work?

    • a switch with poe which can power access point

      • Thanks, but other than powering the access points dont I need some kind of router to connect to the nbn box?

  • Thanks heaps OP. Been waiting for a DM SE to come on sale again!

  • What's the difference between the ultra and the max? Trying to decide which one I need. Currently have 1gbs fttp. Wired up two u6+ to a switch. Just need the router now.

    • +1

One of the major differences is the nvme slot in the side on the Max, allowing onboard storage for Protect (cameras). It also has 2.5G LAN ports, if that’s important to you.

      • +1

Not sure whether he was asking for Dream Machine Pro Max or Cloud Gateway Max. If he was asking about Dream Machine Pro Max vs SE, then the differences are:

        • UDM-Pro-Max: Up to 150 access points/extenders (vs 70 on SE)
        • Up to 25 full HD, 15x2K, 10x4K Unifi Protect cameras (vs 20, 12, 7 on SE)
        • 2x3.5 inch SATA drive bays (vs 1 on SE)
        • No PoE on ports (whereas SE does have PoE ports)
        • Apologies, this is in regards to the cloud gateways
