Upsized discount 6.5% off Gift cards for JB Hi-Fi (Previously 5%) @ Reward Gateway

Here are some of the most common questions that tend to pop up on Reward Gateway deals (and many thanks to WookieMonster and Chazzozz):

What is Reward Gateway?
Reward Gateway is an employee program that gives you access to discounted eGift cards and cashback across a large range of retailers.

Can I sign up to Reward Gateway if my employer doesn't participate or I'm self-employed?
Yes, API Lifestyle & Leisure offer casual memberships for $9.75 per month, and is available to anyone. However, if you choose to sign up for API Lifestyle & Leisure, please note access may not be granted instantly.

How do I access Reward Gateway?
Your employer needs to be subscribed to this program before you can apply to access the program. Once you are given access, you can log into Reward Gateway through the dedicated website for your company, or The SmartSpending app on Apple iOS and Android devices.

What is the transaction fee?
Transaction fees will vary depending on the type of card used to complete the transaction. Recent feedback given by their support team is as follows:

  • Mastercard or Visa debit card: 0%
  • Standard Mastercard or Visa credit card: 0%
  • Premium / Platinum Mastercard or Visa credit card: 0.5%
  • Standard AMEX card: 1.5%
  • Premium AMEX card: 3%

Having said that, Reward Gateway has in the past charged a 0% surcharge for some premium / platinum credit cards (e.g. Westpac Altitude Platinum, Citi Prestige, CommBank Platinum Awards).

Can I use prepaid gift cards (e.g. Vanilla Visa gift cards) as a payment method?
Reward Gateway officially requires all debit, credit and prepaid cards being used on their platform to support 3-D Secure. Prepaid gift cards do not support 3-D Secure, so they are likely to be blocked by the payment processor.

However, if you use a prepaid gift card via Apple Pay on the SmartSpending iOS app, it should bypass any 3-D Secure checks.

Are there any issues having a VPN active whilst using the SmartSpending app?
There have been reports where the 3-D Secure challenge on the SmartSpending iOS app will get stuck if a VPN is active. The workaround is to disable the VPN whilst making any purchases.

What denominations of eGift cards are available through Reward Gateway?
The gift card in this deal allows you to choose any whole dollar amount between $10 and $5000 inclusive. However, purchases of over $1000 are likely be split across multiple gift cards.

How are the eGift cards delivered?
Electronically. Either print them from your account or use the SmartSpending app to display them on a mobile device. There is also a unique PIN associated with each one which you will need to input when redeeming a card.

Is there a limit on the number of eGift cards I can buy?
Rewards Gateway will allow you to purchase up to the maximum amount (i.e. $5000) on your first transaction each day, but as fraud protection on your account, the system will limit further transactions to only $300 for that day.

I remember in the past Reward Gateway used to offer 10% off JB during specials. An extra 1.5% is really lame, especially 10% reward credits are common from Colesworth.

  • Is there still a cap on how many GCs you can use for online purchases? There's no limit for in-store, but it's courtesy to wait until it's not too busy before rocking up with a couple dozen to use. It's quite time-consuming for staff to enter that many into the POS terminal. (There used to be a photo floating around showing a couple of JB staff members stretching out a receipt that was several metres long after an enterprising OzB member presented 2 or 3 dozen GCs for a very large purchase.)

Someone recently said they redeemed 51 JB Hi-Fi gift cards in one online transaction.

Regarding the photo of the really long receipt, was it the one in this comment? That person redeemed 81 TCN gift cards in one in-store transaction.

Aha! Thanks for that, I shall try to remember to bookmark that one.

As for the mile-long receipt, yes, that's the one. Top effort by that OzBargainer!

  • If you don't have membership, what's the next best option for JB gift cards?

    • +1

Usually the gift cards from Woolies or Coles are the next best option, but they depend on you doing a whip 'round to all your local stores in order to buy enough denominations to cover the purchase. You then have the option of presenting them all at the store in person or converting to a digital JB card (a description of which WookieMonster kindly liked above).

Alternatively, ask someone who's already a RG member if they'll buy it for you. I've done that for a couple of different folks here for various retailers. That requires a bit of trust on the part of both parties: either you supply payment details with them by giving out your CC numbers or they pay for it upfront and you reimburse via another method. Either way, open a dialogue and discuss it - even if they say they can't help you're no worse off than if you don't ask in the first place.

      • Thanks @Chazzozz.
