Frugal Usenet Access - US$32 / A$50 Per Year (4 Servers Worldwide Including Australia)

220

Hi All-
Just announced with our BF sale this year is the debut of two new server locations. One on the West Coast of the USA but even better, a new Australian Usenet server which I believe is the first commercial service to do this. Both should give decent speeds to users in AU. A couple of AU ISPs have already altered their routing to this server for better performance so there is definitely interest from users and ISPs alike.

The details:

1 year of Frugal Usenet access for $32USD per year

  • Access to all 4 of our server locations around the world
  • Our independent backbone, bonus backup server (UsenetFarm) access with 1.5 TBs per calendar month; 3,000 +/- days retention. This server is truly independent of the main servers. Do not get caught up with other packages who may bundle and stealthily sell you the same access twice.
  • 100 (200 on AU server) connections on the main servers / another 50 on the bonus server (not that you need them all but there if so)
  • Many payment options including direct peer 2 peer crypto payments that flow directly from your wallet to ours with no middle man processors / governments taking part in your purchase
  • Rebills at the same price each year, providing a predictable low price for years to come with a lower cost than bait and switch introductory deals

Hope to see many of you sign up and as time goes on please email us with your experience for how things go with the AU / West Coast server.

Happy Usenetting!

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2024

If I’m an existing customer, and don’t have a renewal until late January - is there anyway I can sign up to the $32 plan but keep the 2.5 months I’ve paid for this year?

    • +2

sure but please email support for appropriate steps

    • +1

I had just autopaid a month, had both a monthly & yearly.

I emailed support and they turned off auto renew for the old monthly, and set my newly paid year to start when it will conclude.

      So I got my 12 + 1 after a quick email.

  • +2

    USD or AUD?

    • Sorry, USD

  • +2

    Assume this is in USD?

    • Yes, USD

  • +3

Assume its USD… does not showing savings/usual price

  • I already have a subscription until June 2025. If I buy this will it waste those six months or will it add on top?

    • Please email support for steps on how to do this for your account.

  • Very fast. I almost max my GBE connection

    • from AU server?

      • -1

whatttt there is AU now? lol

        • Username checks out.

  • -1

What is the use for this?

    • +7

      Linux isos

      • +2

So $32USD a year for an ISO?

        • +7

You can't imagine the number of ISOs Bigfella downloads.

        • +1

          RIP your drives sonny boy

  • Current user, great service and I think i'm on 33usd/yr so not going to bother for $1/yr difference.. Can i get some details on the AU server please?

    • +3

existing users can login to the website and view the newsreader set up guide for all 4 server addresses but the two new servers are:

      • aunews.frugalusenet.com
      • newswest.frugalusenet.com (US West Coast)
  • Epic!!

  • What backbone is this on?

  • +1

Just subscibed. Awesome speed increase over previous provider.
    Using:
    aunews.frugalusenet.com
    newswest.frugalusenet.com (US West Coast)

and the backup eu server as backup 2

    • glad to hear it and welcome! thanks for signing up

  • Hmmmm, very tempted, especially as Newsgroup Ninja have just increased their annual plan price from $30USD to $54USD.

Only thing that holds me back is that it just auto renewed until Nov next year. Not sure they will refund to be honest.

@swintec - Assuming you don't sign up to this deal in the next few days, what will the price revert to?

I really want to sign up but looking at my current providers terms, the payment I made a couple of weeks ago will see my service continue until 18 Nov 25 if I cancel now.

I am wondering whether I hold off until next Oct / Nov in the hope you run another deal like this.

Otherwise I'm paying for a years service twice and that is just not OzB….in fact my account may get suspended.

      • Normal price is $60 per year right now. Usually always a sale floating around though not for this low of a price though. Sorry ya got locked in elsewhere.

    • Just contact support and request for them to honour the lifetime price @USD30.

I decided to bail and head to Thunder based on the deal that johnnytran mentioned.

        • Oh that's a good deal. Will have to check it out; curious as it's on a different backbone.

  • How many connections do others usually use?

  • Brendan from Host Universal can fix your peering :)

  • If anyone has ever been with thunder, check your emails, they're offering a $30/year promo which drops $5 each year until $15/year. I'm on a lifetime $20 with usenetserver otherwise would have jumped on this.

Check your routing to aunews.frugalusenet.com before buying this, if you want an AU based service.

From iiNet their route goes over to the US then back to Sydney.

    • excuse my ignorance but how do you check the routing?

      • If you're using Linux there's a tool called "mtr" which is great. On Windows you'll probably have to use "tracert".

    • Same for Launtel

      • I just checked with Launtel (Melbourne) and I dont see any US hops. My traffic goes MEL >> SYD >> AUS FRUGAL SERVER (SYD).

        Link

    • +1

Same for Superloop (via Singapore) and Future (Via the US)

Solved by redirecting it through my Sydney VPS - thanks Host Universal :)

(still thinking of signing up just to support Frugal setting up in our neck of the woods)

    • on reddit they're good with refunds if you're not happy I believe - just contact them via PM

what ISP are you with and what kind of speeds are you getting?

    • sure, email support please and include what you are seeing for speeds and what not.

    • Are you using the AU server? It should max out a gigabit connection easily.

The fact this is the first commercial service to offer a local server has been lost by many, it's the most significant development relating to Usenet for Australia.

Only +20 votes, perhaps Black Friday has drowned out the deal.

      • It’s because not many people are into Linux. 🙂

      • +3

I agree! FYI….while things continue to shake out in the days and weeks ahead, a quick and easy thing we can do on our end is offer 200 connections instead of 100 on the AU server, for those that need / want that. This change is live.

        • Thank you.

        • Thank you for this. How does one go about getting the 200 connections as I too am getting very low speeds on the AU server.

Edit: Please ignore. Just read that the change is live.

      • Hey I’m on Leaptel on a gigabit plan and it should be going directly from Perth to Sydney (checked through their lookingglass)

However I’m only getting 5MB/s, any idea why that might be? Sorry I’m new to Usenet

Edit: Fixed it! Had to set my connections in SABnzbd to 200. Leaving the comment in case anyone else has the same issue

        • How many connections have you set now ?

    • +1

Apologises. This is being caused by drive write speeds (either becuase SMB or Docker volume). Not the provider. AU server is doing 1gbs. I've removed my above comment.

      • No worries. There are a lot of moving parts to downloading at such high speeds and even a slight problem somewhere in the process can derail the rest of things.

Frugal's sister site blocknews also has Australian servers now too for those that prefer Blocks and/or want to try the Australian server and/or don't need the farm: https://billing.blocknews.net/signup/blockfriday

@swintec - will the blocknews connections be bumped to 200 for the .au server as well?

      • +1

        RIP news.internode.on.net

    • +2

yes, blocknews as well for 200
