Eero 6+ Setup Help

Hey everyone, just got a Eero 6+ Mesh system from Amazon and wanted to ask quick question for those who can answer it

My house is networked with Ethernet connections in all rooms etc

The setup says one of the Eero connects to my Modem and the other 2 I place around the house connected to Ethernet ports for better connection

What I want to know tho, do I have to connect it straight to my modem? Since my modem connects to a Netgear Switch that feeds the rest of the house, can I just connect them anywhere seeing all connections lead back to the modem?

Or does it have to be connect straight to the modem itself into one of its Ethernet inputs?

Thanks

  • I've been wanting the Eero plus myself but haven't because of life's expenses , I thought the Eero system was that one unit would become the modem and others connected via cable or wireless.
You should have contact details for Eero , so message them to find your answer .
I have fibre to the property.

    • Nah the system I got which is the Eero 6+ connects to the NBN modem and the other two around the house.

Just trying to find out if I have to connect it to the modem itself since my house is Ethernet cabled

      • nbn NTD box —- eero 6+ router —- NetGear switch —- eero 6+ —- eero 6+.

    • The eero 6+ is a router that plugs into the nbn fibre NTD box. You don't need a VDSL2 modem like nbn FTTN does.

—- is an ethernet cable. ))) is a wireless signal.

Setup option 1. nbn NTD box —- eero 6+ router —- eero 6+.

Setup option 2. nbn NTD box —- eero 6+ router ))) eero 6+.

  • It says that all 3 of my Eeros can be connected to the modem, doesn’t matter which one but your saying at least one has to connect directly to the modem and not a switch which is also connected to the modem

I have FTTN so I use a Modem/Router and not a NBN box

I’m use a older Telstra modem with ABB NBN 100/20

    • Yeah plugin one of the eero to your Telstra VDSL2 modem LAN port. Configure the Telstra VDSL2 modem in bridge mode, look for an option called 'kick the connection' after logging into the MyAussie portal on the Aussie BB site and setup the eero.

      Telstra VDSL2 modem —- eero6 6+ router —- NetGear Switch —- eero 6+ —- eero 6+.

Get FTTP if you are eligible. This way you can get rid of the Telstra modem. nbn FTTN/FTTC to FTTP checker.

      • Yer I’m trying to

May I ask a quick question tho. What is the difference between me connecting the Eero straight to the Telstra modem or connecting it to a switch that’s in the lounge room since that switch connects to the Telstra modem via Ethernet

Just so I know as I can’t really see a difference apart from not being a straight connection which to me wouldn’t make a difference?

Yer Telstra modem has all wifi turned off it just connected to a switch now that feeds the house

  • Ok this has me intrigued for some time. I’ve seen many posts of people with Ethernet ports (seemingly enough) but still are buying mesh access points.

    Genuine question… why?

Why not just a straight wifi access point?

Why does it need to be configured as a mesh system? My understanding of mesh systems are for homes without Ethernet points and the mesh access points talk to one another…

    • I was told that even tho Mesh systems are mainly designed for wireless connection, if you have Ethernet ports through it out the house and your mesh system can accept them then it’s best to use them for a even better connection. Lucky the Eero has 2 Ethernet inputs on each device so I can connected it via Ethernet and use the other Ethernet port to connect something else if needed.

I just wanted better wifi in my house for IPhones IPads and switch since I’m still using a access point that it’s wireless N hahaha

      • Surely not more reliable than hard wired connections?

        • Yer but somethings like I mentioned above don’t use cables anymore

          iPads
          iPhones
          MacBooks
          Switch Lite
          Etc

So I’m gonna use it for those things and everything that can be cabled will be like Playstation Xbox etc

          • @Twisty: But is data hopping from mesh node to mesh node wirelessly back to the router or via the Ethernet cable, in which case makes the mesh redundant? They basically become access points.

Do you have gigabit Ethernet throughout the home? Surely that would be a faster method of transfer than wifi back to the router.

If that’s the case, just buy normal access points?

            Or am I missing something?

            • @joka: Maybe someone else can chime in as I have no idea

              • @Twisty: Yes please!

Does anyone know the answer to this?

                Genuinely intrigued…
