Access Point Setup Recommendations Please

Hi All, I looking for suggestions on what gear to get to setup my new home with Access Points (i'm guessing I need those due to concrete/brick construction as opposed to a mesh setup - yes???)

I'm moving soon from north west NSW where I'm on 4G wireless to my new place that has FTTP. According to the various ISP's I can get a 1000/50 connection. The garage is the only thing downstairs and it has the FTTP box. Up 1 floor to the main living area there's a 5 point data outlet in the linen closet as well as a data point in the front room and another in the back room. Finally upstairs there's 2 more data points, 1 in study another in the main bedroom.

While I'm thinking of getting a 250/25 connection initially, I would like to install a NAS in the study and am wondering if this impacts what kind of access points I get to enable fast data/backhaul speeds?!? Have I got that right??? :)

Appreciate any help/info/wisdom :)

Thanks

  • Have the nas in the garage. Install a network cabinet for your router, nas and switches. Maybe even a nvr for cctv etc..

    • Thanks. Any suggestions on the make/model of the various pieces?

Your main constraint will be your upload speed when accessing externally.
You local network will most likely have 1000 speeds via ethernet for all wired devices.

While I'm thinking of getting a 250/25 connection initially,

These plans will be switching to 700/50 end of next year.

Access Points are just providing Wi-Fi without the routing capability, assuming you already have a working router. Most wireless mesh system can run in both router or access point mode, and is definitely suitable in your situation. Just get a mesh router and use ethernet backhaul to link everything together.

  • if you would like to test a cheap WiFi 7 router : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/878177

Try to use at least 2.5GbE with NAS, even that would be saturated
You can get keeplink 2.5GbE 8 port switches for around $70 from AliExpress if needed, check previous deals.
2.5GbE PCIe cards are around $15 at Ali as well.

You can have APs at each floor if needed, connect with Ethernet backhaul to the router.
