Router Recommendation for nbn FTTC/FTTP

Hello OzBargain!

I'm in need of a new router because my current router is dead (according to ISP tech support). There was nbn outage yesterday and after multiple calls with tech support, they finally said my router is the problem. I'll try my neighbor's spare router tonight to make sure that my router is actually faulty before buying a new router.

Now I need help with recommendations for my new router. I'm not really familiar with the latest router technology.

My scenario:

  • Currently living in a 310m2 single story rental.
  • I'm currently renting so stuck with FTTC. But I may move to my own place within the next year and I'll upgrade that place to FTTP.
  • Our household has 3 phones, 2 work laptops, Chromecast connected to 4k TV (and potentially a robot vacuum soon).
  • Will be buying security cameras when I move to my own place.

I think I need a mesh wifi system with 2.4G and 5G channels.
I'm not sure if I need wifi 6 or 6E or 7. Also not sure if I need dual band or tri-band.
All I know is mesh wifi acts as a blanket across the house and there is one master router and multiple slave satellites which will ensure proper coverage across the house using something called a Back-haul. That's all I know. Please help me with a good router with potential to upgrade later to suit FTTP

  • Any router with a WAN port is compatible with nbn FTTC and FTTP.

How much do you want to spend?
What speed tier would you get if you had FTTP?

    • Good to know that any router with WAN port can work with both FTTC and FTTP.

Could you please suggest what is a good budget for a reliable router or mesh system? I'm thinking $300-400 is good enough. Or is it too low or too high?
I'm leaning towards 1000/50 plan when I switch to FTTP.

I have an RT-AX86U and it covers my two story townhouse without issue.

Replacing it with Ubiquiti gear but it’s been awesome. Highly recommend.

Decide where you want the FTTP box to be and wire it up so it can be connected to the optic fibre from the NBN setup. Call a cabler and get it done before you move in. Set up ethernet ports with cat 6/6e in each room and to each potential camera location, purchase poe cameras like reolink. Use a mesh system like tp-link deco which supports wifi 5 and 6 and plug that into the room's ethernet port for a proper gigabit experience.

  • I am in the process of upgrading my NBN to FTTP from FTTN, and I've just bought the Netgear Orbi RBK852 Mesh Wifi router 2-pack. It's a WiFi 6 system, and not the cheapest, but one of the best rated on tech sites. It's a tri-band system with dedicated wireless backhaul.

  • Connect your PC to the NBN NTD to make sure it really is your router. 2nd hand Telstra Smart Modems are quite decent and reasonably priced and a lot of additional functionality can be unlocked when they are rooted. There are also compatible boosters available for them to set up a Mesh system. Back haul is the link the connects the satellites with the master. Most people buy mesh systems because they don't have the wiring for multiple APs and wanted to use the wireless connection to distribute WiFi to the satellites but wired back haul is superior. Your next place might already be suitably wired for Ethernet which will give you additional options besides a mesh set up, If you're buying a mesh system now and want to cover your bases ensure the satellites can also use wired back haul.
