USB Hub for MacBook Air for Multiple Display

Hey,

I want to have connect to dual 1080P monitors with HDMI to my MacBook Air M3. I could purchase 2 new DP QHD monitors if really required (but rather use existing monitors with HDMI).

Is there a USB C hub (doesn't have to be portable) that I can connect 2 HDMI monitors, mouse, keyboard, to that is compatible with the MacBook Air M3?

I heard some USB C hubs won't work with the MacBook Air M3 for whatever reason.

So would be great if you can recommend one that you know works.

Thanks

Unless you're going to use a DisplayLink based hub, MBA only supports 1 external monitor (w screen open) or two w screen shut [source https://support.apple.com/en-us/117373]

If you use a DL-based hub, it introduces a latency (as it essentially emulates a video card) and while that's fine for office work/internet browsing, it's no good for games.

    • Thanks, it’s just for office.

I suppose I could disconnect one monitor if for gaming (but never have played games before.)

The DL hub is pretty pricey but I’ve never run dual monitors off a laptop before.

    • I tested it with a Dell DisplayLink hub with 1 external HDMI monitor and the monitor didn't work, the keyboard and mouse worked fine.

I know the Dell DisplayLink hub (monitor, mouse, KB) works with a Windows laptop, but unsure why did doesn't with with the MBA (screen open or closed).

A nit frustrating when moving to X86/Windows to Mac

      • did you install displaylink drivers for mac os? not going to work without them

        • No, I didn't lol

          Thanks, will try again.

I assumed it was plug and play like windows or at least the OS would have notified me that I need a driver. Mac rookie error.

        • Installed the displaylink drivers for mac.

Rebooted MBA. The single external monitor worked as extended display. The mouse and KB didn't!

Rebooted MBA. The mouse and KB works. The external monitor doesn't work.

Rebooted a few more times, unfortunately external monitor never worked again (with MBA closed or not).

          Frustrating to say the least.

Will test our a cheap USB-C hub with just 1 monitor. I have one somewhere.

          • @JimB: sounds like a dodgy dock, I am sorry to say. I had a few lenovo ones dying consistently on me.

            • @smartialarts: Thanks, I will test with another DL Dock.

This Dell DL Dock works perfectly with my Dell and Toshiba laptops.

  • I think you will need a Thunderbolt dock to get native dual display with the lid closed. Something like the Dell WD22TB4.

If you're on more of a budget, you could look at a USB-C hub and a second USB-C to HDMI Cable.

    • Thanks.

These thunderbolt docks ever go on sale? Pretty pricey!
