What Camera Should I Buy for Video?

Hey guys! Got a camera question for you all.

I currently have a A7riii which I’ve loved for photography but really want to start delving into videography more for jobs etc. I don’t love the video aspects of the A7riii due to pixel binning etc.

I mostly shoot travel related stuff so lots of outdoor content (beaches, mountains, waterfalls in nature etc)

I do sell photography prints as well so the a7riii’s 42 megapixels is great for that.

My question is. I wanna videography camera, but to afford it I need to sell my current camera. what do you guys suggest?

I’ve been looking at the a7siii as I know it’s beast for video but is the 12mp too low for print photos?

I’d preferably would want a Sony camera as I have multiple Sony lenses. Any Sony camera suggestions would be great.

Cheers!

It's not pixel binning (that is what Canon does) … Sony CROP the image sensor down to the 4k resolution …

Why not use what you currently have until you work out what you actually need?
(yours will do 4k @ 30p with a crop - which essentially makes it look zoomed in)

Do you need 4k? Do you need 60p? do you need 10bit HDR?

I have a couple A7Siii's, while they are OK for video, they would not be considered a photo camera (there are better video cameras that take a full frame 6k sensor and resample to 4k - retaining far more detail that the A7Siii gives at native 4k only)

Any Sony camera suggestions would be great.

Believe it or not, but the Sony ZV-E1 has the same sensor as the A7Siii and better features at half the price ;) Although photos are still dodgy at 12MP - But you might be able to buy it outright and keep your A7Riii for photo …

The best all rounder Sony has is probably the A7IV … although it still has a crop at 4k @ 60p …

I do a heap of video using all sorts of cameras (have access to Panasonic S5ii, Panasonic GH7, Panasonic G9 ii, Canon R6 ii, Nikon Z6 iii and Sony A7Siii) - but the only ones with decent photo features out of that bunch are Panasonics and Nikons!

    • Nice measured response!

    • Appreciate all your answers and recs!

I have used my a7riii for a bunch of video jobs actually but just really hate the massive crop when shooting in 4K, and have heard the quality drops a bunch?

I really just want to save as much as I can to buy a really good video camera as I really want to delve further into editing/colour grading and everything videography.

Is there anything that doesn’t crop when shooting 4K?

      • Yeah, I absolutely despise video crops!! All the cameras I listed in the last sentence above do not have 4k @ 60p crops ;)

For Sony, the only non-crops are the A7Siii, ZV-E1 or FX3 (all based on the same 12MP full frame sensor) …

        • Okay sweet as well thanks for all the info! What about the a7iv? I’ve heard it’s a good hybrid for photo and video but would you know how the video is on this camera? I know it has 30mp which would be great for my photography prints but not sure what the video capabilities are like and if it crops or not?

          • @Daron2000: The A7IV is slightly better than the A7R iii in the fact it has no crop up to 4k @ 30p, but above that (like 4k @ 60p) it does crop ….

  • ZV-E1 photos worse as they removed mechnical shutter which is okay as long as you dont intend on shooting fast movement

ZV-E1 overheats will auto shutoff around 10-60mins continious recording depending on ambient temperatures and video settings can get fan that clips on back but i hear they noisy

autofocus and several other software features are much better on ZV-E1

12MP is fine for print unless your interested in going above A3 or intend to crop extensively

personally if you like spending time learning all the advanced features i'd go for a7siii otherwise ZV-E1 has a lot of vlogger style features is better entry point for beginners most the advance features are still there unless they require more proccessing power or bigger enclosure

also ZV-E1 is so much better value for money, ive seen these as low as $2250 with cashbacks vs a7siii $3800

a7IV good middle ground and take with grain of salt but rumor mill suggests a7v early next year but no signs of a7siv

    • Okay sweet as thanks for letting me know all the details!

To be honest the ZV-E1 sounds like something I’d probably get. I do print above A3 with A0 being the biggest print I sell so I might just keep my a7riii for photography and start saving for the ZV-E1.

Unless I should just save an extra $1k to get the a7siii? I’m so bad at deciding what to get 😂

  • There's no perfect solution. If you can stretch the budget, I would keep your A7riii and buy a Sony FX30. All current Sony hyrbids will overheat after 45min - 60min when shooting 4K outdoors. FX30 is basically the A6700 with a fan, and the FX3 is the A7Siii with a fan. This way you'll have a main cam that never overheats. If you get into shooting interview style videos you'll have two cameras. And you'll still have the high res A7riii for photos.

    • True! I wouldn’t actually be doing any long form videos anyway so not having an internal fan doesn’t bother me. I shoot a lot of brand/product focused content so I’m never really shooting for more than a minute per clip. Do you reckon the FX-30 is a better option than the ZV-E1?
