What's the problem with TB3 in this case? I don't think TB4 really introduces anything special wrt NVMe enclosures. Both of these are PCIe 3.0 40Gbps to my understanding.
You could be right, it’s TB5 that doubles the bandwidth
According to OWC:
Thunderbolt 3 can be used to consume and distribute bandwidth, allowing it to be used in both docking and storage solutions.
Thunderbolt 4 is rigidly designed to hub bandwidth. As a result, its primarily used in docks and hubs
USB4 isn’t a “tight” a protocol as the Thunderbolt variants, from memory, but more googling will give you a fuller answer.
@Orrelljet: Got it thanks. May as well order another one.. my WavLink USB3 is atrociously slow
How so you find the UGREEN one?
Been eyeing it for a few monthsFantastic, maxes out at 3755/3610 MB/s sustained read and write which sounds about right for the bandwidth. M4 max internal drive gets 6491/6572.
Even if this isn’t quite as good it’s about 70 bucks AUD, and not every drive performs well as the Firecuda 530 I have in it.
ahhh nice deal but ONLY thunderbolt or USB 4, does NOT support USB 3 backwards mode
Awesome thanks! Just what I need.
This is a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure without USB 3.2 gen 2 bridging chipset so you can only use it on Thunderbolt 3, 4, USB4 (and most likely Thunderbolt 5 will run it in Thunderbolt 3 mode).
A lot of Thunderbolt 4 enclosures use the same chipset, but with a bridging chipset to add support for USB 3.2 gen 2. Then, there is USB4 from ASMedia ASM2464PD. That chipset supports USB 3.2 gen 2, USB 3.2 gen 2x2, USB 4. ASM2464PD supports Thunderbolt 3 & 4, but does require the PC with Thunderbolt 4 to run a new enough Thunderbolt 4 firmware.
If you have an older PC or Intel Mac with only Thunderbolt 3, it can be risky to go for a USB4 enclosure. As such, you might want to consider this instead.
I was hoping you might weigh in with some actually factual info. Not disappointed:-)
I have an old computer which does not have USB-C or Thunderbolt. Can I buy this USB-A to USB-C cable (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/belkin-boostup-charge-usb…) and use it to connect this enclosure to my old laptop?
I re-checked the page for the enclosure (TBU405):
https://www.acasis.com/en-au/products/acasis-usb4-0-m-2-nvme…
It mentions Intel® JHL7440 Thunderbolt™ chip and the REALTEK® RTL9210B chip so it does have a USB 3.2 gen 2 bridging chip. However, if you were to use USB-A to USB-C cable, you are looking at USB 3.2 gen 1 speed, which is ~500MB/s. You are better off buying a cheaper USB-C enclosure unless you are certain you will be getting an Apple Silicon Mac or a new PC that supports Thunderbolt 3/4/5 or USB 4.
Thank you :)
@ganjadeals: Just got pointed out by hacker1024, TBU405 Air doesn't have the other chipset so it will not work in USB3 mode.
That is the TBU405, not the TBU405 Air. The Air does not support USB at all.
@hacker1024: Sorry, I need to get my eyes checked
The main reasons to get this enclosure are:
- You have PCs / laptops or Intel Macs which are Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 with old firmware (firmware upgrade must come from motherboard maker, even if it is an add in card).
- Experiencing SSD compatibility issues or ASMedia based enclosures (cheap ones) don't have sufficient heat dissipation.
- You need an Thunderbolt enclosure for travelling purposes and you want stronger compatibility with older devices.
Picked one up for my Mac. Thank you.
I got the UGreen one for $99 inc GST at AliExpress and it’s been great, could this one as good?
The UGreen is USB4/TB4 but this is only TB3.
Would suggest getting the UGreen for not much more
