$198.55 at Sydney tools for all you penny pinchers https://sydneytools.com.au/product/makita-duh507z-18v-liion-…

    • just missed out on $1.45 lol

  • Silly question - is the battery compatible with products of any other brand?

    • +2

Not a silly question. Not without adaptors and for most major tool brands while you can use adaptors they don't have the best results because they use different Battery Management Systems.

You can sometimes use these batteries on other more basic tools like cordless vacuums etc but do your own research for your own use case 👍

Looking to buy first hedge trimmer

    Deciding between
    1. this Makita one + battery + charger @ $199
Aware Makita makes trade-grade tools, but this looks like more home-use grade?
    or
    2. this Ryobi 50cm one, skin only $179 (I have lots of Ryobi 18v tools)
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-18v-one-50cm-hedge-trimmer…
    or
    3. Ozito 46cm one, skin only $89 (mostly for the price, but I have Ozito lawn mower, so don't mind Ozito)
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-pxc-18v-cordless-hedge-tri…

Lots of existing stuff I need to trim back, also looking to grow ~50m of photinia robusta or Lilly Pully.

Any recommendations or key things I need to watch out for?
    Thanks

We've got a larger EGO brushless trimmer…operates at 56v. Is the strongest hedge trimmer I've ever owned (from a range of cord powered electrics I've had over the years).

Also have a small set of Makita shears, with a tiny hedge trimmer attachment. Bought it purely for tidying up small things, but my wife uses it on some compact melaleuca (not challenging…green shoots) and it does ok.

I had $50 credit with Sydney Tools, and so I just ordered this to fit in between those two trimmers. My wife likes to use these things too, but finds it hard to handle the EGO and the little shears aren't suitable for much but light trimming and shaping. I don't really expect the Makita to get through what the EGO manages. The EGO is more than a kilo heavier than this skin, and the batteries even more - I do use it with a battery backpack wherever I'm going to be trimming more than a bush or two (though it does mess up the balance a bit).

Where a bush has been allowed to get a little too untidy I'll still be coming back to the EGO I think. We have a few tougher bushes that I'll probably continue to use the EGO for, but I'm sure the Makita should manage with a little more patience.

Sorry, wish I could speak from experience on the Makita, but those are my expectations. For what you've mentioned, probably much of a muchness. Maybe save the money and get the Ozito (if your mower batteries work on it)? With 50m of fairly robust hedge in your future you may be wishing you had something more powerful than any of those three options you mentioned. It may be less painful to upgrade (should you need to) if you haven't spent much to begin with?

I've never been too fussed on consumer Ryobi. I've had a poor experience with a couple of their products I purchased some years back, and I simply don't like that it's a Bunnings exclusive line here in Australia. That said, I have a couple of mains powered trade Ryobis that have lasted me decades of 'enthusiast' use. My Makita tools have always impressed, though this isn't a nice high end brushless skin as far as I can tell.

There is ozito one with 2.5ah battery+charger for $99, i got it and i’m happy with it. It’s not heavy to handle especially when trimming the top of lilly pilly on ladder.
I just clean it with wd40 garden cleaner after every use and apply canola oil before storing as suggested by the bunnings staff (so that it won’t rust).

  • cheaper than Ozito

  • Dang, just paid this at Bunnings for the skin without any of the bonuses. And my receipt just went through the wash.

Purchase this and return to Bunnings at their current price. They should check your ID and record against this but should be simple refund IMO.

Purchase would be on your flybuys or powerpass transactions, if you used one. Or you can get refund with credit card transaction history.

  • This is a good deal, I'm after the makita 750mm hedge trimmer as my hedge is quite thick and wide

  • Great deal. I’m in the market for one of the makita pole hedge trimmers - nothing similar I can see

    • Yeh me too. I was actually hopping for a pole saw/ pole hedge trimmer combo (interchangeable heads) but they don't seem to make it.

  • Give me my Makita back, Mac!

  • Looking for a Makita lawn mower, can't seem to find any deal
