$500 HDMI CABLE - Digital Cinema

I paid a visit to Digital Cinema recently looking to upgrade the home theatre. Was nice that they showed the breakdown cost of each component and installation cost as we were going. Knowledgeable about home theatres and surround sound (surprising how little some of these dealers know - please research before trusting these people).

Towards the end of the quote, the guy added a $500 HDMI cable and shitty $500 projector mount. Negotiated to reduce the total cost, but didn't really save much given this shit was over inflated 10x. The Black Friday deals are great, but pulling this shit at the end is disgusting. If anyone goes to Digital Cinema to install a home theatre, PLEASE be aware of this marketing strategy or some would say "scam".

Long time lurker to OzBargain. Tried to give those shitty products 1 star on their website … oh would you look at that my review needs to be moderated!!!! I was so pissed, I made this account and had to post this.
I don't have the balls to call them out directly. Call me stupid, but given how many ultra 8k 48GBPS !!! buzzwords there were, I started to believe that these cables were truly worth $500 LOL.

Side note: I've also noticed in Sydney that a lotta stores have poor 4G/5G/Public Wi-Fi connection. Ytf can I not compare prices for parts when I'm at the store. Seems suspicious.
WTF is audio dimension. someone gotta look into this.

  • Well… that was interesting.

  • Good cables make good sound.

This reminded me of an article I read long ago in the old magazine Electronics Australia. See here and go to page 20. Stay sensible people.

    • Before getting to page 20, there is a section called "What's New In Entertainment Electonics". Page 12 has "Digital audio and video cables" priced $129 to $159. According RBA's inflation calculator that's equivalent to $429.40 in 2023.

A $500 HDMI cable will give you some of the sharpest 1s and roundest 0s.

How much did you end up paying for it after negotiation?

Found this in the past with Hardly Normal.
Was buy a Blu-ray player for less than 3 pineapples and the salesperson tried the "but you'll need this cable for best performance".
The cable being promoted was half the cost of the player FFS.
A cable for about a tenner from Big W did the trick.

      • Funnily enough, I had a decent experience buying a receiver from HN. I bought a receiver on clearance and they threw in monster speaker cable and a display model iPod dock at no cost.

I generally hate Harvey Norman. I've heard stories of them ripping off friend's families. In my experience, the sales people are dishonest.

As an example, I bought a camera there years ago. During the sale, the sales person pressured me to take the Hardly Normal "Global Warranty" - valid in countries with Hardly Normals. They lied about purchasing directly from the manufacturer. When I said no, a few sales people starting pretending to freak out "OMG, I can't believe he said no." I regret completing that transaction.

  • That’s like Doors Plus wanting to charge $1,600 to supply and install an $80 internal door. Don’t know how these business are still even around.

      Doors Plus, no fuss.

    • +1

Maybe Doors Plus is Jim Morrison's estates trust fund?

  • I recently purchased some cables from The Reject Shop. They work well.

  • Was this a long hdmi cable that goes through the wall and ceiling?

    • For $500 it would want to run from the shop display directly to OPs house

  • If you want the best, you want negative latency, and that means time crystals, which don't come cheap.

    • Harvey Norman got to you too hey
